Call this one of the newest and innovative the ways your government has come up with to battle greenhouse gas emissions.
Indirectly it could be considered a cheeseburger tax, but one of the suggestions offered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) for regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act is to levy a tax on livestock.
The ANPR, released early this year, would give the EPA the authority to regulate greenhouse gas for not only greenhouse gas from manmade sources like transportation and industry, but also “stationary” sources which would include livestock.
The New York Farm Bureau assigned a price tag to the cost of greenhouse gas regulation by the EPA in a release last month.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
“The tax for dairy cows could be $175 per cow, and $87.50 per head of beef cattle. The tax on hogs would upwards of $20 per hog,” the release said. “Any operation with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs would have to obtain permits.”
Kate Galbraith, correspondent for The New York Times, noted on the Times’ “Green Inc.” blog that such a “proposal is far from being enacted” and that the “hysteria may be premature.”
But Rick Krause, senior director of congressional relations for the American Farm Bureau, warned it’s certainly feasible – especially based on the rhetoric of President-elect Barack Obama and the use of the EPA to combat global warming. Such action by an Obama administration would take an act of Congress for livestock to be exempt.
“The new president has been on record as saying that he really supports regulating greenhouse gases out of the Clean Air Act,” Krause said to the Business & Media Institute. “So, we really have to keep an eye on it. Legislation would really be the only way to exempt it at this point – the cow tax.”
Krause said it is difficult to quantify the cost that might be passed directly to the consumer by farmers from the legislation, but predicted it would mean higher costs for dairy production.
“It’s hard to figure what it would do to consumer prices since farmers, unlike other industries, really can’t pass their cost along directly like utilities and things do,” “About the only thing we could realistically come up, in terms of any of this stuff – it would add between 7 and 8 cents per gallon of milk costs to farmers. So it would cost them 7 or 8 cents more to produce a gallon of milk.”
Even the Department of Agriculture warned the EPA that smaller farms and ranches would have difficulty with limits as much as 100 tons annually on emissions:
“If GHG emissions from agricultural sources are regulated under the CAA, numerous farming operations that currently are not subject to the costly and time-consuming Title V permitting process would, for the first time, become covered entities. Even very small agricultural operations would meet a 100-tons-per-year emissions threshold. For example, dairy facilities with over 25 cows, beef cattle operations of over 50 cattle, swine operations with over 200 hogs, and farms with over 500 acres of corn may need to get a Title V permit. It is neither efficient nor practical to require permitting and reporting of GHG emissions from farms of this size. Excluding only the 200,000 largest commercial farms, our agricultural landscape is comprised of 1.9 million farms with an average value of production of $25,589 on 271 acres. These operations simply could not bear the regulatory compliance costs that would be involved.”

What jerks, suggesting a tax on cows. Soon they will suggest we will be taxed for having a baby. Meanwhile big coporations can continue to pollute and poison us.
Will they get away with this like the bailout?

This is nothing but tyranny. It is blatant and total tyranny.
I must say I guess the Founding Fathers would have already called for armed insurrection against this tyranny. 9/11, wars, torture, surveillance, troops on the streets, “climate” taxes… it’s all here.
It’s all here.
You decide.

i am really worried about termitefarts, and particularly bacteriafarts and clamfarts…which is a much larger quantity. the government needs to be in the business of taxing clamfarts

“hysteria may be premature.”?
Perhaps they will be kind enough to inform us when our hysteris is appropriate.

News to ya’ll from a real dairy farmer. Dairy farmers, all except those big agribusiness “farms”, already can barely scrape by. Most regular family farms have already either gone bankrupt from listening to the government tell them they must expand, or they are about to from borrowing too much money from the banks that they can’t make back. Something like this would be the final nail in those people’s coffins. The only ones, it seems, who would not be effected are folks with VERY small farms. Aha! So, back to the days of 15 cows to milk by hand! Back to neighborhood dairies, screw big business! But, that also means that a lot MORE people will have to go into the farming business to make this work. Oh horrors! Perhaps the answer is to get back to an agrarian civilization! Then only the BIG BOYS will have to pay for all their polluting (herbicides, pesticides, hormones, steroids, AND huge ponds of cow poop sitting around when it SHOULD be being used for natural FERTILIZER!)
Now, I have one simple question. Didn’t I read somewhere that methane (the gas from cows) could be used for FUEL????????

Do trees, grass and flowers fart? What about seaweed and pondweed? What about birds? Do bees and flies fart?
December 31st, 2008 at 12:25 pm
How does charging for exhaling and farting going to “curb” greenhouse gasses? Simply by making it so expensive to operate, they will put farms out, the ones that are left anyway. So then there’s less gases, less animals. Aren’t they brilliant. Get up and REVOLT! C’mon SHEEP, stand up for your fellow farm animals!!
December 31st, 2008 at 12:40 pm
In the natural sciences, earth sciences, the three so-called “greenhouse” gasses are, in order of potency, are 1. Water vapor 2. Methane 3. Carbon dioxide. Now, the idea was they were going after CO2 because its greenhouse mechanism was much more subtle and not very well understood, hence, they could scapegoat it much more easily because the general public could be easily swayed by fancy, scientific-like pontification and emotional propaganda campaigns. Methane would be harder to “tax” because of its prevalence and the fact that undersea microbes produce a prodigious amount of the substance, far more than cattle production. Water vapor was equally off the hook because really once they tried to tax water – more than they already do – the gig would be up and the whole carbon credit/tax scam would be laid bare.
I’m really surprised they’re starting to go after methane which means the situation is far worse than we’ve previously feared.

Won’t be long we will have meter tracking each fart. The worst it smells and length the more you pay. Via mail your monthly fart bill.

Of all those who voted in the 2008 “election,” 99% voted for one or the other of the two corporate-owned major party candidates (even though everyone had THREE or more candidates to choose from).
Thus, it’s a virtual given that the vast majority of both beef and dairy farmers voted for those two candidates as well, which means they’ll be getting EXACTLY what they voted for in 2009.
That’s what happens when you let the intellectual whores in the corporate TV “news” media bullshit you into believing that you have only TWO candidates from which to “choose” even when there are as many SIX candidates on the ballot.
If you lean to the “left,” you should have voted for Ralph Nader.
If you lean to the “right,” you should have voted for Chuck Baldwin.

SHAME on you, America, for allowing self-serving partisan hacks in the establishment media effectively brainwash you into not even regarding candidates like Nader and Baldwin as viable options.

Suddenly, the media has taken a huge interest in animal abuse at slaughter houses and done an about face to psychologically encourage people to become vegetarians. This ludicrous tax is part of the whole scheme to take away valuable food resources–by adding severe financial burdens on small farmers. When I first decided to become an organic farmer, I was stunned at all the fees the state had dreamed up to charge farmers for getting certified. And when the fed government took over certification the fees became sheer extortion.
It’s all part of the big scheme to reduce our numbers so the big boys can turn the earth into their private playground–sans the useless eaters–you and me folks.
And while I have heard animals fart–especially my fat dog, I have never heard my two sheep make any sound other than Baaaaah. Methane gas is being harvested all over the world as a fuel for cooking and heating–gathered from the wastes of pigs & cows. However, in this country the agri-industry would rather let all that waste be collected enormous ponds of millions of gallons of stinking muck–which pollutes water and air. Speaking of pollution–how much air time is being devoted to that enormous spill of toxic coal fly ash which is threatening the lives of thousands of people? So much for “clean coal.”
Meanwhile, hundreds of power plants that are connected to industry like gold mining and cement plants have no regulation…and I have never heard any mention of their pollution in the fake news either.

“These operations simply could not bear the regulitory compliance costs that would be involved”
Exactly that is the idea.
Get rid of the little guy so the people will have to go to the grocery store, screw the little farmer, AGAIN!!!
That way we can make it easier to get them to accept a microchip!!!
Problem solved.

Eunice,
It’s all a scam, all they want is big agri business so they can make more profit.
You think this is bad, wait til we are all taxed for breathing, aka CO2 TAX.

Folks, it all boils down to extermination. The New World Order just wants you to DIE.
THEY WANT YOU DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD.
But they can’t just say “Kill yourself because we want you to be dead” so they need to scam you with all this crap.
Besides, this CO2 and methane tax scams are just regulatory measures to control you and further expand the NWO. The big killing will start as soon as they have everybody in their control grid. Then the neutron bombs and bioweapons will go off until a “reasonable” number of manageable slaves remains. Then the sons of today’s Rothschilds and Rockefellers et al will dust off to their wildlife habitat retreats while you and your children (if alive at all) serve in hermetically sealed compact prison cities under 100% surveillance and burocratic planning.
It all boils down to this.
They want to kill you. They ARE killing you right now. Do you understand?

Does codex have it’s fingers involved in the back ground? Total control the food supply so they can poison us good.

This has received a lot of radio press time on the farm show (big show on WHO) in Des Moines, Iowa. This is just one more bullshit (literally) way to STEAL the fruits of you or your farmer’s labor. A tax on animal farts! Give me a fucking break.
January 1st, 2009 at 9:28 am
I bet places like China doesn’t have taxes on animal farts, you see this is the bullshit right here (no pun intended). As our western economies are being crushed with ridiculous and overbearing legislation combating illusionary threats such as global warming China grows ever more powerful.
In the not too distant future its not gonna be the chinese people working in the sweat shops its gonna be us!
January 1st, 2009 at 11:14 am
Just like the Nationalists that run our American Government now, wanting to stick their regulating noses up some poor animals behind.
January 1st, 2009 at 12:00 pm
We’re now letting these people tax farts. WTF!
January 1st, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Once the National Animal ID system is in place they will have the ability to collect those taxes on small farmers and put them out of business.
I would like to see Alex spend more time on NAIS so we can build a grass roots movement against NAIS.
Once NAIS is in place you will to be able to BUY or SELL an animal. That means a captive supple and an end to families raising livestock for their own food.
NAIS will affect everyone that eats so don’t think this is strictly an issue for farmers.
The Farm Bureau supports NAIS just like they support Guest worker amnesty programs for illegal immigrants.
They also support NAFT, GAT and GMO foods.
In fact when Monsanto wins a court case against a farmer over GMO crops, Monsanto gives the money to the Farm Bureau for education programs.
Recently Alex had a spokesman for the Farm Bureau on his show and he all but kissed the guys ass.
When Alex started talking about how bad NAIS is the spokesman played Alex like a fool by saying they (FB) were concerned about who will have access to the NAIS records and Alex bought the spin.
Alex doesn’t get fooled to often but he got fooled that day.
Alex needs to bury the hatchet with Derry Brownfield and bring him on as a guest. Alex needs to do several shows on NAIS.
Since the Farm Bureau supports NAIS I’m asking everyone that eats to call the FB and tell them you will never do business with them until they stop NAIS.
That’s right a boycott of the Farm Bureau. FB is an insurance company and only 23% of the client’s nation wide are farmers, that means a boycott of the FB can work.
I’m also asking everyone to call the Farm bureau at 202-406-3600 or contact them at their web site http://www.fb.org and tell them about your refusal to support them over the NAIS issue.
They claim NAIS is voluntary but its not.
The states are passing mandatory NAIS rules at the state level using Federal grant money.
Once the Elite have control of our food supply resistance will be futile.
January 1st, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Cow farts may seem funny but the implications will put our food supply in the hands of the Elite.

I would like to see Alex spend more time on NAIS so we can build a grass roots movement against NAIS.

That means a captive supple and an end to families raising livestock for their own food.

While I agree with prepare now on the substance of the post. It is on us to make the needed affiliations and fight these battles. He does a huge service to humanity for doing what he does. We the People have let the Ideas that this Country were founded on slip. He is reminding us of out duty to make sure they do not die.
These people in in Government do nothing but throw money at spending problems. YOU ALL ( including me ) need to spend a few hours a week sending E-mails,writing letters and making phone calls to these people on EVERY issue. Hold there feet to the fire. It is up to you. By saying someone else should do something about it does not do anything besides giving you ammunition to say ” I knew someone should have done something”

I live near a oil refinery. The amount of methane vented because of processing problems is more than a million cows could fart in ten years.
Yet the oil companies get fined what is equal to us being fined 1 penny for speeding for the 100th time.
This is a ploy to undo the family farm.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
On the surface, you want to scream “this is total insanity!”, but there is something more insidious going on here than just insanity.
Under the guise of green, PETA and others are working to make animals more and more expensive. They’ve found a willing accomplice with the government. PETA wants everyone to stop eating animals. The government will certainly go along with it because they get more of your money through taxation.
The most insidious aspect of all, further control of the food source is one more incremental step to population control.
