The European Commission is looking in to the efficacy of fitting black-box recorders into motorists’ cars.
The study, entitled Project Veronica, is looking at whether installing Event Data Recorders into cars would be useful to authorities and companies such as insurance firms in determining what exactly occurs in the moments leading up to and the moments immediately following road traffic accidents. The EDRs would be capable of tracking a driver’s every move and this has made the project unpopular with civil rights groups. Although information gathered by the EDR such as when brakes are applied, when the horn is used and when the indicators were turned on could all be useful in determining who is at fault during a crash, some say that the technology could be used to keep a constant eye on a drivers every move.
The 2.4 million pound study was commissioned by the European commission’s transport arm and taken three years to complete. Researchers believe the technology will improve safety if its recommendations of fitting the devices into all cars are carried out. According to the research drivers with black boxes were 10 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal accident, and their repair bills fell by as much as 25 percent. Ralf Schmidt-Cotta, director of the study, which is being carried out at the German car-parts group Continental, said, “The technology is like an independent, neutral witness. For police and insurance companies, it will be invaluable. It will also revolutionise road safety because of the psychological impact of having the boxes installed. Drivers know they cannot get away with simple excuses after an accident because their movements are recorded. They therefore drive more carefully.”
But a spokesman for Privacy International, Simon Davies warned that the black-boxes, similar to the devices used in aircraft, could be used alongside other technology to keep people under constant surveillance. But authors of the report say that Project Veronica addresses these concerns and points out that any data collected would be of little use other than in helping to explain what goes on in the lead up to an accident. They will only store data recorded 30 seconds prior to a crash and 15 seconds afterwards. The boxes will also alert emergency services to an accident. The project goes on to point out that the main reason for installing the EDRs was to make drivers more responsible, speed up court hearings and give a better insight into the causes of traffic accidents.
In Britain, the boxes are installed as standard in many emergency vehicles. When London’s Metropolitan police put them in 3,500 of their cars in 1999 there was a 2 million pound reduction in accident costs in 18 months. In the United States black-boxes became widespread after manufacturers agreed to adopt them on a voluntary basis. They are now standard in more than two-thirds of new vehicles. However, motoring groups and the British government are concerned about their use in the European Union. The Department for Transport said it had concerns about privacy and legal issues, while a spokesman for the AA [Automobile Association] warned that making black-boxes mandatory would be impractical.

There are already “Black Boxes” installed in ALL cars that utilize driver airbags and it is mounted under the airbag on the steering wheel and this has been STANDARD since 1993!

I’ve predicted this for years. When lo-jack came out, I said to my little group, that it WILL be eventually made mandatory, by the insurance companies. Or at least, a BIG discount if you have it. You know, to protect you, and help the police if your car is stolen. The fact that it will allow the cops to locate you, or turn-off your car, is simply a coincidence. Really. Trust them.

I just saw a commercial on television this evening . It showed a SUV getting stolen with the popular on-board thingy , On-Star , the Safety, Navigation & Communication device that is standard in most later GM models.
The On-Star people transmit a message to the police reporting the thief , then the police sees a SUV matching the discription and On-Star tells them they will flash the lights on the suspected SUV to verify indentification , the lights flash on the SUV by way of On-Star and then On-Star tells the police they will disable the SUV’s engine in which the SUV stops running and pulls over , the police make the arrest and the bad guys are put in jail .
That’s great if your a bad guy but what happens if your a good guy ? scary .

It sucks. Even us cops like to see how far we can push our cars when all is quiet and it’s safe to do so. Give us 100mph+ roads please. Not to do so is just plain silly.

Wake up you morons! It’s too late to do anything without force of arms, and you are too cowardly, disorganised, and stupid to mount a revolution. It’s over! Vote with your feet while you can. Soon even leaving will be restricted. I escaped Prison America so I speak from a position of relative authority.

So true.
But who is going to fire the first shot?
How to start a armed revolution?
10 guys with guns are nuts.
One million is an army.
We must be aware something has to be done.
And we must be aware only a bloody revolution can save our country.

Maybe the ‘black-box’ will reveal that the insanity of ‘drive-by-wire’ engineering is at fault when many cars suddenly surge forward out of control, sometimes killing the occupants. Ask Toyota. They know all about it.
If you buy a car with no physical link between your foot and the throttle body (cable) then expect the worst and pray it never happens to you.

I think the Toyota Motors has a very poor engineering skill. These companies make too many PRs about their fly-by-wire desing. But there is no fail-safe system there apparently.
The horrible accident of Toyota Lexus in the US was never reported in Japan.
The new CEO of Toyota made a very short mention about it only recently so the accident is now well known to the Japanese people.
Now it seems the Toyota Motors is very afraid of a lawsuit against them by the family of the crash victims.
You are not supposed to buy these faulty cars from the Japanese company.

HO HO HO and California wants to charge insurance by the mile. That means that someone is going to have to read your odometer on a regular basis which we know isn’t going to happen or GPS will be mandatory in all cars and will go to some central processing deal.
A few years ago there was some article in a trade magazine that some State DOT was reading cell phone data ‘anonymously to determine mileage, speed etc for the purpose of possibly (probably) charging mileage taxes.
What a bunch of bullshit.
In my state our DOT has tons of money and then the governor pulls money out of this fund to pay for his welfare programs to generate more votes for his party.
What a con game.
It’s one big lie. First we charge enough money to fund everything and if we were short money then what would be wrong with adding another penny on to the existing double overhead gouge taxes? It’s just plainly another way to infringe on our Constitutional rights and spy on citizens…..especially dissenters.

Nice one Hangtime55. And 70% of all criminals are repeat offenders.
So our leaders and law enforcement people spends zillions on this technology and then the car thief goes to municiple court and gets propation and a $500 fine that he can’t pay.
So, he goes and steals some more cars to pay for all of that.
What a joke. It’s not about locking up people who can’t blend in with lawbiding society.
It is about lawyers having work, courts having work, coppers having work, prisons having work.
It seems that all that we can do in this country is make bombs and process criminals.

This is a MOST EXCELLENT IDEA!
And, while they are at it, they should also make the black boxes able to detect cigarette smoke – and if it smells any filthy smoke at all, the cars should immediately lock up and be unable to start.
Furthermore, the boxes should send a signal to the local police for them to go out and arrest whoever was trying to smoke and drive.
These sorts of crimes against humanity should not go unpunished any longer.
