New York mayor Michael Bloomberg today visited London’s “ring of steel” CCTV operation in the wake of the failed car bombing in Times Square.
Mr Bloomberg inspected the surveillance system at Westminster Tube station with Boris Johnson. He added a stop in London to the itinerary of a long-planned European trip after the attempted attack in New York on May 1.

Mr Johnson said: “There are always painful reminders that we must never let down our guard, but it is clear that the approach we are taking – with sustained investment in policing and CCTV – is helping us make significant strides along the road of tackling crime in our city.” Mr Bloomberg said: “London has a history of standing up to terrorism – and I am here to learn from others, see what works best, and try to fix things before they become a problem.”
The capital’s security network inspired a 3,000-camera system being installed in Lower Manhattan. A similar system is planned for Midtown.
