Google CEO: We Need Gov’t Regulation of Internet Service Providers

Google CEO Eric Schmidt says government regulation of Internet service providers (ISPs) is necessary. In fact, he said he thinks the entire concept of the Internet marketplace relies on it.
Schmidt spoke to conservative bloggers at the Republican National Convention on September 3 in St. Paul, Minn. He warned that if an Internet service provider were too large, it could use its size to create a “protected structure within the Internet” and suggested that would restrict competition – giving some content favorable treatment within its network.
“Let’s imagine the following scenario – who’s the largest Internet provider in the United States today, numerically? Let’s pick Comcast – whoever is the largest,” Schmidt said. “And let’s imagine that they were 80 percent of the market. They would be able to start to do proprietary extensions of protocols and they could eventually use a withholding of information to create a protected substructure within the Internet.”

He reflected on Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) as example of how that could happen. Schmidt’s comments about Microsoft come in the wake of Google’s launch of its own browser, Chrome – meant to compete with the newly launched versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox.
“Now you have to decide if you think that’s an okay outcome,” Schmidt said. “The Internet was based on the principle that that could not happen. You all know and this may also be controversial with this group – I’ve spent 25 years … with Microsoft, which has of course a very large platform market share – who did those kinds of techniques. We can debate whether they were correct or not, but where you come out on that often I think predicts your view on this.”
Opponents of Schmidt’s point of view argue such corporate control hasn’t occurred, and therefore the government should remain hands-off. However, Schmidt argued it is still necessary and justified for the government to intervene just in case a company was able to “get that level of control” over the Internet.
“So the issue is not – there’s no current behavior,” Schmidt said. “So Comcast for example, is not doing the scenario I’m describing. But you worry that when any company – including Google by the way – gets that level of control over something, it can do proprietary extensions. They can make it impossible for competition to occur.”
Last month, FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell warned that government involvement with ISPs and their networks could have a chilling effect and could even mean the possibility of an expansion of the Fairness Doctrine to the Internet.

So in other words, its just like what the global elite have done to the people here on Earth, they’ve “made it impossible for competition to occur”. Only, the global elite think that if they were smart enough to eliminate the competition, then they have a right to monopolize all of the world’s resources.
So which philosophy is the right one then? A world where even the weak get to compete equally, or a world where only the most powerful have the privelege of competing? If you choose the latter, then eugenics programs are an unfair and unnatural tool of the elite to destroy their potential competion.

The problem is actually government regulation, e.g. government granted monopolies. Comcast and other “last mile” communications providors have government (local, state, and federal) granted monopolies. They are already well regulated. Regulation concentrates power over a market into the hands of government regulators. It then is far easier to win the favor of regulators and legislaters than to compete in the open market and win the favor of customers. The only reason I’m still with Comcast today is sad fact, in the “land of the free”, there is no other internet provider with >1mbit speed to where I live (DSL is >500kb here) and I live in Seattle. Even if Eric Schmidt is right about “net neutrality” and all, if his goal is increased competition he ought to learn more about the origin of monopolies (e.g. government fiat) and focusing his energies on opening up the “last mile” in the United States to *real* unregulated competition. I want fiber to my house for $50 a month damn it!

The USA government spies on Internet users that is a fact of life. The number of people who have been arrested for downloading ‘child porn’ has gone up. How does the government know that who is doing that unless it has been sanctioned to spy on private citizens. A person’s privacy is no longer assured. He could be downloading the Communist Manifesto or what the socialist ideology and still be arrested. Or by chance open a website regarding where all the CIA agents are located, what their real names are and where they live – that would be grounds for arrest. ISPs are the ones providing this information to the government. There is no security, no secrecy – broadband has made it much easier to nab anyone considered a threat to society.
This the Orwellian state in which eveyone spies on everyone no is safe and torture and imprisonment without trial has become a way of life.

What he was really describing is exactly what AOL did when it created it’s limited proxy-server network effectively offering timely Internet access only to sites it determined worthy, and requiring it’s victims to use a non-standard, non exportable proprietary email system. Unfortunately the market killed the bandwidth-stingy stale page nonsense they ended up trying to sell but they still do use this evil non standard email tyranny.
We saw how their once growing empire has withered, but he has a point that any corporate Nazi or a select noble elite group of them could easily trap American’s in a web-propaganda ghetto like the people of China have.
