Libyan helicopter gunships have fired on rebels advancing along the coast towards the capital Tripoli.
Forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi were also engaged in fierce ground battles with the insurgents.
The rebels are attempting to cut a path west towards Sirte and beyond to Tripoli in the west, the main stronghold for the leader.
They secured control of oil ports Brega and Ras Lanuf and were advancing when the warplanes swooped.
