MIT scientists baffled by global warming theory, contradicts scientific data

Scientists at MIT have recorded a nearly simultaneous world-wide increase in methane levels. This is the first increase in ten years, and what baffles science is that this data contradicts theories stating man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas. It takes about one full year for gases generated in the highly industrial northern hemisphere to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. However, since all worldwide levels rose simultaneously throughout the same year, it is now believed this may be part of a natural cycle in mother nature – and not the direct result of man’s contributions.
Methane – powerful greenhouse gas
The two lead authors of a paper published in this week’s Geophysical Review Letters, Matthew Rigby and Ronald Prinn, the TEPCO Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science, state that as a result of the increase, several million tons of new methane is present in the atmosphere.
Methane accounts for roughly one-fifth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, though its effect is 25x greater than that of carbon dioxide. Its impact on global warming comes from the reflection of the sun’s light back to the Earth (like a greenhouse). Methane is typically broken down in the atmosphere by the free radical hydroxyl (OH), a naturally occuring process. This atmospheric cleanser has been shown to adjust itself up and down periodically, and is believed to account for the lack of increases in methane levels in Earth’s atmosphere over the past ten years despite notable simultaneous increases by man.

Prinn has said, “The next step will be to study [these changes] using a very high-resolution atmospheric circulation model and additional measurements from other networks. The key thing is to better determine the relative roles of increased methane emission versus [an increase] in the rate of removal. Apparently we have a mix of the two, but we want to know how much of each [is responsible for the overall increase].”
The primary concern now is that 2007 is long over. While the collected data from that time period reflects a simultaneous world-wide increase in emissions, observing atmospheric trends now is like observing the healthy horse running through the paddock a year after it overcame some mystery illness. Where does one even begin? And how relevant are any of the data findings at this late date? Looking back over 2007 data as it was captured may prove as ineffective if the data does not support the high resolution details such a study requires.
One thing does seem very clear, however; science is only beginning to get a handle on the big picture of global warming. Findings like these tell us it’s too early to know for sure if man’s impact is affecting things at the political cry of “alarming rates.” We may simply be going through another natural cycle of warmer and colder times – one that’s been observed through a scientific analysis of the Earth to be naturally occuring for hundreds of thousands of years.
Project funding
Rigby and Prinn carried out this study with help from researchers at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Bristol and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Methane gas measurements came from the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE), which is supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Australian CSIRO network.

You need not be a scientist to understand why simultaneous world-wide increase in methane levels can be measured while it takes about one full year for gases generated in the highly industrial northern hemisphere to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. That is if you’re not on the Exxon pay list to spread pseudoscience and disinformation.
At high pressures, such as are found on the bottom of the ocean, methane forms a solid clathrate with water, known as methane hydrate. An unknown, but possibly very large quantity of methane is trapped in this form in ocean sediments. The sudden release of large volumes of methane from such sediments into the atmosphere has been suggested as a possible cause for rapid global warming events in the Earth’s distant past, such as the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum of 55 million years ago.
Theories suggest that should global warming cause them to heat up sufficiently, all of this methane could again be suddenly released into the atmosphere. Since methane is twenty-five times stronger (for a given weight, averaged over 100 years) than CO2 as a greenhouse gas; this would immensely magnify the greenhouse effect, heating Earth to unprecedented levels (see Clathrate gun hypothesis).

This is alarming, it may be due to the release of stored seabottom methane that scientists have been warning about. This may be a tipping point for a large temp increase that may not reverse for centuries.

The global warming released ocean bottom methane theory would require very significantly higher temperatures, especially ocean temperatures, than were observed in the relevant time period. So this “explanation” is DOA.

Noxxe is right. Methane Hydrate is boiling up as the oceans warm. This is NOT an indication of a hole in Global Warming theory. On the contrary, this is an indication that the tipping point may already have passed. The entry of Gigatons of methane gas will increase the warming rate exponentially as the feedback loop is closed. More gas means faster warming which will release more gas still.
Thanks to all the Flat-earthers for helping things get this fucked-up.

I think making the error of not worrying about global warming out ways not doing anything about it. By chance a scientist could not understand what lead was doing in snow.
He figured out it was from Gasoline. That is why we have Unleaded gas. There is alot of things in gases from plants that may be bad for you so I think Green would be Healthier
less Health Costs. Oh it took a lot of years before dumb people agreed with the Scientist.
Like smoking cigarettes.

This is another indication that “we” do not know as much as we think we do. Science is constantly changing, which is a good thing. However, assholes like Al Gore take a limited amount of information and run off at the mouth like they know what their talking about and win Nobel Prizes.
Shit like that leads to bullshit, panic button reactions like carbon credits and carbon taxes for industry that we end up paying for as consumers. The puzzling facts presented here would have been laughed at fifty years ago. Remember, there were periods in history when we thought the earth was flat, the center of the universe, and hung people for being “witches”.
We have a long way to go for many aspects of understanding our own planet and the universe in which we live. It is such a shame that we will spend Billions each month on warfare and killing people and so little on the sciences that could lead to better scientific understandings and curing illnesses that we readily treat at premiums yet never seem to overcome.

Of course the climate is changing, the seasonal cycle is climate change. We don’t panic because we know that Winter leads to Spring again.
Imagine a longer cycle now, like the cycle of the expanding and receeding Polar Ice caps.
People walked to North America over the Bering Straight, then the ice receeded, and we needed boats to get there again. Ice ages are a recurring cycle…so how is any climate change different? I’m having trouble with that. We didn’t kill the last Ice Age with our mighty fire….
If your memory is shorter than a complete cycle of something it may apear to be a new phenomenon.

i have the deepest respect for the science community, obviously we have the best and the brightest. working on our greatest challenge, saving the planet i’m a architect i have not done my part, in the 70’s we were trained in passive energy systems and scientist in our own right, it resulted in earth day the invention of it all has been largely forgotten.
i search for alternate energy seminars for continueing education and what do i get, a tour of a brick plant, i excelled in brick at the fifth grade level. i ask the science community
reach accross and take architects to a higher level, please
i place my hope with science of all fields they stand the chance of world unity, they are the real mavericks. s
i had hoped for this in the architectural community, i am ashamed of my profession which has a great share of creative intelligence but stifled. we have green architecture and this is a start, we also should look to the past for information.
science must show the way, you stand on common ground. disproving each other in clever banter for the love of your profession and i believe they do this for there love of science.
i enjoy all sides of proof, my question, if this is a natural occurance does smoking accelerate cancer in humans and speeds death. is this parallel with our greatest asset earth. pollution is the cancer of our earth and is speeding cancer to all of us the our earth, put a sticker at the gas pump, and anywhere else that pollutes the planet, it will give us all a look at global health, we must treat our planet with science hospitals.

I don’t get this. Is Universe a conspiracy? What’s your point with all this? Prove your point. I don’t mind being wrong, but give me something that the climate panel hasn’t thought of in their calculations.
Is the whole climate change a conspiracy? By who? I have nothing against an open discussion based on facts. However, in this case I have faith in the UN climate panel as they have such a strong scientific support. They have tried this from so many angles. I think Al Gore has done a good job and he has all my respect. Almost daily there are news that supports the climate change model. Recently I saw a report about the ice on Island that is melting. Is that part of a conspiracy? Do you automatically reject such news? On what basis? What’s your goal?
I’m afraid that all this talk about conspiracies here is ruining a new 9/11 investigation. I mean, EU part of a conspiracy? Come on. Wake up. Don’t let your mind play tricks on you. Don’t be so easily fooled. The truth will definitely set you free.

Climate changes are a natural part of our earth. Global warming and global cooling are cyclical. The Global Warming Alarmists are just picking up on an environmental opportunity to control you and make some serious money to boot. Al Gore, if he has his way, will put a tax on you for breathing. The Kioto treaty is just a way, for the powers that be, to inplement a global tax. Period. It has nothing to do with the environment. Nothing. It’s all political and one process out of many, to control YOU.

I don’t even need to be a scientist to know global warming is a scam. You just need to look at the way the entire establishment is pushing it. I can tell from past experience that it is a scam. Al Gore’s name on it alone makes it a likely scam.

Oh Global Warming is real… the temperature has swung a whopping 0.5C over the last 100 years or so. But, CO2 being the reason for Global Warming is false. As usual, the MSM force feeds everyone this crap… and few have the time or the education to look into it. The real reason, which is not totally surprising (because it gives the earth it’s warmth in the first place), is the Sun. The Sun warms the oceans (which has more CO2 that any other body on earth) and causes larger amounts of CO2 to be released into the atmosphere. But the warming is not the CO2 (in fact CO2 causes surface cooling, not heating). It is the Sun’s activity that defines the warming.

I usually do not not comment on blogs people can believe in what they want to in life, but once your crazy beliefs or “feelings” never any real debates affects the world than let the science prove you wrong. Have heard people say they have seen for themselves the ice falling, crashing into the ocean… Could it possible be that the ice has been falling for Millennia. If one were to have never seen nor-heard of Niagara Falls, and you were brought there than told the earth was flooding, would you not believe it…
Global Warming scam, a Fraud, a religion of sorts.. A religion to those that believe we nasty people have caused this, and with this belief also having the ordasity to think we could fix it… Definitely a belief in something… With believing in any thing you have to have Faith correct. Yes, a faith that we peoples have caused this, being their apocalypse, not mine as with many others that look and study history, in correlation with science. Do not just take someone’s word for it, study for yourselves..even if those words come from someone considered creditable…
A student of history, and history can prove that there is a natural accordance in climate change.. that this spike in temperature or lack of it in the oceans has happened before. Known as “The Big Chill / Little Ice Age…”
I believe so much in the environment, and just can not sit by seeing this SCAM getting more and more attention. Allot of funds also being diverted to fix something that does not need fixing. Monies that could be used to educate people to recycle, be aware of waste, and to develop a car that is fisable along with liability. This would be wrong to plunge a hand into peoples wallets with the people of today having lost so much due to the greed of people. Those of us that want to see our monies used in a responsible way to truly clean, and help build a better world for a better tomorrow…

In Basic language, if CO2 CAN NOT warm two cups of water to any noticeable temperature difference,.. how can “Carbon dioxide” Heat the Oceans of the world…?
“The Little Experiment…” taking two bottles and filling them with equal parts of water. The one bottle I completely flooded with Co2 making in have an air volume of approx (92% Co2.
The other bottle is just plain air from an air compressor, the air we breath consists of 0.03 percent Co2.
heating up the bottles to the same temperatures. I took the read outs and both were the same. One read out with the Co2 should have been a higher temperature, according to what is the Co2 law… The other read out was read, after removing it from the heat. Same read-outs.
No accelerant an any way co2… Nor heat retention..?
The professor @ MIT of meteorology ,came up with theses theories, “to replace the argon gas in double pan widows, with CO2 if it retains heat so well”,.. if Co2 retains heat so well, than why not fill the Styrofoam types of installation that is used in house with Co2…
Needed supplies…
2 thermometers.
1 paper funnel.
3 2 liter empty soda bottles.
11/2 cup vinegar
3/4 cup baking soda
2 large sphere balloons , just the large enough balloons that will slip over the top opening of a 2 liter plastic soda bottle.
2 equal, identical in size thickness, 20 once cups.
2 twist-up tie off’s.
a large area that has full sun, and is free of debris that might cause shadows, will explain.
You have your (3) bottles, fill one with the 1 and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Make a small funnel out of paper, and pour the backing soda into the bottle of vinegar. This will cause a chain reaction; the vinegar and baking soda mixed, bubbling up “making Co2″… Just like in elementary school, with the toy volcano’s. Immediately place the balloon over the mouth of the two liter bottle, capturing the Co2. Let the balloon fill up. You are now making your own CO2
Let the bottle fill until there is no more Co2 to hold, and or risk of balloon ripping. Now use you tie/ twist tight the balloon. Fill the second 2 liter bottle with exactly 2 cups of water. Now once filled squeeze bottle expelling as much air as possible. Place the twist tied balloon that holds your Co2 over the bottle. squeezing the bottle flat, placing the balloon of Co2 over the bottle opening, and let the bottle fill up with the Co2 from the balloon. leave the balloon over the bottle, this will keep the Co2 form escaping, and will also keep anything else for getting inside. You now have your first controlled mini-environment #1 complete.
Now follow the same steps with the third and final faze, only exception is filling the balloon with plan air, perhaps from a air compressor. You now have your first controlled mini-environment #2 complete. Once finished you will have your #2nd controlled mini-environment. Place the two controlled mini-environment in (full) sun light, say from 10:00am to 4:00pm. allow it to be exposed to it at least 4 to 6 hours to the suns light heating the controlled mini-environments . Now take off the balloons pour the water from the bottles into the cups. Place in your thermometers in each cup taking the waters temperatures of each controlled environment 1 and 2.
Compare temp read outs… what are the temperatures.. Both read-outs came out to be the same temps…
