EPIC to FAA: Establish Privacy Standards for Drone Use

EPIC [1]
April 24, 2013

EPIC has submitted comments [2] to the Federal Aviation Administration, urging the agency to mandate minimum privacy standards for drone operators.

In 2012, Congress told [3] the Agency to implement a comprehensive plan to integrate drones into the National Airspace. Shortly after, EPIC, joined by over 100 other organizations, experts, and members of the public, petitioned [4] the agency to address privacy in the integration process. EPIC’s petition noted, “drones greatly increase the capacity for domestic surveillance.”

In February 2013, the Agency responded [5] to EPIC’s petition, announcing [6] it would “address [privacy issues] through engagement and collaboration with the public.”

As a result, the FAA published a Notice [7] with proposed privacy requirements for drone operators. EPIC recommended that the FAA mandate the proposed privacy standards, which are based on Fair Information Practices, and maintain a public database of all drone operators.
