Holder says he’s a ‘proxy’ for GOP attacks against Obama

In his first interview since Congress voted to hold him in contempt, Attorney General Eric Holder said the GOP was using him as an election-year “proxy” to go after President Obama.

“I’ve become a symbol of what they don’t like about the positions this Justice Department has taken,” Holder told The Washington Post on Monday. “I am also a proxy for the president in an election year. You have to be exceedingly naive to think that vote was about … documents.”

The House voted to place Holder in contempt after he refused to hand over documents demanded by Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who led the effort to find him in contempt. Despite the pressure, Holder said he’s been able to lead Justice as it has worked to increase voter rights and thwart terrorist plots.

“I’ve been doing all of these things all the time Darrell Issa and his band have been nipping at my heels,” Holder said. “They’ve been nipping, but I’ve been walking.
