Keeping with an awkward tradition of sending pictures of himself commemorating historical events, President Obama noted the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in predicable fashion.

The White House tweeted this:

As tragic as the Newtown, Conn., slayings were, the president and most media fail to mention there were actually 27 victims – the shooter also killed his mother.

Obama used his weekly address to “honor the memories” of those lost that day, but he couldn’t resist the opportunity to speak about gun control.

“But beneath the sadness, we also felt a sense of resolve – that these tragedies must end, and that to end them, we must change,” the president said. “And on this anniversary of a day we will never forget, that’s the example we should continue to follow. Because we haven’t yet done enough to make our communities and our country safer.  We have to do more to keep dangerous people from getting their hands on a gun so easily.”

With a nod to the Clintonesque “it takes a village” mindset, he said, “We have to treat every child like they’re our child.”
