It doesn’t mean “everything just warms up a little.” It means more violent weather, more extremes in weather — colder as well as hotter — and widespread changes in weather patterns, which leads to failures of species that are adapted to a particular climate, like the crops that humans live on, and proliferation of the fast adapters, like insects (and the diseases they carry).

There is no, zero, not even remotely, a question that the polar ice is melting, and the seas are rising. Worse, it’s a feedback effect. Ice reflects heat. Water absorbs it. The less ice and more water, the faster the temperature rises, which means even less ice, which means more water…. And an awful lot of people live within a few feet of the waterline, like, oh, the entire south and east coasts, and more than a little of the west coast.

“Global warming” is a catch phrase, a sound bite. The correct term is “global climate change.” Considering that the tipping point, the “precipice,” was passed over a decade ago when the glaciers started falling apart, the term is more accurately “global climate disaster.”
