Low-flying Air Force One lookalike freaks out NYC

A number of buildings in New York City were evacuated Monday morning after a trio of low-flying planes flew near the Statue of Liberty.
“An Air Force One lookalike, the backup plane for the one regularly used by the president, flew low over Manhattan on Monday morning, accompanied by two F-16 fighters, so Air Force photographers could take pictures,” the New York Times reports. “But a lack of awareness about the flyover led to the evacuation of several buildings in Lower Manhattan and Jersey City, N.J., and perplexed officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other authorities were inundated with calls from anxious ferry passengers, office workers and residents in the area.”
“It is pre-planned, pre-coordinated with everyone involved,” FAA spokesman Jim Peters said. “It’s a military flight over New York to take photos.”
Peters added, “We’ve gotten reports several buildings in Jersey City were evacuated.”
One eyewitness told the New York Times, “People came pouring out of the buildings, the American Express Building, all the buildings in the Financial District by the water. And even the construction guys over by 100 North End Avenue area, they all got out of their buildings. Nobody knew about it. Finally some guy showed up with a little megaphone to tell everyone it was a test, but the people were not happy. The people who were here 9/11 were not happy. New York City police were standing right there and they had no knowledge of it. The evacuations were spontaneous. Guys from the floor came out, and one guy I talked to was just shaking.”

One NYC television station received a number of phone calls from New York City residents “furious that local authorities hadn’t notified anyone about the fly-over.”
“According to many callers who flooded CBS 2 with their concerns, at about 10 a.m. the aircraft were seen flying at low altitudes over the Statue of Liberty and parts of lower Manhattan,” WCBS reports.
One sample follows: “We saw a low-flying 747 buzz the Southwest edge of Manhattan, at Battery Park City, with a fighter jet appearing to chase it on its left wing. At about Rector Street or so, it took a hard left and looked to be headed straight for Jersey City. It flew over J.C., turned south, and continued to climb over Newark. It left our sight, only to return on the same path a second time about five minutes later. It was confusing and panicked the office. We dialed 9-1-1 and considered whether to evacuate. We were told by 9-1-1 that it was ‘authorized’ to be there. We later learned, from your website, that it was part of a DOD ‘photo op.’ NotifyNYC advises it was ‘part of an approved federal activity.’ To conduct a ‘photo op,’ unwarned in advance to Lower Manhattan residents and workers, in that manner was completely irresponsible.”
Newsday notes, “About 1,000 workers gathered along the Hudson River esplanade until a security officer with a bullhorn told them it was a planned exercise.”
“After the incident, New York City released an advisory that the flyover was ‘part of an approved federal activity,’” Reuters reports.

The Federal government had full knowlege of what was happening, and did nothing to warn or prepare the public, for a photo-op. We’re just lucky this one didn’t involve controlled demolitions….

Yeah, why the need for a photoshoot opportunity now? Is it estimated that the real AF1 won’t be up in the air anytime soon or will it be grounded soon following an Influenza Pandemic, so they need photographs relevant to Presidential activity and movement covered now?

Photoshop?? They didn’t use photoshop, because there was no photo Opp!!! That’s a lame excuse for something else that someone somewhere is putting together Some ppl in lower Manhattan were told that this was a “drill” …. I also read something about their being a similar “drill” in Marina Del Rey, Cali over the weekend

Gee what a waste of money and resources. How much was spent on fuel and personnel costs to us the people. Well I guess they’ll just tack that on the next stimulus package or maybe this is to weed out the weak hoping they die in the evacuation. My wife went home scared to death because of this it was so close to her building it looked as if it would hit it. People panicked and ran for the streets. Way to go really show the people how the democrats waste money.

I agree. This is a definite operation. It may just be psycological in nature though. Just to see how people would react. We as a nation acted super poorly on this one. I think if a virus were to be released they would just do the same as they did with HIV. Secretly inoculate people with a test drug or just put it in a vaccine. Its a good thing that sept 11 01 is rehashed; more people will wake up quicker.

If I remember correctly the air traffic controllers on 9/11 were told the highjacked flights were “authorized” as were the US Airforce scramble jets that were sent east of Manhattan instead of to the highjacked planes

I’m a pilot, okay, I am a 747 pilot and this was just fucking stupid! We civilian pilots go out of our way to avoid pointing our airplanes at buildings because we know the sensitivity of the issue. What a bunch of dumbfucks! And these idiots are running our country? People, if ever there was a time to be vigilant now is it! Imari, I had to think long and hard how to respond civily to your reply. We do all have the right to free speech and you have your right to yours. I respect that. Here’s mine again. First of all, I am a real pilot, not to be arrogant but I am a very experienced
pilot. I am also a patriot from the United States of America. By your name I suspect that you are not from America. In our country, we have the freedom to be pissed off at our government without the fear (supposedly) of retribution. Maybe that isn’t so in your country and you are scared to speak your mind. I feel for you. Lately, and not just one political party or the other, the government has proven themselves to make idiotic decisions that an old lady would do a better job at. I am also a war veteran, maybe in a country near you so I take my rights seriously. Maybe when you grow a little older and have to defend yourself against tyranny you will understand what everyone on this website is talking about. Flying an airplane, any airplane, low over a city that experienced a terrorist attack by assholes that hijacked airplanes is insensitive to the people in that city. Or, as I said earlier. An NYPD spokesman said the police dept. was told not to disclose the operation to the public. So basically the story is that it was a secret operation using Air Force One at building level over Manhattan flanked by F-16s in broad daylight. Riiiiight.

They could have done photo ops from 130,000 feet in the air…satellite. They just recently they opened up the tourist attraction…Liberty Island a few weeks ago. There are 2 VC-25 aircraft. They would not use an F-16 to make a super high quality publicity photo over a specially equipped aircraft. Nor were the F-16’s in any kind of position to take the ‘proper’ photo angle. Either this was a junket with VIP passengers or Obama himself was on a literal power trip and on board. You wouldn’t think a $330k taxpayer funded ‘publicity photo op’ wouldn’t be classified. The only thing ‘transparent’ in this presidency is Barry himself, because all I see on TV is an empty suit.
