London Musicians Must Give Police Swathes Of Personal Information To Perform Live
Eight page form will detail names, aliases, private addresses, phone numbers of all musicians and ethnic background of the likely audience

Musicians and performers in London will soon be required by law to complete and hand over to police an eight page form detailing all their personal information and the ethnic background of their audience if they want to perform.
The information will be collected by venue owners and managers throughout the city, who will have to adhere to the process should they wish to promote live music.
Failure to comply with the information demanded on Form 696 could mean the loss of a licence or even a fine and imprisonment, reports the London Independent.
Police quietly introduced the legislation in 2006, and have recently defended it, saying they need the details in order to ensure safety and “identify troublemakers”.
Groups of musicians and promoters have slammed the move, suggesting that it will harm the live music scene and encourages venues to effectively spy on patrons. Others have described the bureaucratic process as a form of racial discrimination. There are also fears that the legislation will be applied throughout the country if it is accepted in the capital.
The Musicians’ Union is consulting lawyers over the invasion of privacy, while another group, UK Music is seeking a judicial review.

As with most recent legislative erosions of civil liberties, form 696 is a phenomenon of the culture of fear our governments have consistently fashioned and promoted over the past decade. In a post 9/11 / post 7/7 world, everyone is treated as a suspect until proven otherwise, especially if you have brown skin and a foreign sounding name.
Musicians and performers are no exception.
Take the case of The Clash tribute band member Mike Devine who was arrested at his office in Bristol and taken away for questioning after he sent an SMS text message containing lyrics from the song Tommy Gun to his lead singer who had forgotten the words.
The message read:
“How about this for Tommy Gun? OK – SO LET’S AGREE ABOUT THE PRICE AND MAKE IT ONE JET AIRLINER AND TEN PRISONERS”
A terrorism analyst told reporters that the interception provided proof that Britain’s spy teams at GCHQ were actively monitoring all vocal and textual mobile phone traffic.
That was 2004, now in 2008 the British Government has openly announced that it wants to make that very practice lawful.
In a similar incident, Harraj Mann was reported to the British airport police for listening to a Clash record in a taxi on the way to the airport. The weasel driver was so frightened by some of the lyrics that he took them as a rallying call for a terrorist attack.
Of course it is unlikely that the police or the government will raise an eyebrow to the mindless gibberish passing for lyrical content in the majority of musical performers’ work.
Ask yourself, who is more likely to be classed as the “troublemaker”? Will it be the performers who sing endlessly about money, bling and easy girls or will it be those who wish to address real issues and make their audiences think about more than the pursuit of expensive baubles and trinkets?

The trend of allowing the UK police to ask for such information is very disturbing, although I have read in the case of this particular form that the lack of complete information cannot be used by the police to prevent performances by musicians. Still, I very much approve of what may be hyperbole here, because such fights MUST be organised to nip things in the bud, not wait until there there is a towering tree that must be ripped from the ground.
But Blair doesn’t win by presenting his horrific police state proposals one at a time. In the UK, we are swamped by such policies, ensuring that they won’t all be opposed effectively, and also ensuring that the principle of such acts gradually becomes more acceptable by a drip drip process.
A good example is fingerprinting in schools. Sure, some schools have management that would never allow it (whilst not mandatory) and other schools have parents that would tear down such initiatives. However, none of that matters if more and more schools use it. Sooner or later, their numbers are used to justify bringing in a compulsory policy under the phoney bulls**t principle of democracy = tyranny of the majority.
Blair pushes one theme above all other. If more people go along with something than oppose it, those that oppose it are the enemies of ‘democracy’, and thus not only can you ignore them, but you actually have a duty to do so in order to teach them a lesson. This tactic is known as the ‘perversion of common-sense’ method. Get the sheeple to think that a wicked act is simply an act of ‘common sense’. Bit like calling Israel a ‘democracy’ when all the jews that live there mean by this is that when the jewish invaders from europe and america had driven out/murdered enough of the rightful inhabitants of the land, they held a popular vote to justify their crimes against Humanity.

The current rulers/leaders of not just the UK, but the also the rest of the Worlds nations are an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE, they are not fit to lick the boots of real leaders like Ghandi, Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King.
What made these leaders stand out was that they talked about ‘PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY’. A concept which to blamers, liars, and excuse merchants are beyond

Sounds like a way to soften the public up for more Government monitoring. The Brits are already being watched pretty closely but the scary thing is a trial balloon like this will be used by the NWO in other countries(US etc.) if they’re allowed to get away with it. I mean even if volcanic’s comment is slightly true, we still all have a responsibility to ourselves and collectively with each other to properly inform, educate and stand up for truth and freedom. We have nothing to loose to try and just as much to loose for ourselves and future generations if we do nothing. I like Gerr’s comment(25) that “practising free speech” is a good way of resisting in a normal way. But on that note I beleive the Lord will ultimately put down evil which he already defeated at the cross and will come back to reign and rule. Maybe people will not wake up as they refused to love the truth and so God sends them a powerfull delusion to recieve eventually their just punishment for wickedness.

This flies in the face of personal privacy. I was a lead singer for years, and I dare say that if some of the despotic and horny, touchy feely owners of some of the venues we played to survive had access to my personal information, I would have been very afraid. Stalkers were a problem as it was. What about the security of the individual from questionable people? There are a LOT more of those vs. terrorists. I don’t believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater. This hue and cry for ’security’ seems to justify all sorts of unthinkable invasions of upstanding. tax paying, law abiding citizen’s autonomy. How about this; don’t throw your weight around in another’s country, and you won’t have people thinking about gunning for you because of personal loss, grief, or external oppression.

Form 696 is nothing. You should see Form 666 which requires your ID to be indelibly injected into you or else you will not be able to buy or sell anything.

Is the entire population to give up an inherent right to autonomy because of a couple of actions of a few? If so, the bad guys win, and everyone else loses. I know a teacher that cancelled a grade three Hallowe’en party that the entire class had dressed up for and looked forward to for weeks because two chronic class troublemakers out of 35 kids had acted up, so in her flawed logic, the party was cancelled. The entire class spent the party hour at the end of the day with their heads down on their desks. The kids were too young for peer pressure, and all felt badly about themselves for years after that. Who won here? Sacrificing all to societal misfits rewards the misfits, and punishes the good people, of which there are considerably more. Bureaucrats have seemingly taken leave of their senses and ideals in their rush to cover their arses.

Unfortunately, these kinds of moves tend to encourage far more black market activities as a matter of principle for most independent minded people. Why are my shoes tied so tight? Oh, because I ruled to enact and voted for it?!? What the heck? Wise men know when to stop, and when enough is enough. Liberty should never mean ever increasing stifling restrictions everywhere. Human beings need a bit of room to move, or it will all fall apart in kneejerk reaction as people seek to break free as mammals do. I’m a definite law and order and tax paying citizen, and always seek to cooperate wherever I can, and am only citing human nature, being what it is. Too much regulation feels too heavy on society’s shoulders, and utimately serves to make people’s lives too difficult. There is a price to pay in a decline in societal mental health and the resulting fall in tax revenue along with increases in the utilization of welfare or social programs. Fiscally healthy nations encourage risk, commerce, and personal freedoms with a resultant spike in healthy, thriving bottom lines and tax revenue. I must add with the prerequisite minimal regulation and oversight plus rule of law to prevent investment or banking fraud, lol. In my humble opinion. If an opinion is expressed in a forest, does anybody hear it?

I agree with kevin(56) any requirement for information re the ethnicity of any gathering, should be challenged in the same manner that similar ideas were challenged in America’s

Politicians would do well to remember who it is who put them where they are. They can soon enough be removed, and although the British people tend more towards apathy now than they have done at any time ever there will still be a point where people will take no more, and the harder the politicians push the more likely it is that people will not wait for a chance to vote… This country and it’s “democratic political system” is supposed to be about self-determination by the people/for the people and all that old cobblers.
