The ruling comes as part of Google’s legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.
Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called the ruling a “set-back to privacy rights”.
The viewing log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video clip details.
While the legal battle between the two firms is being contested in the US, it is thought the ruling will apply to YouTube users and their viewing habits everywhere.
Viacom, which owns MTV and Paramount Pictures, has alleged that YouTube is guilty of massive copyright infringement.
The UK’s Premier League association is also seeking class action status with Viacom on the issue, alleging YouTube, which was bought by Google in 2006, has been used to watch football highlights.

I guess this means if you’ve ever even watched a copyrighted video on YouTube, you’re going to prison for a maximum penalty of 5 years per copyrighted video watched. Viewing a copyrighted video without permission is now a federal copyright crime.

This is proof of what i have suspected all along.
Governments are terrified of the web.
My god freedom of expression and communication of ideas is Big Brothers nightmare.
Are people really the frog in the proverbial water that slowly heats and kills it?,we slowly lose small amounts of freedom until we realise too late that we have none left.
Keep the masses drunk on sport, religion, entertainment and consumerism.Keep them distracted so they dont notice what is happening, dumb them down so much so they wouldnt notice anyway. In the 1980;s i read the book None dare call it conspiracy by the author Gary Allen,i forgot it thru the late 80;s and 90;s but since 9/11 i am concerned that there really is a plan to control the masses, they really do have technology to instigate this plan.I do not believe in conspiracy theories, that implies no proof and asks you to have faith (like religion)i KNOW there is a conspiracy because if you research you will find PROOF.

Why don’t they go after public libraries?
Thats where i get all my media.
DVD’S, CD’s, Games,Music etc.
The a$$ holes won’t EVER go after libraries because they are government funded that’s why.
They are immune to RIAA,sony and others.
Get a library card people !!!!!!!! it’s the last frontier of free media.

RXppZ2h0:
Nice try, but with the now several years old Patriot Act(s), FBI can obtain all records of media borrowed from libraries….nowhere is safe from prying govt. anymore.

That’s what alll the FEEMA concentration camps are for – they’re going to ship all you illegal youtube users off there to stop the truth from getting out (even more). Good Job I live on a desert island – phew!

Wow….now if you are a witness, you are part of the crime….
consider this, Google’s evidence is also a violation as they have allowed it to happen on their servers, on their hard drives, and have kept records of their involvement… all the while it is the viewers who are are witnesses to that extent….

They come with this now?…youtube has been around for ages, oohhh yea someone at viacom must have been bored, by the time that they have looked through the list, the list would have grown twice the size and then they would have to look at that one etc etc.
And what then give everybody a fine? lock them up? send then to bed without dinner?what? i like the way that BIG companies think they can throw they wait around, and they spend money and money to scare people off, but the answer to that is simple, let them prove that I was behind the computer and not someone else, otherwise i will not even take notice of them, i did not sign anything with them,i never met them etc etc, i don’t like being bullied by people i don’t know or even the ones i do know.
i live with this thought : ( you can change it to any situation )
What if everybody was taken to court BUT we didn’t show up? what then?
Enjoy life and be free.

You have got to be f***ing kidding me. I dont even have the words to explain how ridiculous, and scary this is. I havent watched youtube much recently. But the implications are scary.
July 4th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Yeah, this is so dumb. In fact, you tube has actually brought more attention to their properties like MTV, or sports or Viacom shows then regular television has. However, I guess there are no limits to greed.
I think that its about time that people realize that it is not okay to just petition govt., but to petition (and take action) against the corporations that support unjust policies.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:34 am
people that are mad about this should flood YOUTUBE about how corrupt Viacom is.
July 6th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Silly Heads, there is no advertising like free advertising. Think of all the bandwidth those videos took up. That is not cheap. Viacom should be happy someone carried their footage without sending them a bill.
