Iran urges ECO to drop dollar

The Iranian president calls on a regional economic body to abandon the US dollar in order to reduce the effects of the financial crisis.
In a Tuesday speech to a meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the 10-member group of Asian nations could adopt a single currency instead of the US dollar to shield their financial systems from the negative impacts of the global economic crisis.
ECO was originally founded by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, but was later joined by the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.

Member states also agreed during Tuesday’s ministerial meeting to establish a body with the aim of improving the financial system of the organization and finding a breakthrough solution to their economic setbacks.
The Iranian president said the underlying principles of capitalism were to blame for the ongoing global financial meltdown.
Financial cooperation, banking, fighting corruption and money laundering as well as expanding cooperation in the private sector were on the Tuesday meeting’s agenda.

The Iranians have in fact been talking about starting a burs for their oil sales using the Euro instead of the U.S. dollar for years. And that is probably the real reason the present administration in Washington has been agitating with Iran.
People have to understand that this is not necessarily a move of anti-Americanism. It’s business. The U.S. dollar has been the base and reserve currency of the planet for decades. And nations doing business with the U.S. dollar want a bang for their dollar. With the skyrocketing debt and threatened devaluation of the U.S. dollar, people are looking to get out of it into something more stable. Nations don’t want to be stuck with a devalued American dollar. It’s the same reason why the Chinese are looking to convert some of their enormous U.S. currency reserves into gold.
This is a sad day for America and the American people who are also being hurt by these international bankers. But for Iran it’s more about business than the “Axis of Evil” that keeps being talked about.

The politicians -COULD- tell us the truth, but it would be panic. People would be emptying their banks, quitting their jobs, killing themselves and others. A politician’s job is not to tell the truth, but to tell you what you need to hear so you do none of the above things I mentioned.

observer, couldnt agree more, hope alot of other ‘observers’ realise this too. This is purely business, and to tell you the truth, im suprised alot of other nations havent already followed suit.
To call this a ‘call for war’, is an absolute joke. Why should iranians be going broke, and their people getting poorer than they all ready are, while a bunch of american bankers,politicans and gazillionares are robbing the entire american nation and sending the economies of the world into a tailspin? Iran has a duty to its people to get rid of the US dollar, as does many other countries in the world, personally i hope this happens at home (australia) as it would save us alot of greif. Dropping the US dollar is the only way alot of poorer nations will survive, no way can america expect nations to invest in their currency and nation, while the people who control both are robbing it blind, not to mention commiting war crimes around the globe. sorry guys but the truth hurts, this is what happens when facism takes over. expect alot more countries to follow suit .

A polite clarification, Iranians aren’t Arabs, they’re Indo-Europeans living amidst the Arabs.
It is sad to observe what is happening to America. The American people, like so many others before them, are becoming victims to these people who run the world and lurk in the shadows. A person I once knew put it this way, America is the biggest tool in the tool box for these money masters. And it appears that they are presently breaking that tool, willfully and maliciously or they are looking to discard it.
America at it’s heart is a nation of mostly good people like so many other nations on the planet. With all the wealth on this planet, things should be MUCH better for all people living on it, across the board.
