Five people have been killed and at least 600 injured after gunfire rang out in Cairo during continued battles over regime change.

More than 1,500 people were injured in the latest violence, which came before dawn, as protesters remained in the street through the night following a day of clashes between supporters of President Hosni Mubarak and dissidents.

Supporters of the president have been involved in running battles with anti-government protesters after they refused to leave Tahrir Square and the latest clashes saw the Egyptian army intervene for the first time.

The army arrested people after violence was sparked by supporters loyal to President Mubarak in Tahrir square on Thursday, Al Arabiya television reported, without giving numbers.

Anti-government protesters who had camped out in the square after a peaceful protest on Tuesday had previously called on the army to intervene, with soldiers standing by during Wednesday’s violence.
