Climategate: five Aussie MPs lead the way by resigning in disgust over carbon tax

Australia is leading the revolt against Al Gore’s great big AGW conspiracy – just as the Aussie geologist and AGW sceptic Professor Ian Plimer predicted it would.
ABC news reports that five frontbenchers from Australia’s opposition Liberal party have resigned their portfolios rather than follow their leader Malcolm Turnbull in voting with Kevin Rudd’s Government on a new Emissions Trading Scheme.
The Liberal Party is in turmoil with the resignations of five frontbenchers from their portfolios this afternoon in protest against the emissions trading scheme.
Tony Abbott, Sophie Mirabella, Tony Smith and Senators Nick Minchin and Eric Abetz have all quit their portfolios because they cannot vote for the legislation.
Senate whip Stephen Parry has also relinquished his position.
The ETS is Australia’s version of America’s proposed Cap and Trade and the EU’s various carbon reduction schemes: a way of taxing business on its CO2 output. As Professor Plimer pointed out when I interviewed him in the summer, this threatens to cause enormous economic damage in Australia’s industrial and mining heartlands, not least because both are massively dependent on Australia’s vast reserves of coal. It is correspondingly extremely unpopular with Aussie’s outside the pinko, libtard metropolitan fleshpots.

No, these guys are resigning because the political “opposition” is agreeing with the “government”, supposedly they feel they should not be members of the cabinet (main guys) if they are going to vote against the party (actually just the leader).

Charles is right they resigned their positions in protest to the opposition leaders policy in partticular doing a deal with the Government to pass a great part of the legislation.
I don’t know if any of them read the hacked emails but one of them said anything about it.
This will not stop the Government from doing anything it will only force the opposition into a different direction in the future. Right now it’s broken! The Government will probably get everything it wants and Howard is appearing to want everything!

Australia is the largest exporter of black coal on the planet.
They make something like 10 billion dollars per year that way.
In per capita carbon emissions, they are right up there with the U.S., at about 20 tons of CO2 per person per year.
So, the Australian coal interests are very powerful.
This became apparent to me when I saw the truly weird stories coming out of Australia about the Australian bushfires, blaming them on arson, when really, they were in firestorm conditions due partially to global warming.
Australia has also been subjected to a propaganda campaign by Peabody Coal and other coal interests.
Regarding the guys that resigned, I’m sure that the coal interests will take good care of them. They probably have jobs for life, with the coal interests, helping destroy a stable climate at a profit.

The “travesty” remark turns out to be a legitimate appeal for a better climate monitoring system.
The “hide the decline” quote turns out to be a decade old, and so could not possibly refer to any recent supposed decline.
The “Harry read me” files turn out to be a programmer trying to get incompatible database formats to work together.
The Climate Research controversy regarding peer review indicates a real breakdown in the peer review process, over which several editors resigned. Want to bet this was an attempted take-over of a climate journal by paid deniers, which the scientists were opposing?
Yes, lynch mob mentality, spurred on by a demagogue named Alex Jones, who appears to be in psychological denial over global warming. Alex has been taken in by professional paid propagandists, IMO, and so has come down on the wrong side of this issue.

Bushfires are an essential and yearly occurence in Australia. They regenerate trees. Yes coal is an important export to Australia. It is rubbish global warming caused the bushrires. There has been drought for years. The Australian bush is designed to burn. It also regenerates very quickly. My parents were personally affected. The fire bug in there area has been lighting fires for years but was not caught.

Yes, and the area was experiencing a heat wave with truly record breaking temperatures, with extreme bushfire conditions, probably made worse by global warming.

Sunny Meadow, the MPs have only resigned their Front Bench positions as, I think, Parliamentary Secretaries so they are still part of the Opposition but not the Front Bench. This leaves them free to vote against their Leader and the Rudd Government.

I am uncertian about what this affair plans to achieve. I live in Australia, and Tony Abbott is my local representative, however he is also a Rhodes Scholar.
This may just be a power play in order to maintain mainstream belief in the potical system in australia.
More worrying to me then the ETS (emmissions trading scheme) is the behavour of the leader of the opposition, Malcom Turnbull, whom has acted like a dictator over the past few days within his own party. It is very hard to choose the lesser of all evils.

You have a point there, this could be a smoke screen to really bring to the media what the issue is ..ie: ETS, so when they vote it IN on Monday (fingers crossed they don’t), then they are all vetted.
Malcolm Goldman Sachs Turnbull has been playing the dialectic and using NLP to make Abbott feel bad and to alienate the Australia Public who are the majority, into feeling ‘bad’ for voting against it.
Did you email and call Abbotts office? I did, also Baldwin, Mirabella, Ebetz, Wells, Jensen, Smith etc.. give them your support and tell them to make sure Abbott is the challenger, NOT fatso Joe, and they the Must REJECT the ETS.

- plant more trees & plants – extremely cheap & easy to do. Nature takes over – ever been away on holiday for a week? That’s what they would be doing & legislating if this carbon tax were really about protecting the environment. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!
- mercury, pcbs, dioxins and a zillion other deadly chemicals in nature & the sea
- pthalates in nature & coating tablets – feminizing boys
- GE crops – massive experiment with the entire ecosystem & with human health
- plastic packing on EVERYTHING, even fruits & vegetables now!!!!!!!!!!!
- ever increasing building & mining – I don’t see these globalists curtailing their activities at all, do you?
- massive fridges, massive cars, massive coffees for massive fat people, yet families are getting smaller!
- obsolescence built into products, like cars – why can’t it last a lifetime, like it used to?
and so on. the list is endless, yet all we care about is one stupid chemical compound called carbon dioxide.
The carbon movement is a ATTACK ON NATURE, by the very fact that it shifts attention away from the real destruction of the environment.

My guess this will probably go the way of New Zealand. According to the emmissions trading scheme passed in New Zealand a few days ago, there is a five year moritorium before agricultural production gets capped and they lose their biggest industry, becoming in 2015, the first post-industrial, post-agricultural Western country.

The most important development is this. I have lived in Australia all my life, every year we have bushfires, it’s nothing new. I remember because during christmas time as a kid we couldnt travel over to our relatives due to bushfire danger. I also remember when I was little my friend didn’t come to school because her home had been damaged. It’s not until now the politicians are linking it to climate change. I know my country; hot weather and bushfires have been happen every year since i can remember.
Recently, Australian broadcaster Alan Jones reported that the electricty generators cannot survive under an ETS. The hazelwood power station in Victora want out. Private generators have 15 billion dollars of debt to be refinanced before 2013, how will they refinance their debt, as well as money for upgrades and maintenence under an ETS, which will require individual power stations to fork out $400 million a year on Carbon Credits? It’s also reported by a The Royal commisionar of the Victorain Bushfires, that the Feburary Bushfires was caysed due to a faulty powerline which hadn’t been maintained properly. We will be much worse under an ETS and we will face dire consequences if we pass this.
