Obama Pushes Carbon Tax Proposal That Would Inflict New Great Depression
President elect sets out on agenda to revive frightening Lieberman/Warner legislation

President elect Barack Obama used his speech at a Los Angeles summit last night to reinvigorate a push for the revival of a frightening proposal to slash carbon emissions by 80 per cent, a move that would inflict a new Great Depression, cost millions of jobs, and sink America to near third world status.
“My presidency will mark a new chapter in America’s leadership on climate change,” Obama said in a video message to governors and others attending a Los Angeles summit on the issue.
“In the roughly four-minute message, Obama reiterated his support for a cap-and-trade system approach to cutting green house gases. He would establish annual targets to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and reduce them another 80 percent by 2050,” reports the Associated Press.
Obama’s mission is to revive and expand the defeated 2007 Lieberman/Warner bill, “America’s Climate Security Act,” which proposed a cap and trade system to reduce carbon emissions 70 per cent by 2050.

The bill was rejected for a very good reason - its passage would have created economic conditions comparable to a new Great Depression and sunk America to near third world status.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s economic analysis of the bill forecast that a whopping $2.9 trillion would be shaved off the economy by the year 2050 if the legislation was enacted. It would also reduce GDP by 6.9 percent - a figure comparable with the economic meltdown of 1929 and 1930, and millions of jobs would have been lost within the first 10 years of its passage.
As JunkScience.com’s Steven Milloy highlights, “For more perspective, consider that during 1929 and 1930, the first two years of the Great Depression, GDP declined by 8.6 percent and 6.4 percent, respectively.”
And what would we get for such a massive self-inflicted wound? It ought to be something that is climatically spectacular, right? You be the judge.
The EPA says that by the year 2095 — 45 years after GDP has been slashed by 6.9 percent — atmospheric carbon dioxide levels would be 25 parts per million lower than if no greenhouse gas regulation were implemented.
Keeping in mind that the current atmospheric CO2 level is 380 ppm and the projected 2095 CO2 level is about 500 ppm, according to the EPA, what are the potential global temperature implications for such a slight change in atmospheric CO2 concentration?
Not much, as average global temperature would only be reduced by a maximum of about 0.10 to 0.20 degrees Celsius, according to existing research.
Sacrificing many trillions of dollars of GDP for a trivial, 45-year-delayed and merely hypothetical reduction in average global temperature must be considered as exponentially more asinine than the dot-bombs of the late-1990s and the NINJA subprime loans that we now look upon scornfully.
Obama’s agenda to cut carbon emissions by 80 per cent is a huge leap towards the ultimate goal, expressed by the Carnegie Institute earlier this year and afforded sober credibility by the corporate media - a complete reduction down to zero carbon emissions.
Zero carbon emissions? That would lead to the near complete reversal of hundreds of years of technological progress and man’s return to the stone age.
Correction - stone age man was at least able to make use of fire - that too would presumably be banned under the measures being proposed.
Global transport of any kind would cease, manufacturing and production would be a thing of the past, the global economy would crumble, communications would go dark as computer networks and the Internet are abolished. Millions would freeze to death as a result of not being able to heat their homes.
We’d be back to living in caves and hunting for food with spears.
Presumably, since livestock flatulence accounts for more green house gas releases than cars, planes and all other forms of transport or industry put together, cows would also become an endangered species and global meat farming would cease to exist. This sounds like a joke but this is actually what these crazies are proposing.
The sheer ludicrousness of the Carnegie report is on a parallel with a March 2007 New York Times editorial, which subtly pushed the notion that humans emit carbon dioxide when they exhale, therefore should all be taxed for breathing!
And remember that all of this is being pushed in the name of a scientific theory that is being increasingly debunked on an almost daily basis.
The fact that there has been climate change since the birth of the planet has again been emphasized by a noticeable recent wave of global cooling related to a dearth of sunspot activity and exemplified by the Arctic ice sheet expanding by 30 per cent, an area the size of Germany, since the summer of 2007.
This clear reversal in natural climate change from the solar-system wide global warming that occurred throughout the 90’s is being buried by man-made global warming advocates by means of deceit and dirty tricks.
Global warming fearmongers like the World Wildlife Fund are having to resort to deception as a clear trend of global cooling unfolds. In a recent report, the WWF cited shrinking Arctic ice coverage to suggest climate change is “faster and more extreme” than first thought, while failing to acknowledge that Arctic sea ice expanded over an area bigger than the size of Germany during the year of 2008.
Last week, climate scientists allied with the IPCC were caught citing fake data to make the case that global warming is accelerating. NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, announced that last month was the hottest October on record. They later had to admit their “error” after it was revealed that they had used temperature records from September, a naturally hotter month, and merely passed them off as representing October temperatures.

1/ Nuclear power, wind etc are high tech and zero carbon emission. And heading towards it will in fact drive technology change forwards. Sticking with carbon based fuels is by definition no change, and no advancement.
2/ Fire from wood (for cavemen) has no impact on carbon balance - basic science of carbon cycle.
This article is about sticking where we are now - not a recipe for survival. Science, technology, and human invention will take us to new power sources with less pollution.
It is as depressing to read things like this, as it is for me to read the deep green nutters - both sadly out of touch with reality. Life and progress is about change. We can advance with out carbon. Nothing to fear from change, lots of opportunitues.

Then they realized that moronic people would submit to carbon taxes to combat global warming, so governments capitulated and started championing global warming, just as it started to become obvious that global warming was a farce.
By the way, to achieve zero carbon emissions we’ll all have to stop breathing. Maybe that’s on the agenda too.

What’s wrong with eliminating carbon emissions? We currently have technologies where a car can run off compressed air, fuel made from Algae. The compressed air car is already in production! Are we going to stick to out idiotic guns with using oil?
The elite will always be the elite, and they’ll always have more money than us. Every single government institution is over-bloated and inefficient. I grew up in California, and I was sick of the smog, it’s disgusting, it’s bad for the PEOPLE. You should be able to see the sky.

So what if carbon isn’t a problem? There are still HUGE other issues that go hand in hand with overconsumption and overpopulation, as described in the article on the destuction livestock production wages. Rainforest clearing is happening to allow for livestock grazing or mono/GMO crops to feed to livestock. The livestock then gets turned into super-healthy fast “food” for cultures that eat way too much protien to begin with.
If you want something left to turn your exhaled co2 into oxygen to breathe, you sure as shit should do some tree-hugging!

Tree huggers have made it so loggers can’t remove dead timber from forests, In CA you can’t even trim brush away on your own property without an anal probe.And judging from the fires over there this is great forest management. The carbon tax is only to fund the UN mandates and we see how they manage money.

The greenhouse gas from humans thing is a fraud, but us dumping massive pollutants into the environment from burning oil is not. Still no tax is required, take some of those Wall Street handouts and give them to US auto companies specifically to develop or buy efficient auto technology. It is already developed, using compressed air to store energy. Having exclusive access to this superior tech would save US auto companies while we are helping the environment.

I’m totally with you on that one. To be honest, we need to be planting feral hemp wherever we can. Wherever it will grow, it needs to be planted. We still need food. We still need to grow other crops, obviously. But, look at all of the uses of that renewable miracle called hemp. Hemp is an excellent rotation crop. One acre of hemp can produce as much usable fiber as 4 acres of trees or two acres of cotton. Hemp is among the earth’s primary renewable resources: trees cut down to make paper take 50 to 500 years to grow back while hemp can be cultivated in as little as 100 days, and can yield 4 times more paper over a 20 year period. Hemp helps detoxify and regenerate the soil. Hemp has a very high rate of conversion of CO2 to O2. I’m with you, dude. We can hear that carbon, or CO2, isn’t bad and that it is necessary for life, but we also need to hear how valuable O2 is in the process, as well. That’s what we need and those forests and future hemp fields are what create the O2, from the CO2 that we create. Symbiosis.

We as a nation are collapsing and there is no denying it and if you are one that denies it or says it is conspiracy then you are not very learned. Anyone can watch and see what is happening. The bailout, the carbon tax, the active brigades. These are undeniable. I come from a small town in Virginia, there are many millitery reserve members in my area. Great people by the way. When I talk to them, they tell me that they are doing domestic riot training and biological training on their weekend retreats to the base. So, you tell me why? I spoke with one just the other day and they agreed with things I was sharing. Like how if a riot breaks and their life is in danger, then what are you going to do. It is them or you in a bad situation. These people though will be frustrated middle class Americans trying to get food and get their rights back. That’s whay these things happening are sad and real. We need to wake up and see it. The problem is that we have become too comfortable and cowardly to even care. So I guess it’s back to the big game, let me get my popcorn and beer.

God, my fingers hate my brain, today. I’ve done a lot of typing with cold fingers. We’d have to establish a method of ensuring that feral hemp and marijuana don’t cross pollinate. Maybe marijuana should be grown in filtered greenhouses? It has medical, spiritual, and recreational uses. People are still going to grow it. I’d smoke it a big, fat, fluffy bud, right now, if I could. This isn’t about that, though. Not for the purpose of this topic. It is about feral hemp. I don’t really want to build a hempcrete house with what I believe to be some industrial grade hempcrete, but it isn’t actually as strong as the rating because someone was growing a plant outside of a filtered greenhouse and it cross pollinated with a farmer’s field, somewhere and he sold the plants to another farmer and that farmer believed it to be the same industrial grade hemp that the original farmer had grown and, unwittingly, represented the seed as being. I don’t want to be throwing a party on my hempcrete deck and have it collapse all because they wouldn’t pass a law permitting and mandating that people grow their marijuana in a filtered greenhouse. I don’t think that the party would appreciate that, either. That’s reagrdless as to whether or not we are smoking the hemp’s close cousin, or not. I do know that my fingers are hating my brain and they need a break. Later.

I think this will benefit the world. Global warming is a fact, at least as I can understand. There is to much consensus for this to be a fraud. And I can myself see that the average temperature is getting higher. But I’m open for other facts. However, pushing a green agenda is a way of investing in a booming market. So in the long run it’s all positive.
Even if the alarm of global warming is not justified we need to make a switch away from oil sooner or later. Why fight against it? I can only suspect that some voices here is indeed part of a conspiracy, from the oil industry.
I hope that you can put this aside, together with ideas of a negative NWO (that we need, a positive one), and focus on 9/11 and the need for a new investigation. I’m trying to get some attention for this over here in Sweden, but this is not helping the cause.

The other day I watched the CNN “Jim Jones Documentary” the church members just loved this man and thought of him as their SAVIOR. I was amazed!

How is taxing us more going to help anyone? Our standard of living has been declining ever since they made it okay to outsource manufacturing (and jobs) in 1974. I think this is what has devastated entire inner cities here in the East. This is what “free trade” is about. It’s actually the cause of our enormous trade deficit.
These were good paying jobs but now they are in Communist China. Their standard of living has risen a little but ours has fallen. Most of us can barely afford a house now.
I am afraid of what is going to happen to my children. I have tried to wake people up but they just keep voting for Democrats and Republicans and expecting things to change, when in fact these are the very people who are causing these problems.

Can someone explain to me how switching to alternative renewable energy sources can be a bad thing? Solar and wind energy are accessible to everyone on the planet, and would be counter-productive to any large corporate controlled energy resource, wouldn’t it? We would be making the switch from centralized corporate controlled energy to decentralized locally controlled energy, giving the power back to the general public.
Another Great Depression? The spin the author has put on the truth of this issue is ridiculous. The fact is the number of jobs created far exceed the number of jobs that would be lost in this transition, and would lead to a boost in the economy by developing a market that is nonexistant right now. How the author spins that into another Great Depression is a major fallacy, and does the frequenters of this site a serious disservice with that kind of misinformation.

i’m in the same boat.. i wonder how being more ecological in our society can be bad. lets just say millions of jobs are lost, and we do head into a depression. the depression, at this point, is already inevitable. but, are people not resilient? will we all die overnight? you all act like its going to be the end of the world.
the human race has dug itself into a deep hole, and im sure its 100% true that we are overpopulated. but this country has cash crops, which the actual 3rd world countries don’t have. most of those countries are deserts, or have dead land, they cant grow food. if they could, they wouldn’t be starving. we can still grow our own source of food, and we export tons of it.
if we go into a depression, more of those crops would stay here to feed ourselves. a farmer can survive any type of depression. but if we keep shitting on the planet, and killing more of the fields and poisoning our own air and water supply, then it wont matter what taxes they put on it, or what kind of world government is in place, cause we’ll all be dead anyway with nowhere to grow food.
if this new world order actually does happen, are you not going to fight back? i see nothing but a bunch of people sitting behind computer screens spouting their mouths off about how this has to be stopped, but no ones doing anything but that. even alex. is showing up at the white house, shouting with a bullhorn and getting arrested really going to change anything?

When there is more co2 in the atmosphere, plants use it. The planet get greener, and I mean from space. The planet looks greener. The plants grow better and faster. CO2 is not a problem and it never has been. It always is balanced out by natural mechanisms.

I’m a 64 year old male, will be 65 in October. I retired at age 61; not that I wanted to; but simply because there were no jobs. Now I’m living on Social Security with a raise in January;
eating on food stamps, driving an 18 year old car. I’m getting along without a computer-could use a late model PC or Apple with software and printer. Good thing I don’t have

There is a simple solution to the problem of carbon dioxide. Plant trees. They take in the carbon and send out pure, clean oxygen. And while we are at it,,,plant hemp. An acre of hemp cleans more carbon than an acre of trees. Not only would it clean our air without taxes…but…it would open the factories. And by the way, it makes a replenishable fuel not to mention the many many other things we can make with it.
To have jobs and factories opening we must make SOMETHING.
