McCain ad questioned as word ‘HANG’ appears over image of Barack Obama

A McCain ad aired on Fox News channel with the words “HANG” in the background along with a photograph of Barack Obama has sparked outrage after being noticed by a reporter at a local Fox television affiliate.
The words “HIGHER TAXES” are transposed on an image of Obama standing in front of a crowd. The background is blurred at the edges so that the words from Obama’s signature theme — change — has been cut down to the word “HANG.” The shot appears for about a second. You can watch the ad in its entirety below.
Asked about the image, the McCain camp said, “We’re not even validating such an outrageous and preposterous claim with a comment.”

Strikingly, the image of Obama with the word hang in the background is blurred far more heavily on the side where the C would have been, suggesting the decision was intentional. The company that produced the ad refused to comment when the local Fox affiliate inquired.
Not everyone is buying the claim the transposition is deliberate. Even at the liberal blog Daily Kos, an informal poll indicated 76 percent thought the image was deliberate, with 23 percent saying it was a coincidence.
“Is this a coincidence?” one diarist wrote. “People spend hours and hours editing political ads, I really don’t see how this could go unnoticed by the editors. Maybe they saw it and thought it wasn’t noticeable or maybe they thought it wasn’t important.”

It looks to me like the corner of the video is blacked out. Does anyone know if this ad actually ran like this on tv or is republicain style tactics in play here?

Very strange, the corner blurs in just for this section of the video and there is no reason what so ever for it. We know that the always use subliminals in political adverts, this is clearly one leap too far.

Perhaps they noticed “Change” in editing and didnt want to promote the highlight of Obama’s campaign…”Change”. Then they figured they could hide the “c” a bit more so it wouldnt stand out as much. Once they realised it said “Hang”…they left it because at a scan it just looked like “hang-higher taxes”.
why would it imply hanging obabma? it would serve good for no one. Give me one reason this would be good for McCain’s camp to have the word hang over Obama?

This is neurolinguistic programming. It is used in adverts, magic tricks and propaganda; people pay big money for these techniques because they work. You cannot have a series of giant letters over an audience captured on screen by accident. Editors, cameramen and photographers do not miss details in set piece filming. They are trained to observe set shots for lighting, contrast, depth of field, content, perspective and proportion just like painters.
You might capture oddities in street photography but in most situations you have already observed the environment to prepare the camera. Of course there is the possibility the McCain publicity machine hired novices.

The image is cut snugly around the word “Hang”. There is no way in hell that that was missed. It was intentional.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be good for them. They might have been hoping it would be noticed and cause a dispute over Obama’s race. Then if it succeeded it being brought up publicly, McCain would just use it as ammunition. Theres probably a bunch of passive-racist snippets like these in a bunch of his ads waiting to be noticed and blown out of proportion.

That’s odd how they blacked out the left top corner of the frame just enough to cover the C in CHANGE. I’d like to see the orginal tape to see if they added that effect. (I think they must have.)

This is absolutely intentional. It reminds me of some long forgotten lectures on corporate subliminal messaging in college psychology courses so many years ago. For what it’s worth: kudos to the first person to take notice and bring it into the light. Too bad this sort of thing happens to every one of us tens and sometimes even hundreds of times per day without even a second thought…just straight into the subconscious.

haha, funny, to me, it looks like the picture and/or video was decreased from its original resolution, many encode programs edit out detail first generating a darker look. If i was making commercials for either one of these punks, i wouldnt look at it with the watching eye you all do.

Put yourself in the shoes of a die hard, rich, elitist, white, republican supporter of McCain, where no man may call himself president except a die hard, rich, elitist, white republican and then ask your question again. If you have to ask at all means that you haven’t researched any of America’s past history or you assumed that all those racists in America just packed up and left. For the small minority of people who actually took notice of this in the add, there’s a majority of about one half that said “that’s disgusting” and then there’s a majority of about one half that said “that’s right”, considering the nation is split as it is.
Care to wager the first half consisted mostly of democrats and the second half mostly of republicans?
I hope we can all appreciate that though there is a method to the madness, this does not in any way mean that games cannot and will not be played. Just as long as the messages get out there to the supporters while the vast majority of the population gets slapped in the face at the same time is all that matters. It happens every day…you don’t actually think all those financial updates on the news are meant for you lowly people do you? Heck, you can barely rub two coins together between the lot of you! Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.
“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.”
