The year is 2020 and the gasoline tax is history. In its place you get a monthly tax bill based on each mile you drove — tracked by a Global Positioning System device in your car and uploaded to a billing center.
What once was science fiction is being field-tested by the University of Iowa to iron out the wrinkles should a by-the-mile road tax ever be enacted.

Besides the technological advances making such a tax possible, the idea is getting a hard push from a growing number of transportation experts and officials. That is because the traditional by-the-gallon fuel tax, struggling to keep up with road building and maintenance demands, could fall even farther behind as vehicles’ gas mileage rises and more alternative-fuel vehicles come on line.
The idea of shifting to a by-the-mile tax has been discussed for years, but it now appears to be getting more serious attention. A federal commission, after a two-year study, concluded earlier this year that the road tax was the “best path forward” to keep revenues flowing to highway and transportation projects, and could be an important new tool to help manage traffic and relieve congestion.

Replaced huh? I doubt it. That imply removing the gas tax which they will never do. What you’ll see is BOTH taxes applied.

OK, this is planned for 2011 in the netherlands , this year 2009 a test will start in Amsterdam (voluntairy). Drivers who inlist for the field test of this GPS based tracking system , will get 100euro’s a month, but when driving in morning and evening trafic on major highways, there will be a deduction from that 100euros per driven kilometer. therefore stimulating the driver not to pass that highway at certain times/ take the train etc. Atleast that are the arguements.. Ok 2 MONTHS AGO HERE IN THE nTHERLANDS THE ” SMART ENERGY METER” WAS INTRODUCED every 15 minutes an update is sent to your energy provider.On September 21th 2009 , every man, woman and child(12y/o) will have to give their fingerprints when applying for a passport or id-card (mandatory)

I wonder if we will be required to have this per mile tax if you own or drive an electric car? I know they say it is to “Replace” the fuel tax MY ASS) but when they consider how much will be lost when they “Replace” it they will inevitably stick with both. Looks like it’s time to buy a bicycle.

ofcourse they will tax electric cars.. DOH, the fuel tax is used to maintain roads right?… we’ll just call it the roadtax then }:) (thats what they call it here in holland). Because even electric cars will bring a load to the road :S

They’ll just find a way to tax you while you use your bicycle. There’s one woman here in America that transformed her bicycle so that she could take three of her small children where ever they needed to go. Mark my word, bikes will get a mile tax (or other tax of some sort), and have to be licensed. Their excuse, “they use the roads too.”

Dave: Some clarification: I think the Netherlands is a great country.
The people are down to earth and matter-of-fact and love to have a good time. I have dutch friends and they are exceptional people (minus the two scamming social services). What I don’t understand is how they can allow their lives to be smothered by so many regulations. In fact not one Dutch person I asked is proud of all the regulation…they loathe them. So again, why allow such things?
I mean there is a big difference from being tolerant, and getting walked over.

yeah well, i used to agree with you.i was proud of holland, well.. i was cereinly was not ashamed of my country. That all quickly vanished when i woke up from lalaland in 2006, i soon started noticing the corruption and foul manipulation within the dutch governmental aparatus. The aid to USA in the iraq war, afghanistan where whe’re still! for so called “rebuilding” yea right…
Not to mention the friggin EU constitution that was rammed up our arses…
The fact that most people i talk to, and try to convince them to renew their passport before sept. 21e 2009 (when vingerprints in passport will be mandatory); the general answer is: well.. i have nothing to hide ..
Its that insincere cowardly naive thinking thats realy at the base of our so called tolerance.
Tolerance in the sence how we dutchmen are often caracterised, is just the failure to have balls, and telling the “other” they are pissing you off !
