Newt Gingrich, a Republican presidential candidate who has positioned himself as a fiscal hawk and budget reformer, posted a $1.03 million campaign debt in reports released Friday.
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney posted the healthiest campaign bank account with $12.7 million, but he fell short of his $50 million fundraising goal for the first half of the year.
The large gap between Romney and his rivals suggests many Republican donors are waiting on the sidelines, watching the topsy-turvy early campaign as the candidates start to engage one another, political operatives said.
