Scientists believe they have found a way of protecting astronauts from a dangerous source of space radiation, clearing one of the hurdles towards sending humans to Mars.
The device has been developed by British and Portuguese scientists and appears in the journal Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion.
Radiation is one of the greatest challenges facing a mission to the red planet, planned by the United States and Europe in the first half of this century.
The shortest round trip would take at least 18 months, and during this time, the crew would be exposed to sub-atomic particles that whizz through space. These particles are capable of slicing through DNA and boosting the risk of cancer and other disorders.

The peril has been known for nearly half a century, but has seemed difficult to solve because costs and technological difficulty.
Some experts have toyed with the idea of shielding the crew with lead or massive tanks of water, but the price of lifting this load into orbit from earth is high.
Another idea would be to swathe the spaceship with a replica of earth’s own magnetic field, deflecting incoming cosmic rays.
According to previous calculations, the spacecraft would have to generate a magnetic field hundreds of kilometres across.
But such equipment would be huge and drain the ship’s energy supply and its powerful field could well harm the crew.
Bubble protection
British and Portuguese scientists have taken a fresh look at this old concept and say the magnetic field does not, in fact, have to be huge – just a ‘bubble’ a few hundred metres across would suffice.
“The idea is really like in Star Trek, when Scottie turns on a shield to protect the starship Enterprise from proton beams – it’s almost identical really,” says Bob Bingham of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK.
Their research uses numerical simulations also used by experts in nuclear fusion, in which hot plasma is kept in place by a powerful magnetic field.
This technology provides an accurate picture of how individual particles behave when they collide with a two-pole magnetic field.
As a result, the researchers have been able to devise a smarter, miniaturised model of magnetic protection.

So, why not just use the punch cards and slide rulers that got them through the Van Allen belt 40 years ago? It’s funny too, how NASA is hopeful they can get to the moon by 2020 with their modern Ares Rocket and JX2 engines… Again, why not use the technology that got them there 40 years ago? I have more technology in my iPhone than they had in the Saturn V but they can’t get to the moon for another 10 – 20 years? In retrospect, I would have some serious questions about throwing a Nazi war criminal like Wernher von Braun billions of dollars for a space program… Except, we all know that money was really spent to put a man on the moon because we saw it on TV. All Wernher von Braun ever did was dream up ways to mass murder people for Hitler but I’m sure whatever work he did for NASA was benevolent. All those conspiracy theorists who point out that all the videos of man walking on the moon have no stars and studio lighting should have more trust in their government. It’s a terrible thought to think our TV would lie to us.

Wow. They’re going to Mars. I suppose if I were an astronaut I would want to go too. I have a suggestion: take all that money and FORGET THE SHIELD…instead just load that fucker full of these miserable policy makers, launch…and BURN.

It was the duration of the trip outside the protected field of the earth. And all astronauts have awful complications after their trips. Hell even aircraft pilots are at a greater risk to cancer because of less protection from radiation.

Moon = 250,000 miles away
Earth’s Magnetic Shield = 50,000 miles around Earth
Space Station and All Space Flights = LESS THAN 250 miles up (protected by Magnetic Shield)

All this was done under 1 Preseident, NIXON, never to be tried or accomplished again. Yet today NASA has a 12 year goal to return Man to the Moon. 1967 is took 1 1/2 years, yet with techonolgy of today it is going to take 12 years…….?????

All comments here are interesting ones, except Ken’s about Alex Jones. Even if what the details are, are correct, to say such things about Alex is what the point was that Ken is really trying to make. If 95% of what Alex says is correct, then why lambash him over that remaining 5% that might be off kilter? Considering that the extra bit of information that Ken say that Alex left out is correct, after reading his comment more than once, I must be missing something because the CONTEXT of what Alex (or actually this article) is saying seems to be said by Ken also. Am I wrong?
No matter, Ken seems to be just a frustrated male who needs a female to take away his pains from probably the recent elections. He would not be so honest about that 95% otherwise. Then again, maybe Ken needs a woman’s breast to lay his head upon rather than a shoulder, but with the right woman, the chaining he needs can be implemented by her. Yes, I said chaining. I understood, and I may be wrong, but I doubr it, as I have impeccable sources, that your guys have been on Mars for decades, going through the Navy tunnel under New Jersey, using high tech shipless travel, probably given/designed by the Greys. Why is it so hard for NASA to return to the moon if it was so easy in 1969. Six thousand pounds must be delivered into earth orbit for a trip to the moon. The space shuttle can transport 60,000 pounds.
The original Apollo 18 equipment that never went to the moon is sitting at Johnson Space Center. Rework the original equipment or reverse engineer it or whatever you have to do to put the equivalent of the Command module and LEM in the hold of the space shuttle. Go into earth orbit and then kick it out into space with the robot arm. Move the shuttle, light the fuse and away you go to the moon. Return in a week and place it all in the cargo hold of the shuttle or just offload the astronuts and return to the earth.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist …. Oh wait, it just might in this case.
Don’t need any heat shielding for reentry. Computer guidance is easy now. Don’t worry about space radiation since it didn’t harm the original astronuts.
It is all that simple if you make the assumption that they NASA did it in the first place using the method that NASA claims they did [Apollo].

Hell, lets start with something simple. Send the equivalent of the moon buggy to the moon. One of those is also sitting at Johnson Space Center. Put some solar panels on it [Why wasn't this done in the other Apollo missions]. Take some remote controlled trips at a snails pace to conserve power. Go to one of the orginal Apollo landing sites and take some pictures of the surplus equipment that Armstrong left behind and his bootprint. This will shut the lunartics up once and for all.

Do you people even understand that no Human has ever been in Zero Gravity?
The space shuttle and Space Station; which Russia had up there since 1986 (something America could never accomplish by itself, hence the “International Space Station” manned in year 2000), are NOT in Zero Gravity. They are in constant FREEFALL around the Earth. Just as a skydiver, they have reached terminial velocity, nothing more.
I know some idiot will say well terminal velocity is only 200 mph or something; incorrect, it depends on the thickness of the atmosphere you are hitting.
