In Connecticut, Obama says he’s ‘determined as ever’ for gun bill

President Barack Obama came to the University of Hartford Monday and told a crowd of supporters that Congress is only going to vote to support gun reforms if it hears from citizens demanding these changes.

With lawmakers back in Washington next week, the president has been traveling the country praising states that have already taken up the cause and offering hope that in the end “cooperation and common sense will prevail” and new federal rules will be put in place.

The president came to Newtown shortly after the slaying of 20 children and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 by a lone gunman wielding an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. He promised at the time to fight for a renewed assault weapons ban, limits on magazines and a universal background check, but the agenda in Washington is shrinking.

Obama was introduced Monday by Nicole Hockley, a parent of Dylan Hockley, one of the children killed that day.
