‘No Plans’ To Cut Speeds As Oil Price Soars

Transport officials have denied they are considering cutting speed limits on the roads to conserve fuel, despite the world oil crisis.

The threat of lowering 70mph top speed on motorways has emerged following the introduction of emergency limits in Spain to conserve fuel stocks.

Government officials have admitted they are in regular discussions with Opec, the organisation of oil-producing countries, to ensure “security of supplies”.

But they say conservation of fuel is currently being left down to drivers themselves.

Transport secretary Phillip Hammond told Sky News: “I do not think (cutting speed limits) is something we need to look at at the moment.
