  • Internet flaw could let hackers take over the Web

Computer industry heavyweights are hustling to fix a flaw in the foundation of the Internet that would let hackers control traffic on the World Wide Web.

Major software and hardware makers worked in secret for months to create a software “patch” released on Tuesday to repair the problem, which is in the way computers are routed to web page addresses.

“It’s a very fundamental issue with how the entire addressing scheme of the Internet works,” Securosis analyst Rich Mogul said in a media conference call.

    (Article continues below)

“You’d have the Internet, but it wouldn’t be the Internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything.”

The flaw would be a boon for “phishing” cons that involve leading people to imitation web pages of businesses such as bank or credit card companies to trick them into disclosing account numbers, passwords and other information.

Attackers could use the vulnerability to route Internet users wherever they wanted no matter what website address is typed into a web browser.

this is a non-story. it’s a bug in the DNS software. you can merely do a check on securityfocus or bugtraq

this is a non-story. it’s a bug in the DNS software. you can merely do a check on securityfocus or bugtraq. it’s open-source software, people. anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of C/C++ could figure out what had happened.

the internet has bugs. all software created by humans do. the internet2 doesn’t make monitoring any easier or harder than on this TCP/IP v4-based internet. in fact, college students on I2 have been enjoying much more anonymity, as the MPAA/RIAA have difficulty monitoring traffic on I2 servers.

many hackers do work for the NSA/Pentagon/MI5/etc. but please understand that a quick trip to a few IRC channels on EFnet would show that there are WAY more 15-year-olds with 30,000-computer botnets just itching for someone to give them money or lulz to launch an attack on a government. they’ve taken down NASA and the NSA on multiple occasions. please spend a small amount of time on a 0-day exploit channel, or at least read a few issues of 2600 or Phrack. our government has a bunch of smart hackers, make no mistake. but there are more of us than there are of them.

the internet is just fine. this story is a scare piece that depends on the ignorance of the reader to be effective. educate yourself.

I’d rather have the hackers control it than our government!!!

    7. Doomgerbil Says:

hackers should attack the banks…only they have the power to stop the new world order, a political fix is impossible short of a revolution.

JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE TO INTRODUCE INTERNET 2(WATCHYOUNET).ONCE THE INTERNET IS GONE FORGET ABOUT IT!!

Unfortunately, this world has no hope as long as we are looking to current so-called ‘leaders’ to lead us. We don’t need to be led. We need to start leading ourselves —- AWAY from the lunatic, insane world controllers of today.
