John McCain has hit back at critics who say his Presidential campaign is floundering, telling supporters: “My friends, we’ve got them just where we want them.”
Speaking at a rally in the key swing state of Virginia, the Republican was outlining his latest plans to rescue the US economy – promising to use the multi-billion dollar Wall St bail-out to help families, homeowners and retired Americans.
The financial crisis is still the number one issue on the campaign trail.
But the bad polling figures facing his campaign were never far from the surface as he made his speech. According to the Real Clear Politics poll of polls, Mr McCain is behind at least 7 points across the country and losing in most of the important battle-ground states too.

“We have twenty two days to go, we’re six points down. The national media has written us off” he told his supporters adding that Barack Obama was “measuring the drapes” in the White House.
