  • Fox News Host Refuses To Talk About Russia-Georgia War, Insists On Covering Edwards’

    Think Progress
    Sunday, Aug 10, 2008

Yesterday, Russia launched a major military offensive against Georgia, which Georgia has called “a state of war.” Nearly two thousand people have died and the conflict risks sparking a wider war. Also yesterday, former senator John Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair in 2006.

Fox News has decided which story is worthy of more coverage. Today, host Gregg Jarrett interviewed PBS’s Bonnie Erbe. “We have these huge stories going on like the one you’re reporting in Georgia,” Erbe noted when asked about Edwards. Jarrett, however, completely ignored Erbe’s comment on Georgia and continued to talk about Edwards, offering praise for the National Enquirer:

JARRETT: You know, his excuse for lying is absolutely stunning. He claims he denied the affair because the reporting by the National Enquirer was “99 percent wrong.” Well, so far, they’ve been about 100 percent right.

    (Article continues below)

Throughout the segment, Jarrett refused to talk about anything except for Edwards’s affair:

ERBE: The American public have told pollsters, this political season they want substance. Both these candidates have expressed support for allowing Georgia into NATO. … We could have been on the verge of nuclear war. Those are the kinds of the things that the American public wants to see discussed.

JARRETT: Right. You know, but getting back to Edwards, during the Monica Lewinsky affair, Edwards absolutely ripped into Bill Clinton.

Erbe called the Edwards story “water cooler talk,” noting again that Edwards’s affair is “not the stuff the American public wants to hear about in this election cycle.” Again, Jarrett wholly ignored her, responding with more Edwards talk:

JARRETT: Well it’s amazing, he thought could get away with it, and if he had become the Democratic nominee, my goodness.

Of course, this is nothing new for Fox, which has a history of covering tabloid issues more than wars.

    1. Professor Tim Says:

There’s an old adage: “Any publicity is good publicity”. Perhaps it’s time to start ignoring FOX news, or actually start talking to their SPONSORS. These people are in BUSINESS to MAKE MONEY by SELLING AIR (advertising time). Despite the fact that this organization does receive guidance and some financial support from the Black Government, at the end of the day, it’s the SPONSORS who will dictate “what plays”. In this time of staggering losses reported by major American companies, a few hundred letters and emails really can do the trick. How’s about all the RON PAUL people who sent in their hard-earned money for the Congressman get together to make a few phone calls and send a few emails to the SPONSORS… That won’t cost more than $1.00 and can REALLY hit FOX where it HURTS!!!

    2. Rachel Says:

How about let stop watching the propaganda machine altogether? Seems like if enough people quit watching, it will just die off. Old media is dead. That is why they want to control the web so much, it is a font of information in the era of lies. On the web, YOU can control what info you receive, not the other way around. I am sure this scares the bejesus out of those power players.

    3. Gary Says:

I’ve already stopped watching the MSM. Fox, cbs, nbc, abc, cnn, bbc, most of them are reading from the same script anyway. They’re not worth my time. I also let people know how bad they are, and I find that they’re already aware of it, and don’t believe everything they see either. I think most people already know how slanted ALL of the MSM are.

    4. Nephtys Says:

I find Pravda right next to FoxNews completely odd. There’s an old saying in Russia, because they lived under state run propaganda under communism, that they were surprised the Americans believe their propaganda because they didn’t.

    5. Jeff Says:

There is a great article in the British paper “The Guardian” called “Why TV News In The US Is Utter Rubbish.”

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/comm.....ctions2008

The writer, Kieren McCarthy, hits it out of the ballpark. The whole Edwards’ thing is just another “weapon of mass DISTRACTION.”

    6. Neo Bagration Says:

Local police cover up their totalitarian police state actions by Price George’s County SWAT team.

      Got police state?

YES! The Labrador Retriever’s were a threat to the police? There’s no such thing as a no knock warrant in Maryland? So just kick in our doors whenever you want, shot our dogs, and threaten to kill us?

    7. dazza Says:

wow, again its stories about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s twins more important story than the recent war that just got started which is the beginning of the 2nd cold war.

    8. WakeUp Says:

Hey Professor, here’s one former Fox News junkie that was converted by Ron Paul. I sent emails to them directly, to Newscorp and to sponsors telling them EXACTLY why I was removing my name from the “Fox Friends” email alerts and was no longer tuning in to their channel. It hasn’t been on my television for almost a year. Hopefully, an accumulation of these small dents will start to cause some real damage.

    9. Tim Says:

Dazza: there ain’t nothing cold about this war!

Of course Fox Noise doesn’t want to discuss the Russia vs Georgia war. They haven’t been told what to say yet. Once they are told what their position is then they will talk about it. Looks good on Erbe to bring up the NATO angle. Does Georgia now ask for membership to “protect itself”?

Professor Tim (not me :) had it right. Email Fox’s sponsors and tell them you won’t buy their products until they stop advertising on Fox. Vote with your wallet folks. It works.

    10. 1bassman9 Says:

In America the MSM has morphed the word news into the word entertainment in order to protect themselves from complicity of the major crimes they would be held accountable for that go as far back as the Kennedy assassination. There dereliction of duty to report the facts and not just phony commission reports is a major factor in why we are in the mess we are in, in America today. The words ‘Truth” and “Ethics” seem to have been removed from our modern day dictionaries just as the words “checks” and “balances” have been removed from our Constitution. When dynasties, Bush-Clinton, control the judiciary and subpoenas can be ignored as if they were pieces of toilet paper, and all Congress can do is make idle threats to act but never follow through, our Republic is on life support ready to have the plug pulled. We have to many lawyers,cunning-linguists,in politics today and not enough doctors who believe in their oaths, not the Frist kind, that will do and say what is needed in order to revive
our Costitution and our Republic. Faux News and it’s Ken and Barbie commentators and the Murdoch-Ailes propaganda machine are only a small part of the problem. The biggest problem is “Apathy”.

Greg Jarrett’s journalistic prowess at times is just too much to bear. I mean the guy is just plain awesome. Often I am moved to tears when he summarizes the world for me into words I can understand. He is like a master magician with information and sometimes I feel smarter just watching his lips form the news. Its too bad he has the entire field of journalism on lockdown. As a child I wanted to be an investigative journalist but with people like Greg Jarrett around I am afraid my dreams are just that far out of reach. Fox News Forever!

    12. Gregory Fegel Says:

Since the 1960s, the CIA has had links with a Guatemalan Army unit — the G-2 — that maintains a network of torture centers and body dumps throughout Guatemala and has killed thousands of Guatemalan civilians. Operating out of the US Embassy, CIA undercover agents, secretly working with the G-2 — a group of 2,000 elite Guatemalan Army Intelligence officers — have trained, advised, armed, and equipped these officers to torture, assassinate and disappear thousands of Guatemalan dissidents. Some G-2 bases have their own crematoriums where the tortured and murdered are disposed of.

And, Israel has played a very important role in Guatemala since 1977, supplying weapons, building munitions factories, and training soldiers.

      http://www.thirdworldtraveler......_Guat.html

“The Israelis may be seen as American proxies in Honduras and Guatemala,” stated Israeli journalist, Yoav Karni in Yediot Ahronot. Also, Ha’aretz correspondent Gidon Samet has explained that the most important features of the U.S.-Israeli strategic cooperation in the 1980s were not in the Middle East, but with Central America. “The U.S. needs Israel in Africa and Latin America, among other reasons, because of the government’s difficulties in obtaining congressional authorization for its ambitious aid programs and naturally, for military actions,” Gamet wrote on November 6, 1983, adding that America has “long been interested in using Israel as a pipeline for military and other aid” to Central America. Earlier that same year, Yosef Priel reported in Davar that Latin America “has become the leading market for Israeli arms exports.”

Who are these governments so willingly snapping up weapons manufactured in the Holy Land? One illustrative example is, yes, Guatemala. In 1981, shortly after Israel agreed to provide military aid to this oppressive regime, a Guatemalan officer had a feature article published in the army’s Staff College review. In that article, the officer praised Adolf Hitler, National Socialism, and the Final Solution-quoting extensively from “Mein Kampf” and chalking up Hitler’s anti-Semitism to the “discovery” that communism was part of a “Jewish conspiracy.” Despite such seemingly incompatible ideology, Israel’s estimated military assistance to Guatemala in 1982 was $90 million.

    14. Gregory Fegel Says:

Israel began selling arms to Georgia about seven years ago following an initiative by Georgian citizens who immigrated to Israel and became businesspeople.

“They contacted defense industry officials and arms dealers and told them that Georgia had relatively large budgets and could be interested in purchasing Israeli weapons,” says a source involved in arms exports.

The military cooperation between the countries developed swiftly. The fact that Georgia’s defense minister, Davit Kezerashvili, is a former Israeli who is fluent in Hebrew contributed to this cooperation.

“His door was always open to the Israelis who came and offered his country arms systems made in Israel,” the source said. “Compared to countries in Eastern Europe, the deals in this country were conducted fast, mainly due to the defense minister’s personal involvement.”

Among the Israelis who took advantage of the opportunity and began doing business in Georgia were former Minister Roni Milo and his brother Shlomo, former director-general of the Military Industries, Brigadier-General (Res.) Gal Hirsch and Major-General (Res.) Yisrael Ziv.

Roni Milo conducted business in Georgia for Elbit Systems and the Military Industries, and with his help Israel’s defense industries managed to sell to Georgia remote-piloted vehicles (RPVs), automatic turrets for armored vehicles, antiaircraft systems, communication systems, shells and rockets.

According to Israeli sources, Gal Hirsch gave the Georgian army advice on the establishment of elite units such as Sayeret Matkal and on rearmament, and gave various courses in the fields of combat intelligence and fighting in built-up areas.

That was one of the strangest conversations I have ever listened to! Was he not understanding what she was saying? I wonder how many people who were watching that just casually accepted this as normal? Have we been invaded by alien zombies??? LOL! Its no wonder so many people have such strange conspiracy theories involving zombie aliens…shape shifters…ect

      CREEPY.

    17. Mark Says:

      Bill Schultz:

No country could’ve pulled off 9/11 without the aid of our government. And theirs a good chance that other intelligence agencies may have been involved also. The “Jews” couldn’t have done it without the help of “non-Jews”. If you mean Mossad was involved, you’re probably right. Why not say Mossad rather than JEWS? How about elements within the Israeli government? And I guess everyone working for ABC or any of their affiliates are in on all of this, too.

The obvious reason Alex doesn’t say 9/11 was a Jew job is because it wasn’t. It was no more a Jew job than a Christian job. The perps probably could have cared less which god they were sending their victims to meet.

And what exactly do your comments have to do with the clip?

      Dr.W …more than people can imagine…your right.

    19. Alienation Says:

Fox News Host Refuses To Talk About Russia-Georgia War, Insists On Covering Edwards’…

How exactly does that come as a surprise? Perhaps Satyam at thinkprogress.org (the author) would do better to skip his/her little 1 or 2 paragraph articles (apparently that’s all he/she is capable of regurgitating at any one time) for just a second and figure out what think and progress actually mean. In other words, lose the ignorance and naivete and maybe your story would have just sat in the back of your brain where it belonged. I would hope not many other people were surprised that a Fox journalist would say anything other than what they were told or “allowed” to talk about. Come on people…wake up! This isn’t news and once again Alex Jones is caught regurgitating an irrelevant article obviously written by some college kid between test crams.

    21. chris Says:

Hey Jeff isn’t ironic that a Brittish paper is willing to trash American television when there news channels often provide the same sort of crap? We used to see a lot of BBC in Iraq and it was often filled with irrelevant information. In fact I think the American press learned these tricks from studing European news agencies.

    22. Lese Majeste Says:

FOX and National Inquirer announced today that they would merge their operations.

A spokesman was quoted as saying, “Why not? Hell, we already cover the same trashy stories that have no educational value.
Why fight over the limited space in the gutter “infotainment” groups like us, FOX and CNN, share?”

Wall Street was exuberant over the news, with stocks gaining a new low.
This, an analyst noted, was due to the fact that nearly all the traders were preoccupied with watching the latest tawdry reports about Edwards on all 24 hour “News Channels.”

Later today, both FOX and CNN will air a special that all America has been talking about, the hard-hitting truth about the aliens that kidnapped the love child of Britney and OJ, today, on the best in the business.

Elsewhere in the news, that loud sound heard across the nation today was America heaving a collective barf.

    23. Maasanova Says:

Well you have to give him credit for staying on that s---ty topic. It takes a lot of strength to be that fixated on such a non-story.
