Watts Up With That
Tuesday, Nov 4, 2008
I’ve held off as long as I can with commenting on the presedential election, as it tends to suck all the oxygen right out of the room, but this issue needs to be aired. There’s more to Obama’s energy plan than bankrupting coal power plants. He also intends to make energy prices “skyrocket”:
This doesn’t sound sustainable to me. Hat tip to Jon Jewitt.
UPDATE: here is video from the San Francisco Chronicle of the actual interview:

Blah blah blah. I live in WV. The coal companies are totally destroying this state. Not only are they ruining the mountain heritage, the clean air, the pristine mountain streams, but the corruption that the coal companies bring to the table in the political realms has brought the WV supreme court to it’s knees. Being in one of the main coal states brings the coal issues to the forefront.
Has nobody ever heard of ALTERNATIVE energy??? These mountains would be the perfect place for WIND energy, SOLAR energy, etc. to take hold. We need to STRANGLE the coal companies in this state in order to give some incentive for the promoting of these alternative energies. Thank HEAVENS that some few people in powerful places have a bit of sense about this issue.
Coal mining will never stop in this lifetime, but in WV we see ourselves as a battleground state in the energy field. It is up to the main energy producing states to set a PRECEDENT for others to follow and if we do not stop the present destructive momentum forwards in the coal industry, we will surely be sorry later. Many residents of the mining areas are sorry NOW.
It’s a shame that this issue is being used by many folks who know nothing about coal mining and coal to electric energy to badmouth someone who actually has the right idea.
Electric rates going up? Oh horrors. Nothing will stop that. It’s a bogus argument. In WV we are expected to pay for new high voltage power lines across our state to supply coal-electricity to out of state cities. And guess what? Our electric rates are going to go up… On TOP of losing mountains, ecology, clean air, water, and on and on and on…
Get over yourselves. Things change and it’s about time!!!!!!

McCain has the same exact plan, cap and trade, etc… Another dead-headed attack on Obama.
Coal power plants are linked to increased autism rates, rare types of blood cancer (leukemia), increased rates of cancer, respiratory disease, the list goes on and on…
We need to cut our addiction to coal, and start building wind power plants in the Midwest, our “wind corridor” and start building solar.
Just more climate change denials from you guys…

Lovely! You reap what you sow. You can now join me and wear burlap in the Winter.
“Change” remember? He never said it was any change you would benefit from.

the blacks are going to be the first ones who die when they can’t pay double or triple the power bills.

Time to go Solar…
You can build your own solar panels for under $200.

Well said, I don’t care how clean they can burn it, when they kill off whole mountains, clean water sources, and the permanent health of an ecosystem, strip mining should be outlawed. I live in Western Maryland myself, and have seen first hand ‘clean coal’ technology at work. Alex Jones is biased when it comes to energy, he’s from a well to do oil family, with Libertarian roots who take free market, deregulation to radical extremes. People shouldn’t be able to do what ever they want to, even if it is their own land because when we’re all dead and gone, the very land the future generations of this planet will try to inhabit will be poisoned, and permanently corrupted. I think all the elitist, silver spoon, Mafioso’s, and their families should have to lay, where they make their beds. Luxury Condos on top of Yucca Mountain.

He was talking about non clean coal technology. I live in the east and as I drive west I see so many Mountains with the tops ripped off and giant mud holes in the ground. It is proven that John McCain Plans to do the exact thing except he plans on capping over 68% of current plants. The other funny thing is, as OIL went up in price, my electric went up over ten cents per kwh, that is 200% of what I was already paying. Its about time somebody makes these greedy companies that take everything and give nothing.

Once again the simpletons distort the truth.
Here is what the experts say:
” On the campaign trail this fall, Senator Obama has said, “I am a big
proponent of clean-coal technology and I want us to move rapidly in
developing those sequestration technologies that are required. A huge
percentage of our electricity is generated by coal. What we need to do
though is to put clean coal technology on the fast track and that
means money. It means investment in research.”
Likewise, Senator McCain has recently said, “Perhaps no advancement in
energy technology could mean more to America than the clean burning of
coal and the capture and storage of carbon emissions. This single
achievement will open vast amounts of our oldest and most abundant
resource. And it will deliver not only electricity but jobs to some of
the areas hardest hit by our economic troubles.”
The acknowledgement by both presidential candidates of coal’s vital
role in America’s energy future is the cornerstone of sound
policymaking at the federal, state, and local levels, according to
Steve Miller, President of the American Coalition for Clean Coal
Electricity. Miller pointed out that: ACCCE supports rapid and
widespread research, development, deployment and commercialization of
innovative, advanced clean coal and other technologies-including
carbon capture, transportation, safe storage, and terrestrial carbon
sequestration-that are vital to the success of prudent climate change
policies.”

While coal companies are running ads of their own featuring the newly sworn-in president Barack Obama talking about clean coal on the campaign trail, Kentucky officials said they’re not concerned about this push endangering one of the state’s key industries.
