  • Iran: We will protect our waters

    Press TV
    Thursday, Aug 14, 2008

The Iranian Navy is more capable than ever in protecting our waters in the Persian Gulf, says Iranian Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.

The navy commander made his remarks after reports suggested that an armada of US and European naval vessels will be stationed in the Persian Gulf in an unprecedented build-up.

“We will protect our land and territorial waters with all our might,” said the Iranian commander.

Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the Pentagon, also commented on the issue Wednesday.

“We routinely rotate deployed naval forces in the USCENTCOM area of responsibility (one of which is the Persian Gulf),” he told The Jerusalem Post.

“As a matter of policy we do not discuss current or future ship’s movements,” he added.

His remarks were provoked by speculation prompted by the introduction of House Resolution 362, which “demands” that the US president make strenuous efforts, “prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran”.

Supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Resolution (and the Senate version Resolution 580) is considered by its critics as a means of imposing a naval blockade and restrict imports into the oil-rich country.

“This resolution, House Resolution 362 is a virtual war resolution. It is the declaration of tremendous sanctions, and boycotts and embargoes on the Iranians. It is very, very severe,” former presidential candidate Ron Paul has said.

“The fear is, they say, maybe some day, [Iran is] going to get a nuclear weapon, even though our own CIA’s National Intelligence Estimate has said that the Iranians have not been working on a nuclear weapon since 2003,” continued the 10-term congressman.

The bill, which was introduced at an AIPAC annual policy conference and is considered the lobby’s top legislative priority, has gained 261 co-sponsors in Congress and has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

In preparation for any possible act of aggression against the country, Iran has reportedly begun mass production of a high-tech naval weapons system capable of targeting any warship within a range of 300 kilometers from its shores.

“The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps recently tested a naval weapon which is definitely capable of sending any warship within a distance of 300 km to the bottom of the sea,” IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad-Ali Jafari said on August 4.

Lt. Col. Ryder, however, has cast doubt as to whether the reported deployment of the warships is aimed at the imposition of a naval blockade on Iran. “I can tell you that reports of an alleged naval blockade of Iran are false.”

10 Responses to “Iran: We will protect our waters”

    1. Brianyn Says:

      Two things,
      (a) Bill 362 and 580 haven’t even gotten out of committee yet and can’t be voted on till gov’t reconvenes in September. 580 changed a couple nuances, importantly (4) asserts that nothing in this resolution shall be construed to authorize the use of force against Iran. http://www.govtrack.us/congres.....=sr110-580

HOWEVER, it is still alarming that these bills have been introduced. And I’m sure you could interpret 580 in such a way as to provoke Iran into attacking first, and then the USA would just be “defending itself” and the war wouldn’t be the fault of the bill _per se_. So don’t sigh in relief quite yet.

(2)While the Navy officer could well have been telling the truth, you note a couple key points
      (a) he didn’t confirm that the battle groups on station (CVN Abraham Lincoln the marine command ship Peleliu) would be actually leaving the area. In point of fact, he reminded us there would be no official news of such a movement. But if there are six (Five American, one British) battlegroups in the area and they all stay, this is a very severe signal. I’m fairly sure we haven’t seen an “exercise” that big since WW II.
      (b) He says they won’t blockade Iran. He didn’t say a thing about other possibilities such as supporting Israel “defensively” if they bomb Iran or overreacting to a probable false flag attack. (ie. an Olive H Perry class frigate gets damaged/sunk mysteriously and suddenly the whole fleet attacks Iran all out within minutes. “Remember the Maine” indeed.)

    2. Prinzowhales Says:

Queen George has not given up his claim to be above the law… he is a law unto himself and could unilaterally proclaim a blockade of Iran without Congressional approval. The Congressional declaration that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is a terrorist organization could just as easily provide Queenie with a claim to have Congressional approval for blockade or war…against the Revolutionary Guard and thus Iran.

WAY PAST TIME FOR REGIME CHANGE IN WASHINGTON!

    3. Daniel Says:

If Iran manages to sink an allied ship……they will be obliterated. And nobody will give 2 craps about china and russia talking trash or objecting. Kinda like the U.S. talking crap and not doing diddily about georgia. It’s all a game…..yet sooner or later they will have more then one checkmate simutaneously….and then it’s bombs away.

    4. JJ Says:

      Daniel,

Iran may be obliterated in that event but they will also obliterate a bunch of economies by smashing the oil prices to $300 a barrel or more. they have set up their own little mutually assured destruction mechanism with the US. they basically got a “you can take out our military and even our entire country but we will take out your super-power economy and make the Iraqi gov, army and police fall apart”

    5. Karmakaze Says:

      @Daniel

“If Iran manages to sink an allied ship……they will be obliterated.”

You and the US and Israeli governments wish, but the reality is far from that. The only way that could be possible is if the US nukes Iran, and you can be damned sure Russia would nuke the US if that happens!

“And nobody will give 2 craps about china and russia talking trash or objecting.”

Objecting? Try “rolling a huge armoured force through the land route to Iran”. Before the US could even load tanks onto ships, Russia could have an ARMY in Iran.

Have a look on a map. See where Georgia is? See the nation right beside it, Armenia? That is a Russian and Iranian ally. That is why the US just shat themselves when Russia got 1200 tanks into Georgia in less than 24 hours. Those same Russian tanks could cover the approximately 400km journey to Iran on a single tank of gas!

    6. Professor Tim Says:

      Please remember your history…

When attention is focused upon a certain area, chances are that something far more important is happening somewhere else in the world. Again, I will suggest that the sea-change in Pakistan is of far great value to the Imperial forces than this “dog and pony” show to to south. Remember, many of us have only the major media and the “look over here” strategy to go on. Do a little digging and the real truth will surface. Also, please understand that a very small country is not worth the risking of billions of lives to both the Russian Federation and the “Western Powers”. Believe me that this is a scripted event to keep the masses entertained. If for one minute, you believe that these button pushers are not in cahoots with each other, please keep you eyes on the circuses that permeate the status quo.
