Five thousand tourists were told to leave a North Carolina island as Hurricane Earl threatened to hit the US east coast.
Visitors to Ocracoke Island were given the order but 800 residents could stay, officials said.
‘I don’t remember the last time there was a mandatory evacuation order,’ said Kenneth Collier, Hyde county commissioner.
