For those holding out for some improvement in print circulation, this morning brings disappointment. The Audit Bureau of Circulations released the latest figures for the six- month period ending September 2008 and the report shows major drops in circulation at the big metros.
According to ABC for the 507 newspapers reporting in this period, daily circulation slipped 4.6% to 38,165,848 copies. For the 571 papers, Sunday dropped 4.8% to 43,631,646 copies.
For comparison purposes, in September 2007 reporting period, daily circ fell 2.6% and Sunday was down 4.6%.

Across the country, publishers have put in place plans to cater to core readers and subscribers. It’s too expensive to bulk up circulation in unprofitable areas such as third-party, newspapers in education, and bonus day copies. Not in the core market defined by the newspaper? You are out of luck, at least for the print edition.
All daily averages below are for Monday through Friday. The percent change compares this September period to the same period last year.
Daily circ at The New York Times fell 3.5% to 1,000,665 copies.
The Wall Street Journal (as we reported last week) was virtually flat, up about 1,800 copies on a daily basis to 2,011,999. USA Today was also up a fraction of a percent to 2,293,310 copies.

I guess that means that instead of lining the bottom of bird cages with newspaper, we’ll use federal reserve notes instead.

Good one.

I agree, good one. Why the hell should we be paying for propaganda?

We do buy ahead the weekend papers; the new paper organization offered to give us the whole week for free for 18 months….they are really really in financial trouble. Hey newspapers, how about printing the truth? I pretty much read the comics and the opinion sections. Coupons to help with food storage. The rest of the paper I am keeping to make paper fire logs out of when we have no electricity.

Thanks Think!! They need to pay us to read their propaganda as I have enough to do.
This is because they are all owned by the American Publishers Association (APA). This is why when a reporter calls about a hot story like about Vera Baker, you won’t hear a word. This is why you don’t hear about Ron Paul. This is no accident.
The free paper I get I just read the ads or the local slanted news. Sometimes they have events or giveaways advertised too. But like most serfs I hardly have time for anything.

Even the desperate unsolicited COMPLIMENTARY copies of mainstream newspapers we’ve received in our letterbox over 2008 have dried up.
Oh, and good try AMEX with your unsolicited INVITATION for an American Express Credit Card in the letterbox recently! Are you for real, a credit card – in this climate – and with an American Company!

Well, let’s papers print a bunch lies and avoid telling the truth, and the circulation dwindles. Go figure.

Damn! What am I going to line my bird cages with now???

Howard:
Sorry, man, I didn’t mean to step on your toes. I was honestly being serious & had typed that before I read the comments. Glad we’re on the same wavelength though!
