Kucinich: UN should investigate Israeli Gaza strikes

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) called for an independent investigation to be led by the United Nations into the recent eruption of violence between Israel and Hamas along the Gaza strip that has killed scores of innocent civilians.
Monday brought a third day of Israeli bombing Gaza in what the state is calling its “all-out” war on Hamas. So far, 345 people have been killed by the bombs. At least 57 of the dead are civilians, including 21 children, according to the UN.
Kucinich said he wrote to UN General Secretary Ban ki-Moon urging an “independent inquiry of Israel’s war against Gaza.” The Democratic lawmaker said Israel’s attacks are an example of “collective punishment,” which violates the Geneva Conventions.

“The perpetrators of attacks against Israel must also be brought to justice, but Israel cannot create a war against an entire people in order to attempt to bring to justice the few who are responsible. The Israeli leaders know better,” Kucinich said in a news release Monday. “The world community, which has been very supportive of Israel’s right to security and its right to survive, also has a right to expect Israel to conduct itself in adherence to the very laws which support the survival of Israel and every other nation.”
Kucinich compared the latest bombing campaign to Isreal’s earlier strikes at southern Lebanon targeted at Hezbollah. Then too, he said, civilians were killed, infrastructure was destroyed and lawlessness took hold in the country.
“All this was, and is, disproportionate, indiscriminate mass violence in violation of international law. Israel is not exempt from international law and must be held accountable,” he said. “It is time for the UN to not just call for a cease-fire, but for an inquiry as to Israel’s actions.”
President Bush, on the other hand, has signaled a continuation of his firm support for Israel.
“In order for the violence to stop, Hamas must stop firing rockets into Israel and agree to respect a sustainable and durable ceasefire,” White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.
Congressional leaders likewise signaled support for Israel.
“I strongly support Israel’s right to defend its citizens against rocket and mortar attacks from Hamas-controlled Gaza, which have killed and injured Israeli citizens, and to restore security to its residents,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said Monday. “Hamas’ failure to stop these attacks only exacerbates the humanitarian situation for the residents of Gaza and undermines efforts to attain peace and security in the region.”
President-elect Barack Obama, vacationing in Hawaii, has tread lightly regarding the conflict. His transition team will only say that he continues to “monitor global events” noting, “There is one president at a time.”
Israel has declared some areas around Gaza “closed military zones” and is beginning to amass tanks there saying it is prepared to continue operations as long as necessary.
“The goal of the operation is to topple Hamas,” Deputy Prime Minister Haim Ramon said on Monday in televised comments.

This is part of the problem I have with Alex Jones. I for one do not recognize the UN. Alex talks about how we need to get out of the UN and how the UN is part of the problem. But then he posts stories about how the UN should get involved in international matters. To me that’s a contradiction.
Plus what is a war crime? Its an international law. Do we not oppose international law? Too much contradiction to take some times from this site. If Israel and Palestine are fighting, that’s between them. Both sides have faults and both sides have valid reasons to defend. Did one create the other or did one plant agents into the other for control reasons. Sure, but who cares as long as its not pulling us in.
Let them kill each other if they want to. Both sides love the taste of blood so why would we tell them what blood to drink?

I think the UN needs to leave people alone and let the two just fight it out. I also think the US (AMERICA) should stop all aid to Israel and the world as as whole. James B. Norman, have you been smoking crack or something? It is well known that the John Birch Society (which is the maker of that video) is a facist right wing christian organization, that only promotes the agenda of christian fundamentalists. They promote lies, in order to promote their own agenda -which is the control of everything in the USA. The irony of it is that the things of which they accuse the UN are the things they themselves are guilty of.
These fundamentalists are the ones that want to create a one world religion (christianity), by imposing their own will on the masses. The UN is respectful of other cultures and a diversity of faiths.
Our United States government has been the perpetrator of violence and promoter of colonialism, from the beginning. The Monroe Doctrine was a way for our country to tell others that they cannot come into our hemisphere and take what we want to control. The same can be said for most of our international policies.
The UN is good, because it tries to keep governments like our in check and promotes a standard to which ALL nations must agree to adhere. Ours is one of the few that says to hell with the law, let us go at it on our own.

I agree with #20. Kucinich is making the only appeal available, since our US government is obviously supporting Israel in its atrocities. They also need to investigate Egypt for sealing its borders and not letting the Palestinians out of Gaza who want to escape the violence.
God bless Kucinich for highlighting the corruption of Israel, the US, and the UN if they do not respond. I appreciate his effort, consistently doing whatever he can under the circumstances.

i think a few people, are missing the point about the UN, (american education system, please), i have seen ‘endgame’ and understand Alex ’s view, but to all the yanks posting on here, go through some media sources from a different continent of the world, and find out what the UN actually is, and what it does and means for smaller nations who have too defend themselves from facist powers with sticks and stones. trust me, learn about the UN’s constant fight against imperialism. If a thief intent on helping himself to your personal treasures was to break into your family home late one night while you and your loved ones were in bed asleep, if after hearing him enter you got up to confront the intruder physically fighting tooth and nail to protect your home, possessions and family during a exhausting life or death struggle, if that heartless perpetrator possessed superior physical strength and was capable of easily overpowering and killing you, when eventually he was caught by authorities would it be justified for any court of law or jury to acquit that murderous thief exonerating him because he acted in self defense? Once the Israeli verses Palestinian conflict is put in realistic perspective the absurdity of Israel’s claim to self defense is so much better understood. Unarguably Israel forcefully entered Palestine and has since that time eagerly helped themselves to the Palestinian’s real estate and natural resources. They use their military to intimidate, humiliate, starve and even murder the legitimate residents, or the Palestinian people in their own cities, neighborhoods, homes and streets.
Remarkably Israel claims that they are only acting in self defense against Palestinian aggression. They categorically deny that they are actually perpetrating this illegal military occupation and genocide against the sovereign nation of Palestine that everyone sees occurring. They are using exactly the same type of ludicrous defense mechanism that the murderous thief did in analogy I used the above.

Every war is “collective punishment”, embargos are collective punishment on an economic level which can also be responsible for loss of and/or misery for innocent life. Whether the people of a nation agree or disagree with their leader/s they all have to pay the price for the stupidity of their leader/s or reap the rewards of their intelligence.
To solve the embargo “collective punishment” problem, intelligent leaders will want to build and structure their country to be as economically independent as possible, to maintain its sovereignty and build as strong a defense system as it needs to protect itself with strong internal checks and balances to help filter out tyrants and egomaniacs . Some may call this isolationism and protectionism but it is the number one responsibility of each nations government, just like each nations government is the responsibility of its citizens.
To solve the “military” “collective punishment” problem, intelligent leaders will not want to bet their country and every life in it that any other nation/s will come running to their rescue should they (justly or unjustly) bite off more than they can chew. They will also understand that diplomacy should always be used first and then embargos if that option even exist. Military firepower should only be used in self defense of military firepower period!
If a nation has leadership that can not or will not control its own citizens thru law enforcement to abide within this framework, the leadership has failed its citizens and should be replaced by the citizenry before some other nation does it for them. Intelligent/responsible leader/s will also weigh the firepower, the cost and the consequences VERY carefully before ever firing the first shot and/or declaring war, because any violence can easily escalate into complete and total annilation of a people/s and/or nation/s in the 21st century. Only a complete idiot or diabolical maniac would want to go to war for any reason other than self defense and only then if the firepower existed and was available for a chance of winning.
That said, I fully understand the mentallity of gorilla warfare and the strategy of not having to win battles but only survive long enough to win the war and that does and has worked many times in the past but this approach is becoming well known and more useless every day. I also understand the mentallity of dying for a cause whether it be religion, freedom, revenge, ego, democracy, patriotism, way of life, culture, booty, oil or any other thing that a person feels strong enough to die for.
War is not a game or sporting event, if you just have to have one, have it with the mindset of totally and without mercy annillating your enemy or be willing to die by the same from him. If a leader/s is to stupid to understand this then he is not much of a leader.
Any nation that can not or will not feed, clothe and shelter its own citizens is not much of a nation, no nation owes a living to another nations citizens, a nation of beggars is incapable of sustaining independent existence much less enough military might for war.
Getting a little more specific now, Palestine had a pretty good tourism industry going from what I hear and I’m sure they could have many other kinds of industry if their leadership focused in that direction but economic independence and peace does not seem to be the piority for some reason, based on what limited information I have (and I realize there is probably a lot more to it than I know about). BUT, even if justification does exist for it being Israel’s fault that Palestine has economic problems, starting a war is the exact opposite of a cure for the economy and especially if a major industry is tourism. Legal channels, diplomacy, publicity and patience will eventually win economic independence and peace if it is truly desired. Constantly and indescriminently firing rockets against anybody and everybody within range, month after month, day after day and hour after hour against a vastly superior force is pure stupidity. Idiots that do this are in time not only sealing their own fates but the fate of their families, relatives, countrymen. young, old and innocent, as well as their nation to annilation. Its a stupid suicidal death wish but if thats what they want then thats what they will get.
If Palestine is not interested in economic independence and peace because it is accepting money from a country that is only using Palestine to help start WW3 then Palestinians are not only stupid but deserve whatever they get. Here are a few age old wisdom tidbits that come to mind, stay home where you belong, mind your own business, don’t start no crap and there probably won’t be any.
Being an American (of the humble variety) I am still chapped over the USS Liberty slaughter but there is probably more to that than I know about too, so I’m not a big fan of Israel’s government either. As far as that goes I’m not a big fan of America’s government which anyone that reads this site will undoubtably understand.
BUT, being a Christian first, father and grandfather second and American third, I believe what The KJ Bible says. if you dig a little into the history of the languages and words, you would know, like everything else that they deliberately use the wrong words to describe the bad things, let’s examine these words
Fas and Jus
Fas in Greek means the God’s Law
Jus in Greek means Men’s Law
And they use Fas-cism to describe everything that is evil
and Jus-tice as if men’s Justice is better
It really drives nuts to see the misuse of words this way.
