NASA scientist and RealClimate.org’s Gavin Schmidt declared in a February 17, 2011 posting: “There is no theory or result that indicates that climate change increases extremes in general.” See: NASA Scientist & RealClimate.org’s Gavin Schmidt: Global Warming Does Not Cause Extreme Weather Events
Schmidt includes all sorts of caveats, including the phrase “in general,” but Schmidt’s declaration may be misread by many as some sort of statement that proponents of man-made global warming do not claim that an increase in many types of extreme storms are “predicted” or “consistent” with their climate model based virtual world. [Note: The latest global warming debacle comes in the form of new studies attempting to link specific rain and flood events to man-made global warming. See: Prof Pielke Jr.: ‘Many will still want to connect the dots between greenhouse gas emissions and recent floods. Connecting the dots is fun, but it is not science’ & Astrophysicist Calls AGW Caused Flood Study ‘Drivel’ & NY Times not buying claims of AGW/flood paper: ‘The problem is that the Nature paper is not definitive at all’ ]
Physicist Dr. Lubos Motl commented on Schmidt’s new ambiguous extreme weather/AGW claim. “The idea that all extremes are getting stronger – a basic pillar of the climate doomsday beliefs – is actually so silly that even one of the most famous climate cranks, Gavin Schmidt, has been able to figure it out and admit that it’s wrong,” Motl wrote on February 18, 2011.
“The idea that climate extremes are supposed to get larger is one of the most omni-present manifestations of the climate doomsday religion,” Motl wrote. “This thesis contradicts pretty much all empirical data as well as theoretical analyses of the climate.
Motl called the link “complete pseudoscientific nonsense” and added: “There’s been no significant global trend in either of them during the last 100 years or so.”
Climate Depot wants to ensure that Gavin Schmidt’s latest proclamation is not misconstrued by some to believe that global warming activists are not attempting to link extreme storms to man-made global warming.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
First of all, Schmidt himself has promoted the idea of more extreme storms being linked to man-made climate change. See: Flashback August 2010: Gavin Schmidt predicted more extremes! ‘The unusual heat waves, the unusual rainfall events will not be unusual in 10, 20, 30, 40 years’ time’

If you ask me as a scientist whether I have proved it, the answer is no — at least not yet’ [Note: Schmidt has also run afoul of his colleagues for his past scientific work and claims. See: Climate Depot Exclusive: Real Climate Exposed! A Comprehensive Report on the ‘Real’ RealClimate.org: Atmospheric scientist Dr. Hendrik Tennekes, a prominent scientist from the Netherlands, wrote a scathing denunciation of Schmidt in which he said he was “appalled” by Schmidt’s “lack of knowledge” and added, “Back to graduate school, Gavin!”]
Now Schmidt is claiming: “There is no theory or result that indicates that climate change increases extremes in general.”
Many of Schmidt’s warmist friends at RealClimate.org and the global warming establishment have been overtly linking severe weather to man-made global warming for years. Those making the link between extreme weather and man-made global warming include the UN IPCC, Al Gore, NASA’s James Hansen, Joe Romm, Jeff Masters, John Holdren, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and many, many others who have been promoting “global climate disruption” or “global weirding.”
Below is a very small sample of organizations and warmists who have predicted an increase in extreme weather due to man-made global warming.
‘Hockey Stick’ Creator and Realclimate.org’s Michael Mann in a December 3, 2010 article, answered in the affirmative to the question of whether “extreme weather events [are] evidence of global warming?”
Mann claims “statistics tell us that shifts in climate have contributed to extreme weather.” “As the numbers start piling up, you can say that the numbers have been shifted by climate change. A 1,000-year event becomes a 30-year event,” Mann said.
“The heat in Russia and the floods in Pakistan in the past year were not just weather flukes,” Mann said. “Statistics show very much that these events really are part of bigger trends,” he added.
More Warmists linking extreme weather:
AP Article: August 13, 2010: ‘The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) pointed out that this summer’s events fit the international scientists’ projections of ‘more frequent and more intense extreme weather events due to global warming.’

Gore now claims ‘increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with… man-made global warming’ — But Gore never warned of looming ‘heavy snowfalls’ in his 2006 film — The man who ‘created’ the Internet finds his website (and his science) not up to the task — Climate Depot’s Rebuttal
Will they blame crop failures on witches next? ABC News: U.S. snow, floods in Australia and Brazil the product of global warming — Astrology Prof. Richard Somerville tosses away science: ‘This is no longer something that’s theory or conjecture…We’re observing the climate changing. It’s happening, it’s real.’]
Jeff Masters’ religious beliefs corrupt his science! ‘In my 30 years as a meteorologist, I’ve never seen global weather patterns as strange as those we had in 2010′ firstname.lastname@example.org — Masters goes unscientific: Masters: ‘The stunning extremes we witnessed gives me concern that our climate is showing the early signs of instability’ [Climate Depot Response to Masters: ‘The stunning anecdotal crap we are witnessing from your mouth gives us concern that you are showing early signs of renouncing any of your remaining scientific legitimacy’]
Flashback Aug. 2010: NYT: Theory suggests that a world warming up because of those gases will feature heavier rainstorms in summer, bigger snowstorms in winter, more intense droughts in at least some places and more record-breaking heat waves.
NASA’s James Hansen Links droughts and floods to man-made global warming in 2010: ‘Would these events have happened if atmospheric carbon dioxide had remained at its pre-industrial level of 280 parts per million?’ His answer is ‘almost certainly not’
‘Climate Astrology’ Takes Hold: Japanese scientist Kanya Kusano, a Program Director and Group Leader for the Earth Simulator at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science & Technology, has publicly declared that man-made climate fear promotion is now akin to “ancient astrology.”
Mathematical physicist Dr. Frank J. Tipler, Prof. of Mathematical Physics, astrophysics, at Tulane University: “Whether the ice caps melt, or expand — whatever happens — the AGW theorists claim it confirms their theory. A perfect example of a pseudo-science like astrology. It is obvious that anthropogenic global warming is not science at all.”
See: Watch Now: Climate Depot’s Morano on Fox News Mocking ‘Climate Astrology': ‘This is now akin to the predictions of Nostradamus or the Mayan calendar’ — Morano: ‘There is no way anyone can falsify the global warming theory now because any weather event that happens ‘proves’ their case…Man-made global warming has ceased to be a science, it is now the level of your daily horoscope’ — Gore [in 2006 film] did not warn us of extreme blizzards and record cold winters coming’
