Controversy has always been Cynthia McKinney’s trademark. This election season, she may have finally found her perfect political home. Last weekend, the 53-year-old former Georgia congresswoman clinched the Green Party’s presidential nomination; 35-year-old hip-hop activist and activist Rosa Clemente will be her running mate.
A firebrand politician best known for her impolitic statements during her more than 20 years in public life, McKinney has had a mixed electoral record as a Democrat in her district in recent years. After 10 years in office, she was upset in 2002 by fellow Democrat Denise Majette, re-elected in 2004, and ousted again in 2006 by the 4th District’s current Democratic congressman, Rep. Hank Johnson. Most commentators point to her altercation with a U.S. Capitol police officer and her accusations that the Bush administration covered up its role in the 9/11 attacks to explain the losses, but McKinney cites voting irregularities like those highlighted in “American Blackout,” a 2006 documentary that focuses on her career.
McKinney’s nomination brings some name recognition to the Green Party, but it’s unclear how far that will take them this election cycle. The Green Party barely made a dent in the 2004 election, picking up only 119,859 votes, or 0.1 percent of the total. The specter of Ralph Nader’s more successful 2.8 million vote bid in 2000 looms large for Democrats determined to prevent another third party spoiler. McKinney is joined as a non-major-party contender this year by both Nader, running as an independent, and another former U.S. House member from Georgia, Bob Barr, the Libertarian nominee. The troika may increase the number of votes that go to “spoiler” candidates–or merely splinter it.
(Article continues below)
McKinney’s goal: a full 5 percent of the vote. Checking in with her just before she won the nomination, NEWSWEEK’s Katie Paul spoke with McKinney about her reasons for running and how her campaign might affect the election season. Excerpts:
NEWSWEEK: Is there a story behind your campaign website’s name, RunCynthiaRun?
Cynthia McKinney: It came from California supporters who really, really wanted me to run. I was inclined not to. I had delayed my personal aspirations for so long, but the RunCynthiaRun group just wouldn’t take no for an answer. There’s been a long-standing relationship between me and individual members of the Green Party. They were interested in me in 2000 and again in 2004. I have been requested several times to run as a member of the Green Party. The Greens have never been on the ballot in Georgia because of restrictive ballot access laws. So while I understood that their ideals were in the places that public policy ought to be, people in Georgia just didn’t really know who they were.
You stayed with the Democratic Party until last year. Why the decision to go with the Green Party route now?
The Greens have always been supportive of my political aspirations. My very first political friend was a member of the Green Party. If you view the Youtube clip [of my announcement that I was leaving the Democratic Party], it’s really clear.

GO GET ‘EM GIRL!!!
July 20th, 2008 at 7:21 am
She all grown up now? Eyes Wide Open I Guess, there is hope she can be a different voice representing a more independent voter who wants neither repub or democrat in office. The two party system has dragged down all confidence in any brach of government run by either. Third party candidates have so much more fire to the issues they would like to see resolved, even Jesse Ventura still enjoys his victory over both crappy party’s to this day. The problem seems to be most voters or so stuck voting for Twiddle dee or Twiddle dum.

I agree with McKinney on some issues — 9/11 truth, repealing the “Patriot” Act, withdrawing from NAFTA, ending the drug war, etc. — and disagree with her on others — federal involvement in “education,” socialized health care, etc.
But overall I like her fiery spirit, and with a dozen years of Congressional experience to her credit, I consider her a legitimate candidate who, despite her flaws, is far preferable to either McCain or Obama.
However, I think she unwittingly delegitimized her candidacy to a large extent when she selected “35-year-old hip-hop activist” as her running mate. You’re running for the Presidency of the “United States,” Cynthia, not Def Jam Records.
July 20th, 2008 at 7:37 am
Yes with Cynthia we would get all the good things the headlines of this article suggest. But we would also get the mass hysteria of the New World Order, big corporation global warming hysteria rammed down our throats.
Don’t get me wrong, conservation is a great thing. Not being wasteful is a great thing. Unfortunately C02 emmissions has minor impact on the variation in the Earth’s temperature as any scientist not on the payroll of the UN or Al Gore will tell you.
Cynthia is at heart a socialist. Her ideas about taxation and government spending are frightening, but not as bad as the likes of a McCain or Obama. Still there’s a better choice for freedom. Bob Barr is the man.

She is a classy chick with major backbone when it comes to doing the right thing……more power to her…..and damn….for 53 shes looking good
July 20th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Cynthia rocks. If you ever caught any videos of her interviewing Donald Rumsfeld while she was a congresswoman… dude the guy was shivering in his boots. This girl’s got cojones bigger than any democrat or republican. She’s got my vote no contest.
July 20th, 2008 at 8:31 am
A woman of conviction and has the truth on her side. I would love to see her and Ron Paul on a ticket. Off the subject but important, we need to wipe the Masonics and their symbols off the planet…I believe they are more dangerous to our republic and the world than any other threat.
July 20th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I’ve supported her twice with money when Michael Ruppert asked for it. I like the idea of Michelle as first lady but will vote for Mc Kinney as should every Truther. Alex Jones, pay attention here.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:04 am
If Cynthia can wake up a few more american’s to the corrupt regime
of the federal reserve banks and their solders then maybe we can get alittle closer to cutting the changs of slave and just maybe a dim glimmer of freedom will flicker in the distance.

CYNTHIA, YOU GO GIRL!!!
“WHY” is there a Media “BLACK ~OUT” on Cynthia McKinney’s run for the White House???
July 20th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
foxx – Black women in general are being ‘blacked out’. Just like white men are being ‘whited out’. As soon as we wake up to these facts, and why they ARE facts, we’ll then stop drooling over the others.
July 20th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
but she is a part of the green party. should prisonplanet be automatically against the green conspiracy?
July 20th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Woo Hoo….go on…go scoop up that 1/10th of 1 percent of the vote….
July 20th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

to abraxas productions- re: “green conspiracy”
The Green Party of the United States is more than just an environmental party. In fact, its one of the most, if not the most, principled political parties in the USA. I urge you to read about the Green PArty’s 10 Key Values (pasted below). Many of these values you might share and if so, you should consider joining the Green Party of the United States or your state or local Green Party. We are not going to be break the two party system without more political parties and while the Libertarian creed might differ slightly, I think there are more similarities than differences. But, of course, that is up to you to decide for yourself.
=========================
THE 10 KEY VALUES OF THE GREEN PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES
=========================
1. GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY
Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. We will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process.
2. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
All persons should have the rights and opportunity to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment. We must consciously confront in ourselves, our organizations, and society at large, barriers such as racism and class oppression, sexism and homophobia, ageism and disability, which act to deny fair treatment and equal justice under the law.
3. ECOLOGICAL WISDOM
Human societies must operate with the understanding that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. We must maintain an ecological balance and live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet. We support a sustainable society which utilizes resources in such a way that future generations will benefit and not suffer from the practices of our generation. To this end we must practice agriculture which replenishes the soil; move to an energy efficient economy; and live in ways that respect the integrity of natural systems.
4. NON-VIOLENCE
It is essential that we develop effective alternatives to society’s current patterns of violence. We will work to demilitarize, and eliminate weapons of mass destruction, without being naive about the intentions of other governments. We recognize the need for self-defense and the defense of others who are in helpless situations. We promote non-violent methods to oppose practices and policies with which we disagree, and will guide our actions toward lasting personal, community and global peace.
5. DECENTRALIZATION
Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. Therefore, we support a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions away from a system which is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, to a democratic, less bureaucratic system. Decision-making should, as much as possible, remain at the individual and local level, while assuring that civil rights are protected for all citizens.
6. COMMUNITY-BASED ECONOMICS AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
We recognize it is essential to create a vibrant and sustainable economic system, one that can create jobs and provide a decent standard of living for all people while maintaining a healthy ecological balance. A successful economic system will offer meaningful work with dignity, while paying a “living wage” which reflects the real value of a person’s work.
Local communities must look to economic development that assures protection of the environment and workers’ rights; broad citizen participation in planning; and enhancement of our “quality of life.” We support independently owned and operated companies which are socially responsible, as well as co-operatives and public enterprises that distribute resources and control to more people through democratic participation.
7. FEMINISM AND GENDER EQUITY
We have inherited a social system based on male domination of politics and economics. We call for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. Human values such as equity between the sexes, interpersonal responsibility, and honesty must be developed with moral conscience. We should remember that the process that determines our decisions and actions is just as important as achieving the outcome we want.
8. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
We believe it is important to value cultural, ethnic, racial, sexual, religious and spiritual diversity, and to promote the development of respectful relationships across these lines.
We believe that the many diverse elements of society should be reflected in our organizations and decision-making bodies, and we support the leadership of people who have been traditionally closed out of leadership roles. We acknowledge and encourage respect for other life forms than our own and the preservation of biodiversity.
9. PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
We encourage individuals to act to improve their personal well-being and, at the same time, to enhance ecological balance and social harmony. We seek to join with people and organizations around the world to foster peace, economic justice, and the health of the planet.
10. FUTURE FOCUS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Our actions and policies should be motivated by long-term goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or “unmaking” all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-term profits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions.

one liner…
McCain represents the old folks, Hillary represented women, Obama represents the blacks sort of. so in order to get a candidate who represents all of them we need an old black woman to run for president
ok! it was a joke! forgive me! gotta have some humor!
anyway, Cynthia rocks! she has great courage and is a genuine patriot unlike 99% of our “elected” officials.
Go Cynthia!

I hate the green party. The best thing they ever did was get Cythia to run.
This race is about the person, not the party.
Barr and all independents should drop out, because the NWO is no joke.
Above all the others, Cythia is the only one for years that is truely an outsider with a chance to win.
It is time for Ron Paul and Mike Gravel to support her and her bid for president.
Otherwise, we only have the sorry excuse obombma.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I never heard anything about MLK and JFK, but if Cythia wants that, then that is what we should do. This election is about the person, and the truth. I trust Cythia.
I trust Bob Barr, but Cythia is the better chance of winning.
Failure is not an option. The NWO is no joke.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I think Alex Jones should support her also.
July 20th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Google search for the video JFK 2.
Pretty interesting. He was murdered because he had plans on abolishing the Federal Reserve and reining in the “powers that be” that lurk behind the United States pulling all the strings.
Check out the cast of characters this documentary claims are responsible for the killing.
George Bush Senior, Richard Nixon… and a bunch of other scum bags trying to climb their way to power and appease their masters.

Obama lost me when he voted for the FISA bill. Cynthia is much more in line with my beliefs anyway. She has got my vote. I cannot vote for the ‘lesser of two evils’ this time around, even the lesser is too evil. Obama still wants war, wants to expand war with Afghanistan and is ready to continue spying on American citizens.. Come on folks vote your heart.
July 21st, 2008 at 2:28 am
I gave Nader my vote in 2000 and I’m giving it to Cynthia this time.
July 21st, 2008 at 3:22 am
She’s a true heroine, a real politician… No other choice!
July 21st, 2008 at 5:03 am
Diebolt results are in …..
McCain 46%
Obama 44%
Liberatians 5%
Independants 1%
Greens 4%
The percentage of americans taking it where the sun doesnt shine 100%

here in ohio it does not make any difference who we vote for.the vote was decided for us already in Chantily,Virginia.let us not pretend that we have a real vote within the belly of the beast.you want to vote for change? vote to stop watching mind-control cable television.cancel it. you want education reform? pull your children out of state-run indoctrination schools and teach them yourself. you want universal healthcare? don’t take vaccinations for you or your family and take EDTA and essiac to expel the state-administered mercury from the body. we must pull the plug first from ourselves. then we can help unplug others.

Obama lost me when he went to the Bildeberg meeting in June, he’s just like the rest of the Magnificent Masons Movement to control the world
January 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Such a shame pussy boy Alex Jones didn’t even MENTION she (a Truther) was running.
HE BACKED JACKASS RALF NADER who is a Corperate MONSTER instead. Pure racism.
He’s an anti-liberal as much as McCarthy was anti-communist. He should be ashamed.
