A federal appeals court on Thursday struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal law that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.
In the ruling, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston said the law discriminates against gay couples and is unconstitutional.
President Obama announced last year that the Department of Justice would no longer defend DOMA in court, provoking House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to seek outside counsel to do so.
Earlier this month, Obamaendorsed gay marriage, saying he had concluded “personally” that same-sex couples should have that right. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney reiterated his view that marriage is “a relationship between a man and a woman.”
