Google Says Privacy Doesn’t Exist, Get Used To Everyone Knowing Everything About You

The headline practically says it all. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is being sued by a Pittsburgh couple for posting images of its house on the Internet in Google’s Street Views pages. Google responded, in court no less, that complete privacy simply doesn’t exist in today’s world and the couple should stop crying about it.
Google may be right, in theory. It said in papers filed with the court, “Today’s satellite image technology means that even in today’s desert, complete privacy does not exist.” That’s partially true. With satellites, cameras and other monitoring devices all being tied together by the Internet, it is becoming more and more difficult to completely isolate yourself from view.
But does that mean our privacy should be violated by large corporations looking to provide better mapping software? Shouldn’t there be some boundaries that aren’t trampled in the name of a better product? Google said in the court papers that that doesn’t matter, and implied the idea of privacy is somewhat faulted.

The “Plaintiffs live in the 21st century United States, where every step upon private property is not deemed by law to be an actionable trespass. Unless there is a clear expression such as a gate, fence, or ‘keep out’ sign indicating that the public is not permitted to enter, anyone may approach a home by a walkway, driveway, or any other route commonly used by visitors, without liability for trespass.” Google says the Pittsburgh couple in question had no such signs, and therefore should not have any expectation for privacy.
I can see Google’s point here, but for Google to come out and say that privacy doesn’t exist is not a great publicity move for the company.

Street view is great (yes, my house is on it)! I’ve been able to see the first house that I ever lived in, my grandmother’s old house, my first grade school, and many more places without spending a dime or dealing with the nightmares that are called airports. There’s nothing on there that anyone couldn’t see while driving by. This is simply NOT anything to get one’s ass in a knot over.

That is SUCH bullshit…and too..COMPLETELY FALSE…I have taken MUCH effort to protect myself from sattelite imagery…unless you live on a tree-less street you can protect yurself..in fact..googl may have chosen that image BECAUSE it was ‘Exposed” in which cae the “CHOICE” of imagery is the question..does a Corporate entity..or ANYONE..have the right to simply “LOOK AT YOUR LIFE” because…quite simply..you do not have ENOUGH “cover” or “Privacy” shielding in whatever form it takes?
Yeah..WE DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY! ABSOLUTELY! THE RIGHT TO ANONYMITY? PERHAPS NOT?
Here is MY challenge…go ahead..LOOK FOR MY HOME..if you like..YOU WILL NOT SEE IT…Unless you have access to something I have never heard of…”Googles new…In your front yard pics..” or the like…barring that..and using the Google Earth or other..GO FOR IT!
I live at Mile Marker 32 on HWY36 in Northern California..6 miles EAST of Bridgeville California…go for it..look..see if you can find my 1800 sq/ft home..story and a half..you will see my driveway…but you are not going to see my HOME, my YARD..unless you call 40 acres a yard..which I guess you could…but seriously..i have privacy..it has required SOME anxiety rgarding tree cover..in Cal..right now..especially..but SO WHAT..and that is ANOTHER story…hw the INSURANCE companies inCal ar doing EVERYTHING they can to make your Rural Home COMPLETELY EXPOSED TO…AERIAL SURVIELLANCE USING “FIRE” AS AN EXCUSE…AND I AINT TALKING ABOUT ONE OR TWO TREES RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR HOUSE…I AM TALKING ABOUT ALMOST DEFORESTATION..100′S OF FEET OF EXPOSURE…AND THE REALITY IS THAT ALELEOPATHIC NATURE OF SOME TREES..LIKE DOUG FIR…KEEPS GROUND COVER MINIMALIZED…AND IF KPT IN ORDER THE TREES ARE ACTUALLY SAFER THAN NOT HAVING THEM…I HAVE EVEN THOUGHT THAT “CLEARCUTTING” MAY HAVE A SECOND AGENDA..TO “GRID’ THE DEEP FORESTS IN AMERICA INTO CHESS BOARDS…MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO TRAVERSE THE FORESTS WITHOUT BEING AT SOME POINT EXPOSED..ESPECIALLY A ‘COLUMN’ OR THE LIKE…THE REBELLION WILL HAVE TO TAKE LONG CIRCUITOUS ROUTES..WASTE TIME AND ENERGY AND MATERIEL…MAYBE?

You think thay are usung satilites that google made… no there using old government satilites that they don’t use anymore once they got all the use they needed out of them, they sold them to the highest bidder.. Ecto, you bring up very valid points, and I agree with what you’re saying except I couldn’t care less if someone takes a picture of my house. The other points that you raised are far, far more serious; I worry about these things too, but I don’t think that there’s a lot that anyone can do at the present time. Maybe when we finally get rid of junior and dickhead the people can make serious changes, but who knows? Those two are certainly not the only Nazis in our government, and I don’t trust ANY politician to do the right thing. I hear that Belize is nice…

Anyone else notice a difference here? The author quotes the statement made by Google in the court documents, that is “complete privacy”. Then he goes on to misinterpret and (more importantly) misinform his readers using only “privacy”. It’s just another subjective (as usual) report which doesn’t do justice to its readers.

Complete privacy doesn’t exist so, therefore, no privacy exists? The are Begging the Question: there is no such thing as privacy so we cannot possibly be invading it.
Common Practice fallacy: it’s common practice for satellites to invade privacy so it’s okay for Google to do it too.
Red Herring: what do satellites supposedly controlled with strict oversight have to do with unfettered corporate greed profiting from images they have no copyright to use?
What’s next? We’re not doing evil because everyone else is doing it too?

So you live in a big city and you like to burgle houses and steal cars.
So you go on the G and spend an afternoon carefully scanning and mapping the city for the cars you like or the houses that look the most defenseless using the Maps to have multiple safe routes away from the crime.

It kind of sucks but it’s true. It is actually good for us, because it might set a president, So next time I get pulled over I will turn on my video camera linked to my cell phone thats linked to the internet, and when the Officer tells me to turn it off, I’m going to tell him to FUCK OFF, he nor I have any expectation of privacy.

Hmmm, as I scan through my own city using google earth, it seems some people DO in fact have privacy,.. the ones in gated communities.
I doubt there is a street view of any of the houses of the ceo’s of google.

It has been said that power corrupts. Even a teenage manager at a fast food place with their first car, is enough to have a power trip over others they manage. It gets worse with more money and power. There is only a small percentage of people with good values who can be counted on to be honest and fair in the position of power, no matter how much or little. As long as real values aren’t as important as power and money to these people, they will continue to play their power trip.
Too many people in the police force and other security related fields are cowards and have no value system in place. We have no choice but to expose them and fight back anyway we can. However we must have our own value system so we don’t become like them and be able to differentiate between good and evil as they are not all evil.
