Parents from Treadway Elementary School in Leesburg were outraged after learning that because of safety concerns they weren’t allowed to attend student-recognition events traditionally open to families.
Last month, parents weren’t invited to the school’s honor roll, Terrific Kids or Student of the Month ceremonies, according to district spokesman Chris Patton, events that typically attract hundreds of parents during school hours. Student-only socials were held in lieu of an assembly.
As a precautionary measure, the school administration and safety committee decided some events could be student-only, according to a letter sent to parents Jan. 28. The change also saves class time, the letter stated.
“Please understand it is not our intent to cancel every school activity that is attended by family and friends,” Principal Rhonda Boone wrote. “Student safety is a community concern. We thank you for your support in understanding that these changes help decrease the vulnerability of our students’ safety during school hours.”
