  • Health: Soya-based foods may harm male fertility, say scientists

     Ian Sample,
    London Guardian
    Thursday, July 24, 2008

Men who eat soya-based foods may be harming their fertility, doctors said yesterday, after a study found a link between soya-rich diets and lower sperm counts.

The study showed men who consumed more than two portions of soya-based foods a week had, on average, 41m fewer sperm per millilitre of semen than men who had never eaten soya products.

The apparent fall in sperm count is unlikely to make healthy men infertile, but some experts said it could have a significant impact on those already with lower than average sperm counts. A sperm count of between 80m and 120m per ml is regarded as normal, while men who produce fewer than 20m sperm per ml are regarded as clinically subfertile.

The study, by Jorge Chavarro at Harvard school of public health in Boston, builds on previous research in animals and on human tissues that has suggested certain ingredients in soya could harm sperm production.

Male fertility has been in decline in the west for several decades, with about 20% of young Europeans having a low sperm count, while levels of soya have risen steadily in the western diet since the 1940s because it is a cheap source of protein. Soya-based products are now found in two-thirds of manufactured food including biscuits, sweets, pasta and bread, according to the Institute of Food Research in Norwich.

    1. manbearpig Says:

Interesting – I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 20 years now – I have 3 children between 4-11 years of age – and well, I never had that sort of trouble despite the fact that I’ve had my fair share of soya-based foods. Also – since in Asia they eat quite a lot of soya too, people over there oughta have some serious fertility problems, not?

Ps. I hate these so called “scientific studies” that don’t make any difference let alone sense of any kind…

    2. marco-australia Says:

nothing new about this – bodybuilders have known this for a long time

    3. Ron Says:

I agree with ‘manbearpig’; if soya is so bad, how come there are more Asians in the world than anyone else?

Of course, too much of anything is no good for you.

    4. JEH Says:

Try to find food in the stores that does not have some form of soybeans. Even wheat bread is full of soybeans.
People that hate scientific studies don’t seem to have any problem with them, as long as they agree with corporate propaganda.

    5. manbearpig Says:

marco – bodybuilders tend to use additional “performance enhancing” substances that are not soya-based. And trust me – it’s not soya that make their testicles “go peanuts”… ;)

    6. manbearpig Says:

JEH – I make my own bread as it really ain’t that difficult – and well, if “wheat bread full of soybeans” really is a problem maybe you should make your own bread as well. But you better watch out not to use too much of dihydrogen monoxide in your foods either as many consider it to be a “dangerous substance” as well:

      Dihydrogen monoxide:

is called “hydroxyl acid”, the substance is the major component of acid rain.
      contributes to the “greenhouse effect”.
      may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
      in nuclear power plants.
      in the production of styrofoam.
      as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain “junk-foods” and other food products.

    8. mar Says:

ohhhhh, scary…a drop in male fertility, oh now that’s something the world needs to be afraid of…Has it dawned on any of you breeders yet that there are tooooooooooooo many of us now, who gives a rat ass if ‘male fertility’ is harmed by soy? What is it with people who joyously breed themselves into starvation? Call birth a miracle…pat each other on the back, “oh a wonder little bundle of joy…and in two years they are beating the hell out of little Johnny…Susie.” Screwballs! Rats give birth too, do you call that ‘a miracle’? It a simple biological process…flies to it too. A drop in reproduction is what is needed, but which of these animals can control themselves? The rats? The flies? The humans? The least of all the humans…’Male fertility’ – Humans…what a stupid lot…sorry I’m one too. Where’s ET, I want out of here! I want away from you morons – (You are a disgrace to your creator,…not that there is one). Made in god’s image…you mean Stupid, Servile and vile? Those who do the god thing are the most likely to be of this type…why is that?

(for those of you who don’t fit this discription- you know who you are (all 100 of you).

    9. manbearpig Says:

Mar: “Has it dawned on any of you breeders yet that there are tooooooooooooo many of us now…”

You’re absolutely right – there are too many of you – conditioned malthusian type personalities who obviously missed something while growing up… and by the way – I missed that something too, but I’m aware of it, which again makes it easier to handle.

Anyway – as “Mar” here demonstrates, it’s really all about us being “too many” – and the fact that people start having problems with fertility must be good news as such – and indeed, the news is about us being “too many” – lot of us are already conditioned this way – and it really doesn’t matter if it’s the soybeans and not the vaccines, amalgam fillings, artificial food-additivies or chemtrails or whatever – it’s just that “there are too many of us” and any news like this must be good news for us all.

So, don’t think, but react – and they have the solution waiting for you…

Ps. who ever mentioned anything about “birth being a miracle” let alone god?

    10. MasterAndCommander Says:

Mar: Overpopulation is a myth. You could take every man, woman, and child in the world, give them all a modest sized house with standard front and back yard and all those dwellings would fit in the state of Texas.

Actually, the number of people in the world is not the issue–it is the level of goodness and virtue of all the people in the world that really matters. If everyone loves and respects each other and looks out for each other, you have the paradigm for a perfect society. On the other hand, a poorly populated region with violent, selfish, hateful people will make that little garden of Eden into a hell on earth.

Truth is, there are not too many people in the world–there are too many SELFISH people in the world!

    11. nan Says:

that article is soooooooooooooooooooooo fun ny. Wow Asia is full of people and they eat plenty of soy. This is just some way to get people to go back to eating flesh. It’s not going to work so forget it dude lol
