  • Mass Use Of Electric Cars Nearing?

    Tuesday, June 23, 2009

A trial of over 340 electric cars is currently under way in an effort to accelerate their introduction into the UK. Quentin Wilson, a motoring journalist, told CNBC that this is “a seismic moment in the history of the car.” Among things that must still be tweaked in the environmentally friendly cars, he said, are “battery range and fun.”

And let us not forget compressed-air cars. Or even just bicycles for local errands. There’s a lot you can accomplish using a bicycle with a trailer hitched to it.

    2. Dave Says:

      Just look at http://www.teslamotors.com/

Too high for mass market appeal

Electric cars have a long way to go before there practical for the average person. One thing your not going to save money on fuel, as a matter of fact your electric bill would probably increase ten fold. The charging of the car itself could be a big problem for most of the people who don’t own a garage or lack covenant charging facilities. Another disadvantage is the vehicle is not always road ready and your limited to the range of the battery charge. It may be fun as a third or forth car, but as a main vehicle its years away from practicality.

The oil oligarchs will resist electric cars for years longer, because it is known that there is a strong link between the new auto power and solar energy. I believe people interested in owning an electric vehicle will have the knowledge to hook up to a solar panel. Consequently, this will lead to “off the grid” technology for the home. Any negativity toward today readiness can be overcome by watching “Who killed the Electric Car”.

You evidently don’t know what your talking about. The tesla roadster will go about 300 miles on $3 of electricity. Compared to the price of gas it proves to be very cheap.

sorry i replied to the wrong post……i’m replying to call me what you like right above you

I am telling you your information is wrong and second hand. A four hour charge consumes about one hundred amps of power at a 220 volt charge . Even at the lowest rates in the country your going to consume a lot of energy. That 300 hundred mile range is under optimum conditions and will decrease sharply as the battery ages.look at the practical end if you are a street Parker do you want to hang an extension cord out your window every night , what about times when its not possible to park near your residence are you going to use a 1000′ ft extension cord. Is an apartment house landlord going to allow 100 cords hanging from the windows. What do you do if you have an emergency and your battery is only a quarter charged, you ride 10 miles and run the rest of the way. Another point that you miss not everyone wants to ride in a tin can to save a few dollars in gas which you not going to save.

somebody hand me a beer Reply:

I really don’t understand your way of thinking,to you its feasible to spend a hundred thousand dollars for a car to save 1500 dollars a year in gas, I am not saying your a jerk but your sure talk like one.

You hit the nail right on the head somebody hand me a beer that ELVENRUNELORD

I guess that’s why they use electricity for Metro North.

I actually love old vehicles. It would break my heart if everything went fully electronic. I find that to be such a scary idea because I get a bad feeling from electronics. I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but the energy from electronics doesn’t feel good at all. Sometimes, if I stand near the vents on the back of televisions long enough, the energy coming out of it will give me headaches and make my ears ring.

      tilapia Reply:

I love to watch my food cook in the microwave oven, with my nose pressed against the window. Fascinating! But I’m beginning to worry my brain is becoming scrambled egg:).

    5. David S Says:

“Too high for mass market appeal”. Well you’re right. At $100,000 the Tesla Roadster is way too expensive for the average person. But I think Tesla made a sound decision to produce a high end sports car first. They’re developing new technology nearly every step of the way. That’s expensive. You couldn’t put that much development into an econobox and make enough money to cover the development cost, not to mention the cost of a factory capable of mass producing vehicles. So I think their strategy is to develop the technology on the sports car and then begin introducing more reasonably priced vehicles.

The range of the Tesla is about 200 miles. That’s plenty for local trips around town and commuting to work. Although it would not work for long trips. So assuming they develop a more modestly priced car it might be a good choice for a second car or even a primary car for people who don’t take long trips. BTW Tesla claims the cost of electricity is about 2 cents per mile. By comparison a gas powered car that gets 30mpg would cost 9 cents a mile if gas is $2.75.

    6. storky Says:

Many designs will die on the vine. Yes, it possibly is exciting that the technology will take hold, but I’m not holding my breath. When there are more than three choices available in showrooms with MSRP’s of less than $35,000, then we can talk about the “mass use.”

    7. Sui Juris Says:

      Can anyone say ‘Saturn EV-1′?

Don’t hold your breathe. There is still oil in the middle east we haven’t stolen yet.

      EA Reply:

i agree, after that fiasco and the buy out and dismantling of the company that made the efficient electric battery its clear that there is a factor thats probably gonna stop the production of a cost friendly electric car, oil.

    8. Horace Broon Says:

Good to hear – the sooner we get the electric car on the road the sooner we can pull out of the middle east and end climate change.

    9. Elvenrunelord Says:

Make them more fun. I’m of the mind that if drivers were having less fun behind the wheel perhaps accident levels would decrease. Driving is something you do to get you from point a to point b, not something you do for fun on a daily basis. You wanna drive for fun, get your old plastic pullup pants and tricycle and take a spin in the front yard…..stay off the road please!

    10. dazza Says:

hey i got an electric bicycle and its awesome, it can go about 27mph depending on wat motor you get, and has a range of about 31miles.

      go check out ebikes.ca

they have a whole bunch of ebike conversion kits etc. Im not trying to sell anything just a reader with an ebike.

      the name says it all

    11. Incriminally Sane Says:

Now they will be able to charge you $1800.00 per kilowatt hour so the energy companies can steal your money just like they have coddled the oil companies to do.

      Matzo Man Reply:

Think about that with subways! And we wonder why they charge so much.

    12. ebike Says:

Electric cars could be useful for commuting and short trips. I’ve been using an electric bike for 5 years and it saves me lots of time and money for short errands. I have over 3000 miles on it. There are more than 100 million electric bikes in China.

    13. Matzo Man Says:

I have too many questions about electric cars. I’ll let other people be the guinea pigs.
