How Safe Is Your Safe-Deposit Box?

The 50 U.S. states are holding more than $32 billion worth of unclaimed property that they’re supposed to safeguard for their citizens. But a “Good Morning America” investigation found some states aggressively seize property that isn’t really unclaimed and then use the money — your money — to balance their budgets.
Unclaimed property consists of things like forgotten apartment security deposits, uncashed dividend checks and safe-deposit boxes abandoned when an elderly relative dies.
Banks and other businesses are required to turn that property over to the state for safekeeping. The problem is that the states return less than a quarter of unclaimed property to the rightful owners.
Not-So-Safe-Deposit Boxes
San Francisco resident Carla Ruff’s safe-deposit box was drilled, seized, and turned over to the state of California, marked “owner unknown.”

“I was appalled,” Ruff said. “I felt violated.”
Unknown? Carla’s name was right on documents in the box at the Noe Valley Bank of America location. So was her address — a house about six blocks from the bank. Carla had a checking account at the bank, too — still does — and receives regular statements. Plus, she has receipts showing she’s the kind of person who paid her box rental fee. And yet, she says nobody ever notified her.
“They are zealously uncovering accounts that are not unclaimed,” Ruff said.
To make matters worse, Ruff discovered the loss when she went to her box to retrieve important paperwork she needed because her husband was dying. Those papers had been shredded.

Only the uninformed, usually older, people, would trust a “safety deposit box”. Safer to bury something in your backyard. ESPECIALLY if you own any precious metals!! Those boxes are routinly siezed, or frozen, innapropriatly. Invest in a good safe. They are cheap, if hard to move. But hide them, because a safe can be conspiquous. And easily opened, under threat.

EXACTLY. I have encouraged ALL of my clients to remove everything from bank custody – safe deposit boxes, CDs, MM Funds, the whole enchilada.

State of California tried to seize my savings because my account had been idle for a year. BofA did send me a warning letter, fortunately.

It may take a couple of years for bank regulators or whom ever to notify you of that.

The saga of bank buyouts and rip-offs continues. I am warning everyone out there if you have a safe deposit box and your bank has been seized/bought out ******IMMEDIATELY GO TO YOUR SAFE DEPOSIT BOX AND CLAIM ALL OF ITS CONTENTS.****** The contents of your box will be seized and the bank will not take any responsibility for your loss. How do I know this , it has happened to me and many others. I opened my account –safe deposit box in 1991 the bank was bought out by Wachovia who had all the contents and boxes moved to another location. I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT MY BOX WAS RAIDED BY EITHER BANK EMPLOYEES/AND OR THE COMPANY HIRED TO MOVE THE CONTENTS OR BOTH. They refuse to compensate me or acknowledge that a CRIME was committed. After all they are use to stealing the blood sweat and labor of the country for their profits
