Marine reservist attacked Greek priest he mistook for terrorist

TAMPA — Marine reservist Jasen Bruce was getting clothes out of the trunk of his car Monday evening when a bearded man in a robe approached him.
That man, a Greek Orthodox priest named Father Alexios Marakis, speaks little English and was lost, police said. He wanted directions.
What the priest got instead, police say, was a tire iron to the head. Then he was chased for three blocks and pinned to the ground — as the Marine kept a 911 operator on the phone, saying he had captured a terrorist.
Police say Bruce offered several reasons to explain his actions:
The man tried to rob him.

The man grabbed Bruce’s crotch and made an overt sexual advance in perfect English.
The man yelled “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” the same words some witnesses said the Fort Hood shooting suspect uttered last week.
“That’s what they tell you right before they blow you up,” police say Bruce told them.
Bruce ended up in jail, accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was released Tuesday on $7,500 bail. Marakis ended up at the hospital with stitches. He told the police he didn’t want to press charges, espousing biblical forgiveness.
But Tuesday, Bruce wasn’t saying sorry.

I agree, the average grunt cannot think for themselves. They are robots, waiting for a noncomm to give them orders. Hence my agreement with your comment about guerilla / unconventional warfare.
Many of the USMC Force Recon are trained as engineers, scientists, and such and are pretty smart folks. They have to go in somewhere and observe (recon) facilities and so forth, then report back to HQ. So they have to be smart.

I’m not so inclined to link intelligence with a college degree (after all, our presidents and policians have degrees). Having been through college myself and still going, I can say much of it is not structured around developing critical thinking as much as multiple choice questions, buddy projects and simple writing assignments.
Imagine if all military personnel (NCO’s and grunts) had to study tactics and read and compare tactics from Sun Tzu, Napoleon, Genghis Khan etc and learn about a variety of strategies? Instead we have this second generational warfare of stumbling upon the enemy, trying to pin them and calling in air strikes (modern artillery). This method is proved to fail because the Russians did it and guerillas don’t operate out of standardized bases of operation and do not have structured commands. So you disperse or kill some? Did that air strike just hit a village and kill some guy’s wife and kids? If so, you created another terrorist and the cycle repeats itself.
We need some real light infantry who not only embed themself in and around villages, but who also work to prevent unnecessary casualties and eliminate the drugs (not protect it). Until we have some real military education going on in our forces, we’re doomed to failure because we cannot admit our tactics of indiscriminate bombing and ham handed occupying countries just doesn’t work.
Probably won’t hurt to clear out the upper echelons of bureaucratic generals and other assorted scum officers who only lick boots and don’t have any compassion for those they either command or rule over.

Actually, what you describe (children, especially young males, being slaughtered by American marines) is an everyday occurence in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have heard this personally from a now AWOL vet. from Iraq who decided that running to Canada was the only way he could live with himself and avoid commiting suicide. He said to me, with tears welling in his eyes, that the soldiers are given orders on a daily basis to kick-in doors, round up the men and shoot them on the spot. He said even the young boys form ages 5-15 are slaughtered like animals, because the policy of the US government is genocide and they feel that they are reducing the # of future jihadists by taking this approach. I’ve always known this in the back of my mind, but it was indeed very compelling to hear first hand testimony from an AWOL soldier. What America has done and is doing in the middle east now far exceeds the carnage that Adolf Hitler and the Nazis perpetrated. Yet, the sheeple here are still watching American Idol and pretending that everything is just fine, business as usual. The day of some serious reckoning is indeed near for all of us!

Did the military ignore part of this kid’s education? Was he not educated in “How To Recognize A Terrorist”? I wonder what the military would tell us? What kind of information is in that course? I have had a dislike for Marines ever since my neighbor who is in the Navy took me for a tour of his ship while it was docked at the local harbor. There was abunch of them on shore leave there. They are extremely unfriendly people who walk around in what I would describe as a catatonic state basicly ignoring everyone around them. I wouldn’t call that discipline, brain washing is more like it. Even the Navy guys think they are too stuck up. This incident comes as no surpirise.
