US President Barack Obama made a major gesture of conciliation to Iran on Thursday when he admitted US involvement in the 1953 coup which overthrew the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh.
“In the middle of the Cold War, the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government,” Obama said during his keynote speech to the Muslim world in Cairo.
It is the first time a serving US president has publicly admitted American involvement in the coup.

The CIA, with British backing, masterminded the coup after Mossadegh nationalised the oil industry, run until then in by the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
For many Iranians, the coup demonstrated duplicity by the United States, which presented itself as a defender of freedom but did not hesitate to use underhand methods to get rid of a democratically elected government to suit its own economic and strategic interests.

Yes. This was Washington’s “great rule of conduct” – that “in extending our commercial relations” with foreign nations, “to have with them as little political connection as possible.”
The point is to preserve the peace and prosperity we have here at home. With wars and free-fall economy in full swing I think our leaders are idiots.

Listen, it’s a ploy. Obama is merely giving the world the idea that he is trying to be a reconcilatory figure to the Muslims after George Bush pissed them off. It’s all part of the plan, while everyone is talking about Obama, the real power behind the United States get’s to carry on doing as it pleases behind the scenes. You have this larger than life figure to concentrate on now and he says all the right things and apparently knows all the right moves. It is deception at it’s finest. Do not be fooled by his false willingness to make friends with the Iranians. He merely wants to leave the image in the minds of many millions that it was he that first extended the hand of friendship so that when the US attack Iran with Israel they can say we tried so hard to get the Iranians on side but they wouldn’t have it.

I thought they had to have the shah to keep the soviets from gaining a foothold in Iran but the guy turned out to be a tyrant. It was when the red scare was in full bloom, Russian tanks were rolling and nuke shelters were everywhere. It was a cold war, but still a war nevertheless. Obama’s speech was very clever. Admitting for example the role of the US in overthrowing the elected Mossadeq Government and re-installing the Shah is part of his grand plan to deny US imperialism exists.
Now for the other 192 other invasions the US ruling class has carried out, and the 132 countries it currently has bases in. And Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan where Obama’s war on terror (who said violence is a dead end) has killed over one million innocent people. That’s roughly one September 11 every week for the last 6 years.
Similarly with Obama’s support for Israel,the two state non-solution and so on. Obama is a competent and charismatic George W Bush. Like Bush before him, he is the Commander in Chief of Terror and will do whatever necessary to defend this empire of capital.
