If they're making all these preparations, especially the construction of make-shift jails, they're probably itching to use them. It's not that these methods affect the conscience of the aggressors by starkly pointing out to them their own inhumanity, which is what such advocates believe. What really happens is that the abuse of the peaceful demonstrators is observed by outsiders who become outraged and are thus drawn into the conflict to defend the "defenseless" WITH VIOLENCE. In other words, peaceful activism only works because it PISSES PEOPLE OFF. When these pissed off people begin to mobilize it induces fear in the oppressors, and that's when the concessions begin. Obviously, this is NOT an initiation of violence, which should always be discouraged. This is defensive violence and all responsibility rests with ones who made it necessary.
