Republican presidential hopeful John McCain has said that Russia is controlled by a KGB-run government which is fueled by petro-dollars.

White House hopeful McCain in his first ebate with rival Barack Obama late Friday said that the Democrat’s opinion that both Russia and Georgia ‘ought to show restraint’ suggested ‘a little bit of naivete there’.

“He doesn’t understand that Russia committed serious aggression against Georgia. And Russia has now become a nation fueled by petro-dollars that is basically a KGB apparatchik-run government,” said the 72-year-old Arizona senator.

Obama however stressed that the two candidates shared similar stances on Russia, saying a ‘resurgent and very aggressive Russia’ posed a threat to regional peace.

Russia marched its special forces into South Ossetia after the Georgian early August military offensive into the de-facto region to retake it by force. The conflict ended after Moscow and Tbilisi signed a French-brokered peace deal.

“I looked in Mr. Putin’s eyes and I saw three letters — a K, a G and B. And their aggression in Georgia is not acceptable behavior,” McCain said in the first presidential debate between the two candidates.

His comments about looking into Putin’s eyes was an ironic reference to President George W. Bush’s comment early in his presidency that he had looked into the then Russian president’s eyes and got a sense of his soul.

Obama blasted Bush’s comment on Putin and said: “We have to have a president who is clear that you don’t deal with Russia based on staring into his eyes and seeing his soul.”

“You deal with Russia based on, what are your — what are the national security interests of the United States of America?”

Obama said the Russian attack on Georgia demanded ‘a sharp response from international community and our allies’.

Obama and McCain agreed that Georgia and Ukraine should be allowed to join NATO and Obama said they should be given an immediate plan for membership.
