    Evidence that solar variations impact both temperature and rainfall.

    The exact causes of climate change remain a mystery to science. Many researchers link recent global warming to changes in the sun. Others remain skeptical, claiming that the sun varies only very slowly, over periods of millions of years. They say that no hard evidence exists for a solar effect on recent climate changes.

    Now, new research may have provided just that evidence, with data demonstrating that solar variations have had major effects on the earth’s climate as recent as 2,000 years ago. The research, conducted by a team of scientists from the Universities of Ohio, Minnesota, and Texas at Arlington, confirms that, during periods when the earth received less solar radiation, the Atlantic Ocean cooled, rainfall levels dropped, and North America experienced periods of intense drought. Some droughts lasted as long as a century.

    Seven such events were detected, occurring once every 1,500 years, a period that matches the so-called “Bond Events” cycle of solar variation.

    According to the study’s lead author, Greg Springer, the correspondence provides “convincing evidence” of a solar effect on North American climate. “This really nails down the idea of solar influence on continental drought,” said Springer.

    The critical data was obtained from an 8-inch long stalagmite from a cave in West Virginia. As the stalagmite grew over a period of several thousand years, its composition precisely recorded fluctuations in the Earth’s climate.

    Data more recent than 2,000 years ago wasn’t examined, as the authors feared the impact of Native Americans on nearby watersheds may have influenced the results. However, Springer tells DailyTech that analysis of river discharges around the area confirm that the region is still being impacted by such changes today.

      The sun, affecting climate, wow that’s just shocking!

      Yeah, in this day and age we are technologically advanced but intellectually primitive.

      “he himself is not sure that the recent level of variance is enough to explain all the warming the Earth has undergone in the past 100 years” …

      If both global warming (due to increased emmissions) AND variances of the suns output are both affecting our climate (possibly explaining ‘all the warming the Earth has undergone’), then surely man made global warming could actually be a good thing – assuming it exists, which isn’t proved yet so far as I can see.

      Variances in solar output cause both rainfall AND local land and sea-surface temperature changes. Now have a look at where 2008 is in this picure… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I.....e-data.png (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a scary graph before now)

      Wouldn’t global warming then offet only the temperature aspect of our climate? The solar rainfall part of the suns influence would lack a man made compensation mechanism like gas emmissions and other activities contributing to storing of ‘heat’ in the atmosphere. Maybe the quite dramatic changes in rainfall patterns we’re seeing now aren’t being caused by global warming at all (which is what a lot of people think, at least according to the media), but are being caused by the sun?

      Makes sense, more sense than carbon emissions

    5. Richard Says:

      DUHHHHHHH!!!! And in further news about climate and weather, standby for tomorrows breaking news report on scientists having conclusive proof that humidity in the atmosphere increases when it rains.

    6. Richard Says:

      DUHHHHHHH!!!! And in further breaking news scietntists beleive that rain may definitely be a leading cause in higher humidity levels.

      What a load of bullshit!

      “They say that no hard evidence exists for a solar effect on recent climate changes.

      Now, new research may have provided just that evidence, with data demonstrating that solar variations have had major effects on the earth’s climate as recent as 2,000 years ago.”

      2000 years ago is RECENT??? What utter tripe! The fact is, there is STILL no hard evidence that the Sun is responsible for the RECENT (ie last 200 years) warming! This evidence relates to over 10 times as long ago, and is not even NEW, really, as other scientists have studied these events as well. What is different about this study is that it is higher resolution and more complete.

      In fact this article basically turns what was REALLY going on in this study into a lie. Here are some excepts from an Ohio University press release:

      “A stalagmite in a West Virginia cave has yielded the most detailed geological record to date on climate cycles in eastern North America over the past 7,000 years. The new study confirms that during periods when Earth received less solar radiation, the Atlantic Ocean cooled, icebergs increased and precipitation fell, creating a series of century-long droughts.”

      “Geologist Gerald Bond suggested that every 1,500 years, weak solar activity caused by fluctuations in the sun’s magnetic fields cools the North Atlantic Ocean and creates more icebergs and ice rafting, or the movement of sediment to ocean floors. Other scientists have sought more evidence of these so-called “Bond events” and have studied their possible impact on droughts and precipitation. But studies to date have been hampered by incomplete, less detailed records, Springer said.”

      “Other studies have gleaned climate cycle data from lakes, but fish and other critters tend to churn the sediment, muddying the geological record there, said study co-author Harold Rowe, an assistant professor of geological sciences at the University of Texas at Arlington.

      “(The caves) haven’t been disturbed by anything. We can see what happened on the scale of a few decades. In lakes of the Appalachian region, you’re looking more at the scale of a millennium,” Rowe said.”

      “The climate record suggests that North America could face a major drought event again in 500 to 1,000 years, though Springer said that manmade global warming could offset the cycle.

      “Global warming will leave things like this in the dust. The natural oscillations here are nothing like what we would expect to see with global warming,” he said.”

      @Everyone

      I can’t believe just how gullible some of you people are. You take ONE piece of evidence (out of context) and claim that is PROOF, but no amount of evidence for AGW is PROOF! Even the people who did the study say it has nowhere NEAR the affect of AGW, and you are all acting like it DISPROVES AGW! What bullshit!

    8. Karmakaze Says:

      @Richard

      By the way, rain doesn’t cause humidity! Humidity is a measure of the water vapour in the air. High humidity causes rain, not the other way round!

    9. Nescio Says:

      lol have to agree with Karmakaze on the vapour comment…hehe
