In response to NPN’s recent urgent pleas for hate bill protest, Senate offices today report “hundreds” of calls critical of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, S. 909. This contrasts sharply with yesterday when pro-hate bill calls, primarily generated by the homosexual Human Rights Campaign, outnumbered those of Christians/conservatives. On Tuesday one Senate office reported less than 15 calls against the hate bill by early afternoon. Today, however, Republican offices said pro-hate bill calls were only a small minority.
Many calls of protest are coming from the religious right. Within the last day almost all evangelical watchdog groups have sprung into action, with bold alerts and encouragements. At last, they join NPN in instructing their audiences not just to fax, email, or sign online petitions but to do as Rep. Steve King told us months ago: Actually call Senators. In fact, Focus on the Family and Family Research Council, which last Thursday encouraged America to give up hate bill resistance, are now urging their listeners to phone Washington!
Acute Hate Bill Danger Remains
Yet, despite this encouraging trend, the hate bill remains very much alive! Throughout Wednesday pro-hate bill Democrats, including Sens. Levin, Durbin, Feinstein, and Cardin argued passionately for passage of S. 909. The top issue of contention remains the inappropriateness of attaching the hate bill, protecting homosexuals but not soldiers, to the arms bill, providing security for America and her troops. This criticism, with which NPN-inspired callers have saturated the Senate over the past two weeks, remains a very potent weapon against the hate bill.

The hate bill will remain a hot issue Thursday with a push by Democrats to move it forward as quickly as possible. Protest must continue loud and strong!
Our best political hope right now is to continue to swamp the Senate. The more calls that come in against the hate bill, the more likely a few Democrats and liberal Republicans will be to defect from hate bill ranks. They will weigh the possibility of losing re-election against staying in good graces with liberal Senate leadership. If only five or six opt for their future political security and break ranks, it means hate bill defeat.

Do what I did. After reading this artical, I picked up my phone and call my senators in Maryland. I told them to reject this hate crime bill S. 909 or they will not have my vote in the next election. Then I emailed everyone on my contact list and encourage them to call their, I use this term loosely,respective senators and demand they reject the hate crime bill or else lose their highly prized seat in the senate.

It is sad that the bill must be attached to the military package, but Republicans left no other avenue. Through procedural hanky-panky the Republicans have prevented the Hate Crimes bill from standing on its own. That is where the travisty resides!
If Mat had only to suffer taunting there would be little need, but having been submitted to murders, to murder BECAUSE Mat was gay, that is where the need is. Physical violance, not speech or thought is what is targeted in this bill.
Be a person of honor and morality and support this bill! After all there IS someone you know and love who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed.

If they want to push their lifestyle in the face of wholesome America, then they do need their ass beat They shouldn’t be allowed to go trying to “turn a man out” as they say! They are disgusting the way they have their parades and run around gropping and humping one another in front of small children. They run around naked in front of children and if anyone doubts this, look up pictures from their many parades and activities. Even the children of gay people shouldn’t see this. Read up on the disease statistics these people have too.
This bill gives a foot in the door for our nation to become just like every other country where they can’t even refer to someone as a homosexual wthout gong to jail. This happened in Germany.

try reading the 14th amendment before you support laws that favor one group over others.The laws are meant for all not just a certain group….also why was it that no media coverage reported on the rape and death of a boy by homosexuals a few weeks after the Shepard murder?Only deaths of Gays is the media,s agenda…fair and balanced?

Still not against gays, just the ones that are assholes. And I am definitely against any bill which legislates censorship of any kind. Free speech is a combat zone, if you can’t hang get the fuck out. I don’t care about a few (and I am talking a very few cases) people who get killed because we have free speech. I am more concerned with the multitudes that will be killed if free speech is killed. For that is one of hte final steps in any totaltarian society. Fuck Matt Shepard. Not because he was gay. Wow. Every day I get more and more disillusioned. I fight and I fight to protect this country and I see something even worse coming out of that fight. What began as an attempt to take back the country and restore the constitution based government we were supposed to have has been so thoroughly hijacked by the religious wrong that I almost want to stop.
I’m not working to make this a “christian nation”. I don’t want to be thrown in with you people espousing who’s ok and who isn’t based on your book and not on actually knowing any of these people. We’re all human beings and should accept each other as is. Christ told you to, so where do you get off deciding you’re allowed to judge ANYONE? If any of you were actual christians, ACTUAL CHRISTIANS, you’d realize that judgment is dealt in the afterlife. If you really think they’re wrong and they’re immoral, then love them anyway as Christ asked and know that they’ll be cast into hell for their choices. It’s not your job to change their hearts or minds or to vilify of condemn them yourselves.
As a nonbeliever I don’t particularly care what you think of me. I’ll continue to live a morally virtuous life for the sake of enjoying this life. I don’t remotely believe that there is any fancy magic kingdom waiting for me when I die so I intend to be the best person I can be while I’m still alive. It’s this belief that this is only a stepping stone to your real existences that somehow helps you justify your actions, but if any of you actually understood the book you claim to love so much you’d realize you’re all sending yourselves to the “hell” you fear so much.
In any case, down with the hate bill – simply because it limits freedom, not because it protects homosexuals.

What you say is true. But, have you noticed that Jesus didn’t bother anyone who wasn’t interested (His message was so good people came to Him!) and didn’t seek to impose anything on anyone? I don’t see anything in your statement to indicate you are for imposing anything on others but that is the fear of many. We all have different ideas/interpretations of what God is about. I sure wouldn’t want others trying to put their idea of God as law for me. I am offended daily by things people say about God. And I’m not against speaking out in truth… Yet it is a fine line we have to walk because we too are not give offense to others. If I ever figure out how to do that perfectly I’ll get back with you on it!

Please do NOT vote for the federal hate crimes bill, S. 909. On Oct. 8, 2004, 11 Christians were arrested and jailed for 21 hours under Pennsylvania’s anti-hate law. They had been peacefully preaching at a “Gay Pride” parade.
While “Anti-Hate” legislation gives the impression of protecting the civil rights of minorities from bias-motivated violence or intimidation, it actually leads to loss of free speech.
Under Canada’s anti-hate law, it is now illegal to criticize homosexual behavior over the airwaves, in print, or in public. The consequences: large fines and imprisonment.
The FBI’s annual “Uniform Crime Report” consistently shows that so-called “hate crimes” constitute only about 1/15th of 1% of all crime in America. Of this 1/15th of 1%, most have not been adjudicated but are called “crime” because of the conclusions of investigating police. Actually, most are “suspected bias crimes incidents,” not proven crimes.
Such infinitesimal numbers of proven hate crimes does not justify unprecedented, massive intrusion of the federal government into local law enforcement.

Although I am not a Christian I think it’s blatantly obvious this bill is targeting certain peoples and protecting others…which do not have anything to do with the equality I fought for in Iraq. It seems this bill is also not going to protect soldiers or Vets like myself who are attacked such as the Muslim who attacked and killed Pvt. when I started hearing about hate crimes, my antenna went up. Murder is still illegal, unless you are Dick Cheney, so why would it matter if you hated someone you murdered? Hated someone you assulted, hated someone you robbed, hated someone you raped? There are laws aplenty against murder, rape, assault and robbery. What’s next, “dislike crimes”? You know where someone didn’t hate someone, they just disliked them when they beat them up. It’s just as ridiculous as “hate crimes” laws. Congress makes too many laws, all the laws we needed, we got in the constitution.

The Matthew Shepard Act (officially, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act or LLEHCPA), is a proposed bill in the United States Congress that would expand the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.
The bill would also:
remove the current prerequisite that the victim be engaging in a federally-protected activity, like voting or going to school; give federal authorities greater ability to engage in hate crimes investigations that local authorities choose not to pursue; provide $10 million in funding for 2008 and 2009 to help state and local agencies pay for investigating and prosecuting hate crimes;
require the FBI to track statistics on hate crimes against transgender people (statistics for the other groups are already tracked).
The 1969 federal hate-crime law (18 U.S.C. § 245(b)(2)) extends only to crimes motivated by actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin, and only while the victim is engaging in a federally-protected activity, like voting or going to school. Penalties, under both the existing law and the LLEHCPA, for hate crimes involving firearms are prison terms of up to 10 years, while crimes involving kidnapping, sexual assault, or murder can bring life in prison.
According to FBI statistics, of the over 113,000 hate crimes since 1991, 55% were motivated by racial bias, 17% by religious bias, 14% sexual orientation bias, 14% ethnicity bias, and 1% disability bias.
The Act is supported by thirty-one state Attorneys General and over 210 national law enforcement, professional, education, civil rights, religious, and civic organizations, including the AFL-CIO, the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the NAACP. A November 2001 poll indicated that 73% of Americans favor hate-crime legislation covering sexual orientation.
The LLEHCPA was introduced in substantially similar form in each Congress since the 105th Congress in 1999. The 2007 bill expands on the earlier versions (originally called the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act) by including transgender provisions and making it explicit that the law should not be interpreted to restrict people’s freedom of speech or association.

And by the way, the act covers crimes motivated by religion. So please all you holly roller, self riteous hypocrits, where is your outrage about THAT? If you read my previous post (which I’m sure you didn’t) you’ll see that there were more religiously hate crimes than there were for sexual orientation. If you argued against the hate crimes legislation, based on it’s provision covering religious hate crimes, you might be able to claim a little credibility.

I’m not religious at all. I don’t believe religions have anything to do with God. Nor do I believe this bill has any right to be passed in this country. It places one group over another as far as severity of crimes commited against goes. That is a far cry from freedom. Fuck the Matt Shepard law.

Last week I emailed both of my US Senators (both of which I am so sadly certain will be reeleced, what with the zionist media adoring them) telling them about my hate for the hate crimes bill, but promise to telephone their offices before the day ends.

Cardin, yup that is my senator. Realize my state, Maryland, has a large minority population that is very liberal. So anything uncle Ben can do to pimp up more votes to keep him in office by selling out the nation. Yes he can! The first thing Ben put our upon entry into office was race bating. That is all this guy knows, he is old school.
Cardin also voted yes to the bail out
Cardin also wants to vote yes to cap and trade
And many will vote this guy back year after year
