Kent Police is using computer software to analyse historic offending and criminal behaviour to try and pinpoint where crimes will happen next.
It is an echo of the Tom Cruise science fiction film Minority Report in which “pre-crime” units use psychics to predict future criminals and arrest them before they have even offended.
Kent Police insisted their software only tries to spot crime hot spots and does not assess potential criminals.
However, the programme has now been rolled out across the force after a trial in the north of the country helped cut crime.
Police chiefs used the “PredPol” technology to help target areas to patrol and deter potential offenders.
