Southerners have often been accused of losing our minds when it snows. Well, we’ve got a tale you’re not going to believe. But its true.
Seems it snowed about six inches in Stokes County last Saturday. Maybe more, maybe less. But however much it was it was enough to get the august salons of the King City Council in a tizzy. And they lost their minds.
Seems the Honorable Mayor and the City Fathers decided they should declare a State of Emergency. And they did.
Whereupon the King Police Chief Paula May reasoned that this proclamation of emergency kicked in N. C. G. S. 14-288.7 which prohibits citizens from driving, buying alcohol and carrying firearms in vehicles. And since Barney was no where to be found Chief May because Da Law to keep people off the seven streets in King.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
But don’t you just know it, those crazy media people picked up on it. Story rant on WXII in Winston-Salem and got picked up on the Drudge Report. Now the whole world knows about King, N. C., population 5,952 in the 2000 census. We’re told it’s a bit less now days. King is located in Stokes County, just down the road a piece from Mayberry (No, we’re not kidding about that, it really is right down U. S. 52 from Mt. Airy (which was the real Mayberry).
But on Monday the honorable Town Fathers had had enough and they rescinded the Proclamation of a State of Emergency. And they left poor Ms. May to defend what happened. Word is they did not even issue her a bullet with which to deal with the problem. Even Andy did that much for Barney. But not to worry, Chief May told WXII reporter Jermont Terry that “We didn’t take any enforcement actions.”
But we do wonder why the Town Fathers can’t get that lady a uniform with a bright, shiny badge to go with it….I mean being as how she’s now famous and on TV so much.
You can read all about it here. The comments are better than the story; don’t miss them.
And in all seriousness, Stokes County is beautiful country. And the people are really wonderful folk, except that darn Mayor and Town Board…when it snows a little.
