Before the US House of Representatives, statement on H Res 997, expressing the strong support of the House of Representatives for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to enter into a Membership Action Plan with Georgia and Ukraine, April 1, 2008
Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to this resolution calling for the further expansion of NATO to the borders of Russia. NATO is an organization whose purpose ended with the end of its Warsaw Pact adversary. When NATO struggled to define its future after the Cold War, it settled on attacking a sovereign state, Yugoslavia, which had neither invaded nor threatened any NATO member state.
This current round of NATO expansion is a political reward to governments in Georgia and Ukraine that came to power as a result of US-supported revolutions, the so-called Orange Revolution and Rose Revolution. The governments that arose from these street protests were eager to please their US sponsor and the US, in turn, turned a blind eye to the numerous political and human rights abuses that took place under the new regimes. Thus the US policy of “exporting democracy” has only succeeding in exporting more misery to the countries it has targeted.

NATO expansion only benefits the US military industrial complex, which stands to profit from expanded arms sales to new NATO members. The “modernization” of former Soviet militaries in Ukraine and Georgia will mean tens of millions in sales to US and European military contractors. The US taxpayer will be left holding the bill, as the US government will subsidize most of the transactions. Providing US military guarantees to Ukraine and Georgia can only further strain our military. This NATO expansion may well involve the US military in conflicts as unrelated to our national interest as the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia. The idea that American troops might be forced to fight and die to prevent a small section of Georgia from seceding is absurd and disturbing.
Mr. Speaker, NATO should be disbanded, not expanded.

Is this a wish list, or did this actually happen? Someone has the balls (no zombie-here) to call for the disbanding of NATO…great idea. Will more than one person vote for this? Was it Dennis Kucinich? Wonderful guy, the only one left I think. He needs to watch is back and drink only from bottles and cans not already opened, and be careful of the stuff in his refridgerator, a great place to put poison. Be careful Dennis…The Black Americans (and I don’t mean africans) are much worse than those of the Soviet Union. They will kill you in a second. Oh, and stay out of small airplanes too, Bush’s favorite killer.

Good for you Ron Paul!!
The NATO attack on the people of Serbia, 78 days and nights of ceaseless bombing, all from 30,000ft leaving the Serbs defenseless and of course making real targeting impossible.
As the butcher of WACO proudly proclaimed ‘ we bombed them back to the stoneage’.
So the Russians allegedly blew up a bridge in Georgia.
NATO bombed every bridge in Serbia but with people, cars and even a packed train on them.
It bombed industrial plant the completely contaminated the Danube river and countries adjoining.
It bombed hospitals, schools, houses, power plants. It bombed everything.
It attacked civilians with cluster bombs. The most known was the slaughter of shoppers at Nis market.
The attack was completely illegal under the NATO charter. NATO is only a defensive organization but since when does Britain or America seem to care for that.
It was illegal under international law, under the UN and was the worse mass and indiscriminate murder in Europe, since WW2.
The US house of representatives never voted for it and the attack passed in the Senate courtesy of that infamous warmonger in Chief, John McCain who crossed the floor.
It was also the first neocon engineered conflict and the blueprint of Iraq.
There was NO! mass graves, NO!refugees fleeing the Serbs – just fleeing NATO bombs.
When the Serbs finally capitulated and agreed to leave THEIR OWN PROVINCE of KOSOVO, the safety of their civilians was guaranteed by general Jackson. Next day Jackson and NATO watched while 250,000 Kosovo Serbs were ethnically cleansed from their own homeland, murdered, raped and brutalised to make them leave. And NATO stood and watched it all.
Add to that NATO was complicit with the ethnic cleansing of 350,000 Serbs (20,000 murdered) from the Serb homeland of the Krajina, Croatia.
Serbia was the time I realised that NATO, THE USA and Britain were the problem – not the answer.
International butchers as Iraq and Afghanistan have shown.
Of course they bombed the Christian Serbs on behalf of the islamic terror jihadists, the KLA, formed in Albania directly by Osama Bin Laden himself when still reputedly a CIA operative. (Is he still?)The CIA was right in there too. Ensuring that their drug conduit, the terrorist islamic KLA got its rewards.
Under international law and UN resolution 1244 Kosovo is still part of Serbia.
But 140 historic christian churches have been destroyed and desecrated and the Saudis are building mosques by the dozen.

Elizabeth I am not sure if you have a loved one that is from Serbia or what, but all your points are distorted and I mean really distorted. Are you getting your news only from the Serbian State TV??? Do you know what happened in Kosovo, Spring of ‘99. In case you don’t let me tell you, since I actually was there and didn’t get my news from TV. The Serbs did start an ethnic cleansing campaign toward the Albanians. There wasn’t any Muslim against Christian conflict as you so subtly try to portray, it was a simple military campaign by Serbia to frighten the Albanians of Kosovo to not seek independence. Resolution 1244 would be valid if Kosova wasn’t given to Yougoslavia in 1912… check your history books and find out what happened when Russia, Great Britain and France were dividing territories to please their allies!
