EU lawmakers open battle against sheep, goat tags

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - British and Irish lawmakers in the European Parliament launched a campaign on Tuesday against a rule that would make electronic tags for millions of sheep and goats across the EU compulsory from next year.

Britain has by far the European Union’s largest flock, with around 33 million sheep, roughly a quarter of the bloc’s total. Spain follows closely, then Greece.

Last year, EU farm ministers agreed to introduce electronic tags by the end of 2009, part of a strategy to prevent epidemics of contagious diseases like foot-and-mouth and replace a system where flocks of sheep and herds of goats are only tracked when moved from farm to farm, sold at market or sent for slaughter.

British MEPs have condemned the idea and have launched a cross-party campaign to pressure the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm that authored the law later agreed by ministers, to reopen negotiations to make tagging voluntary.

“The idea that 33 million sheep in Britain will be tagged by January 2010, it’s frankly not going to happen. The Commission is living in cloud cuckoo land,” said UK Conservative MEP Neil Parish, also chairman of the Parliament’s agriculture committee.

    PERFECT TITLE!

  6. bootroll Says:

Tagging farm animals, how ridiculous. The UK should instead consider tagging the scientists from Porton Down and other germ centres, plus MPs, ministers and spooks. Let’s track them!

  7. freydenker Says:

Thats great. Those tags are associated with generating cancer in pets, now we can have mandatory cancer in the meat we eat!

  8. AndreaL Says:

This is getting totally out of hand, it seems that if it moves, has the potential to move or can move by the aid of something else that moves TAG IT AND TAG IT FAST. Now whats to say that there’ll be no health risk to people attached to this? Whats to say that these tags won’t find their way into your dinner?

It’s a sick and twisted ideology forced onto the public by sick and twisted people (if that’s what you can call them).

  9. dembellyfull Says:

They should be told in no uncertain terms to go tag themselves. Once all livestock requires chips, it will be illegal to keep and breed animals to feed your families in the hard times. Or if you do, they can round up an exterminate your animals in the name of whatever the disease of the week is.

Supporting local independent farmers and taking back control of our food supply is key to maintaining some semblance of personal freedom for the population.

Do you think we could borrow a tag from you in Europe? We have a president over here his name is “W”. We need to tag him because sometimes he likes to wander and can get lost easily. He makes speeches that are senseless and he babbles and drools and can’t pronounce the word “nuclear”. Even though he can’t pronounce the word nuclear it seems this guy wants to use them on several countries around the world. We need to tag him soon, to keep track of him and keep him out of trouble. Thanks alot. Sincerely, Concerned Citizens of the Planet.

  11. LR Says:

Are they looking to tag the farm animal type of sheep and goats or the human kind?
