China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest economy, figures released today show.
The statistics underscore China’s emergence as an economic power that is changing everything from the global balance of military and financial power to how cars are designed.
It is already the biggest exporter, auto buyer and steel producer, and its global influence is expanding.
But America remains far and away the world’s number one economy – for now.
China’s GDP for the second quarter of 2010 stood at $1.337trillion today, more than Japan’s $1.288 trillion. America’s annual GDP is $14trillion.
